The 1772 Disc interface IC - Availability

Post by daveejhitchins » Thu Nov 15, 2018 6:55 pm

The WD1772/VLSI1772 is getting hard to find . . . Buy!

Mark Haysman mentioned, during his visit to the Leicester ABUG, he'd found a source in the US of the VLSI 1772-02. He also passed on the details to me. Small quantities e.g. less than several hundred were just too expensive. They had a total of 687 at a price of $2.54 each - I thought this was a really good price (my last lot, from China, were over twice that price!). OK, there would be a large investment, however, I thought it worth it as it would secure the continuation of supply for BBC 1772 upgrades, spares, sales on eBay and new disc interfaces for several retro computers, including the Electron :D

Hmmmm!
First obstacle: They wanted several US government forms filled in and FAXed back. I managed to persuade them scanned copies sent back by eMail would be OK!

Second obstacle: They thought that because they were ISO registered they couldn't sell to me, as I worked from home! I managed to get the Sales Manager to go and read the ISO specifications - He came back, apologised and confirmed the sale could continue - was this a clue?

Third obstacle: They would only take payment by bank transfer at a cost of $40. I wanted to Pay by Credit Card and pay their fee (about the same price) - suggesting that it was the safest way for me. They weren't interested!!

Fourth obstacle: And this was the deal breaker, for me! They wanted to charge $338.00 for shipping - WTF!

All-in-all, with their 21% hike plus the 20% import duty, plus handling, at this end it put the price up to nearly £4 each. Just too much investment!

Disappointed, to say the least . . .

So, anyone living in/near Seaford, New York that fancies collecting some parts for me

Dave,
I had the same postage problems with the NOS Teac floppy drives.
I ended up getting them posted to a hotel (free P&P whilst in the
country) while I was visiting and brought them back as luggage.
At UK customs they told me the total was below the import
allowance and I didn't pay anything extra.

How many were you thinking? If we can keep the price below the
£390 allowance something might be possible, although these would
need to be passed on at cost so not to qualify as a business deal.

American companies and postage has gone all to pot. I used to buy a lot of stuff from the US via ebay, and don't even bother now. Huge sums for postage.

I was hoping to grab the lot, as any reduction in quantity resulted in a price hike. We need someone who travels to New York regularly - so they could bring them back in small amounts . . . It's nice to have a dream, now and then [-o< 8) Anyone looking at my 'books' would definitely not see any recognised business dealing

If I was still working I could have arranged something, as we had several people traveling to and fro. We could really use these parts . . .

Would they let you send your own courier to pick up their parcel I wonder?

I think the problem in the US is that, in general, postage cost have gone up out of all proportion to everything else! But, it may be worth asking the question of carriers over here.

Well . . . I received a 'phone call from the US company that had the VL1772-02s. Change of attitude :D

I now have a good supply of VL1772s, if anyone is in need. They are available at £3.50 to Forum members. The WD1772-02-02s are still available for people wanting the higher speed version e.g. for High Density Disc Interfaces.

How much are the PH-02-02's Dave? I think I'll probs take a couple to future-proof my HD Elks and Beebs.... :)

BTW - Standard genuine 1772 chips will all work with my HD mod (not the 1770 =; ) but if I ever go back to looking at ADFS, I think the 02-02 might just have the required edge.)

Ooo, I'll take a few of those if that's OK. Always nice to carry spare controller ic's for the 1770 beebs and Arc's :-)

I reckon 3 or 4 should be enough to last me a long old while :-)
