Elite Master Compact version

Post by DutchAcorn » Sun Feb 15, 2015 8:37 pm

There was a Master Compact version of Elite on eBay sold today. This is the only (?) ADFS version of 8 bit Elite and I am curious how it is set-up. Simple "E" directory? Does it support the Master Compact digital joystick?

I have not found an image of this version, anyone have a copy? [-o<

Thanks!

Wonder why the seller listed it as Acorn 32 bit ?? getting their Archimedes and Compacts confused !!

I may well be able to get you a copy of Elite (master compact) if you are interested - it won't have a box but the manual/disc/key strip (photocopy) they are genuine and come from Superior.

Let me know if you are interested and i'll see what i can do

Hi Matthew, any chance you can image the disc? I am not so much interested in owning a copy, but I am interested in the differences with the Master 128 version.

The origins of this disk are lost in the mists of time... but i *think* i got all of the files from the Master Compact 3.5" disk - in 2009 it would seem! :)
Appears to work in B-em V2.2 in BBC Master Compact mode and on BeebEm 4.14 in BBC Master 128 mode.
Seems the disk image is smaller than Colin's version though... maybe it's missing something and will crash later on?
... but deleting ELPIC, O.BDATA and O.ELITE from the aforementioned image still allows the game to load...
... also comparing M128Elt FF0E00 FF0E43 0002D1 and !BOOT FF0E00 FF0E43 0002E4 shows that the "loader" is marginally longer on the BBC MC disk.
... further comparisons -

O.ELITE appears to be a (protected?) loader which doesn't load anything
ELPIC requires a filename after it - some kind of viewer? (sets up a split screen mode)

Code: Select all

(adf) BDATA 00001300 00001300 00004200
(ssd) BDATA 00000000 00000000 00004200 ] same?
(ssd) O.BDATA 00001300 00001300 00004200 ]

(adf) ELITE 00001300 00002C6C 00006D00
(ssd) BCODE 00000000 00000000 00006C48
Having read Colin's thread referred to earlier, as the O files are the originals... i must've saved off the resultant code from ELITE on this disk image :)

Hi, Matthew - not sure about the OP, but I would be interested, please.

If not possible no worries.

Thanks.

I don't personally own the a copy of this version of Elite, and not sure how you make images either.

It took a little while, but I finally managed to write this image to a floppy using Omniflop. ADFS images somehow give me trouble so I imaged the floppy back to see if that still worked in BeebEm - it does.

The floppy does not work in my M128 or my Master Compact, I get this:
elite crash.jpg
The floppy verifies ok and I have RAM slot 6 free.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Paul

Have not tried that one yet. The thing I'd like to find out is if the MC version has support for a digital joystick. "Your" version has the M128Elt file on it. Are you positive this is the Master Compact version?

Thanks!

I've copied the files from the ADF over to an SSD. Loads up OK in BeebEM (BBC Master 128 mode). Ship on the "Load new commander" screen is broken on B-Em 2.2 (BBC Master 128 mode) but not BBC Master 128 w/MOS3.5 - not sure why!

Don't know about that, as I hate joysticks even more than ADFS   so never tried them, even though I do have two sets burried somewhere in my big loft.

=D> can I ask how you got the !BOOT EL (01) file off onto DFS? using a ram saver /debugger? or a disc manager? :? Every time with the original ADFS 31/2" discs I have, they only allow me to *RUN them, or they say "Access violation"

Succes! I formatted the floppy as ADFS L where it should be ADFS M

Now it works fine in my Master Compact. The version is different from the Master 128 version: the digital joystick is supported! It works the same as the keys: keeping the joystick to the left increases the roll, letting go slowly brings it back to centre.

Originally, when working with the file on an actual BBC Master, i had a program similar to

Code: Select all

10 FOR I%=&8000 TO &FFFF
20 IF (?I% AND &7F)=&21 AND (?(I%+1) AND &7F)=&42 PRINT I%
30 NEXT
This finds the first two characters of [!B]OOT in the virtual catalogue, at &C405. I'm certain i read it somewhere, but it's easy enough to test which high bits are set to give the file it's attributes -

Code: Select all

1ST [R]EADABLE
2ND [W]RITEABLE
3RD [L]OCKED
4TH [D]IRECTORY
5TH [E]XECUTABLE
So with a simple

Code: Select all

?&C405=&A1
?&C406=&C2
?&C407=&4F
?&C409=&54
!BOOT becomes WR instead of EL :)
Nowadays, knowing the general location of the virtual catalogue and BeebEM's debugger saves all that work :P

Glad you got it working! =D>

Also tried your version, but it does not support the digital joystick. This seems to be the M128 version, not the Master Compact version.

Attached is the image I used for Omniflop (320K ADFS M).
