Simultaneous 2 player games

Post by sydney » Mon Oct 27, 2014 4:28 pm

I've been thinking about what games to play in Halifax and it occurred to me that it would be interesting to set up a knockout tournament style competition with a simultaneous two player game or two. Any suggestions for games? I'm sure that Skirmish has a 2 player mode and so did Icarus. I've never played Dunjunz but I presume that has 2 or more players. Just thought of Barbarian and probably Way Of The Exploding Fist too.

I've gone through this thread and the thread from 2010 to produce a list. I'm also adding links to the ssd files hosted on Stairway to Hell.

Simultaneous 2 player games list:
  • Skirmish
  • Icarus
  • Dunjunz (4 players!?)
  • Barbarian
  • Way Of The Exploding Fist
  • Blockbusters
  • Zenon
  • Dogfight (Opus)
  • Dogfight (Program power)
  • Harvey Headbanger
  • Stock Car (Micro Power)
  • Joust (Atari)
  • Karate Combat
  • Spy vs Spy
  • By Fair Means or Foul
  • Bandits at 3 o'Clock
  • Grand Prix Construction Kit
  • Uggie's Garden
  • Ballistix
  • THUNDERBALL (Mastertronic)
  • Star Battle
  • Swag (Micropower)
  • Tactic
  • BALLS!
  • Pipemania
  • Cowboy Shootout
  • Match Day
  • Arcade Soccer
  • Superior Soccer
Two (or more!) beebs needed.
  • Double Phantom (Doctor Soft)

Apart from Blockbusters, which might not be action-packed enough for a broad audience, the only game I can think of that you haven't mentioned is Zenon.

Dogfight from Opus is a good two-player.

Harvey Headbanger is fun.
Stock Car (Micro Power)
Joust (Atari)

As a more challenging setup you could try to run Double Phantom (Doctor Soft).

EDIT: just noticed the reference to Stephen's 2010 thread, I think that covers it nicely, now we only need to add all the 2-player BBC games that were published since 2010 8)

I've gone through both threads and compiled a list of simultaneous 2 player games and added it to the first post.

How about Match Day (and possibly other football games too? Arcade Soccer? Superior Soccer?)

Football games added to the list. Were any of them any good? I seem to remember Match Day was very slow (on the elk). I've been spoiled by C64 and Amiga football games so I have high expectations. C64 Microprose Soccer and Sensible Soccer are two of my favourite games of all time

EDIT: Just had a look on youtube and I've never played match day, but did play match day 2 on the c64 and it was slow. Don't think I've played any football games on the beeb so might have a go later.

I didn't think "BALLS!" was a sequel to Sphere of Destiny? (As Sphere has its own sequel called, would you believe it ... Sphere of Destiny 2, heh! ;) ).

Had a quick go on both of these. They are different games, Balls! appears to be two player only and Sphere of Destiny 2 is alternate not simultaneous.
