Let's Play Citadel!

Post by Test Pilot Monkey » Tue Jan 18, 2011 6:24 am

This is something I'm doing for another forum, but I'm sure there are people here who will appreciate it.

Remember Citadel? Did you ever manage to get through it? If not, see what you were missing! If so, relive the excitement!

This is part one of our adventure:

Lovely!!
Have played this game for a long time.
Even my dad liked to play it.  (and he hated every other game I played on my Elk)

My older brother solved Citadel in under a week, leaving me nothing to do but find the crown in the Witches House.

IMHO Palace of Magic was absolute rubbish compared to Citadel. Pokey screens, poor character movement, no atmosphere, terrible graphics and the solution was far too linear.

Are you doing the same as your Repton vids, i.e. recording your commentary later while your watching the video.

Yes, in this case much later. That's why I've forgotten things

I've played the 2nd one, but I never got my mitts on the original. Citadel 2 appeared on one of the later Play It Again Sam albums, either 17 or 18. Pretty sure it was 18, released 1993, and was the last commercial game released for the Beeb.

I wrote the comment on the first Youtube link under my name of Monstoday:

Sweet playthrough :-) I only ever had Citadel 2, but it was a similar style to this and it still had the colour-coded keys. You had some interesting baddies like the monks and the squares in the Arena room. They were somewhat toned down in the sequel. Plus, you only had the 1 character.

Enjoyed the first episode of this, but not watched the rest yet.

Not unassisted, no. Micro User infinite energy and Impact Posters solution to the rescue! :P
I'm pretty sure I could (and perhaps did) complete it without the cheat, but it was the crowns that were the real f***er in the game - and what I needed the solution for. Having to hump every single wall in the damn game shouldn't have to be anybody's idea of a good time :x

Watched some of the videos but not all yet. Do any of them have the hidden entry into the title screen? (IIRC you drop the trampoline in the east most screen then jump up, up and away!)

That's not included because I had no idea you could do that!

If I had known, it certainly would have been.

As you know I've watched all of these, excellent work.

The last time I met The Kraken we both mentioned we liked your rambling and your sarcasm in your commentary. The funniest bits were when you were sarcastic of yourself for not remembering where you were going!

"Rambling" and "Sarcastic" are definitely words people who know me would use to describe me

I watched all these videos too - excellent job, TPM. I never really got swept up by Citadel, as I got frustrated too early on and gave up (ahh, the impatience of youth!) but I have always wanted to see someone play it through, after reading various hints and listings for it in The Micro User.

Very cool to see it completed - and I think it does a very good job at an ending, too, rather than the usual single screen message.

I found when I did the Barbarian video a while back that it was handy to refresh my memory on the game by reading a few magazine reviews and stuff, so I didn't have quite as much time to fill. Still, I didn't have to cover a video that was this long ... :)

Great stuff, it'll be interesting to see your next video project, if you do one ...

Sam.

There's a few BBC Micro games I'd like to do videos for, but there's also other games on other systems I'd like to do as well. If you're not a hardcore Beeb fan who won't touch any other computers, you might like them.

I've already done my huge Repton video project, because Repton was a huge part of my BBC Micro memories. There's other games like Citadel I remember though, and I'll be looking at them too. Maybe I'll remember more games and maybe I'll come across others here which look interesting.

This may sound stupid, but, how do you jump higher on the trampolines? I cannot for the life of me do it.

To jump higher keep both the Up and Jump keys pressed at the same time

I'm going to watch these whilst working from home tomorrow.

I actually wrote to Superior When I was a kid for the solution as I couldn't find the last crystal, I'm sure it was the one in a fort I was missing, think you have to press up or fire in front of the letter C and it let's you in.

Bloody thing
