Newbie with some tape loading queries

Post by Balmoral James » Sat Aug 25, 2018 11:29 am

As a newbie to the BBC B I have been getting into the system since I bought it 2months ago, having owned other 8bit systems including the Electron for years I thought it was time to sample the BBC having heard many great things about it. Some of the issues I've had I have described on another thread but as for tape loading I have been playing a few of my compatible Electron games and have followed the *tape then chain"" command and that has generally been fine for me.

However I have run into problems loading a few dedicated BBC games such as Matchday and Knightlore. When I try and load them I get the message Locked. What does that mean? Does that mean the tape is damaged or have I entered the wrong loading commands. Both games are boxed but have no instruction manuals so I have been winging it so far! Any tips on this will be happily received (since I have joined the forum I have been bothering you all with my Beeb ineptitude and you have been fantastic so far) once again I throw myself at your mercy!!

'Locked' is the Beeb's response to a copy-protected tape (albeit a fairly minimal protection system) but you'll usually only see it with an original tape if you are using the wrong initial loading command. If yours is a disc machine, you should also enter PAGE=&E00 <Enter> after the *TAPE command and before the first loading command. If you then still see the locked message with CHAIN"", try *RUN <Enter>.

For Knightlore, instead of CHAIN "" try *RUN

I could not easily find the instructions / inlay for the 'B version unfortunately. I did find a nice review though of said version. :D

However the 'Gold Collection' "tape" variant does appear to require a *RUN to load it rather than the more usual CHAIN "" , so I concur with hoglet on that point.

PS, Welcome! :)

And somehow I half missed that too! Sorry Dave!

It does mention it as well in said inlay paperworks you found:
Gold Collection Inlay wrote:Check that your machine is in the correct loading mode by typing *TAPE then press RETURN and. If you have a filing system other than TAPE installed, type PAGE = & EOO then press RETURN (if you are uncertain as to whether this applies then do it anyway.)

To load the required program type CHAIN "" then RETURN; (*RUN or */ to load JETPAC, KNIGHT LORE or SABRE WULF) followed by PLAY on the cassette recorder. The required game will load automatically.
