Games that were better on the Electron than on the Beeb?

Post by leenew » Fri Aug 11, 2017 5:38 pm

Hi,
Were there any games where the version published for the Electron was better than the beeb version?
Or any Electron games that were different enough from the beeb version to be worth mentioning?
I was thinking of including them on bbcmicro.co.uk

p.s. I have heard rumours that FRAK! is better on the Elk... :-k

Definitely Frak! Better collision detection, more levels, a screen designer, customisable start level and colourschemes. It may only be monochrome (and monophonic) but it is a far, far better game than the BBC Micro version. I'd love a BBC Master version of Frak! that's the Electron version with BBC Micro 4-colour graphics and 4-channel sound.

Gauntlet -Micro Power, never released for beeb, but a few changes BITD and it works perfect. Much better than Defender / galaxian etc

Moonraider is very different on BBC and Electron. Arguable which one is better, though.

Another vote for the Electron version of Frak! being better than the BBC.

Or just for a regular Model B if this was all squeezed onto an Electron. That could be an interesting (future) project. I just tried the frak-electron disk image in b-em and it works fine on a Model B but bombs out on a Master. Would require disassembling sometime... :-k

If i'm honest I prefered the electron version of Repton 1 than the beeb. Even with the smaller viewport the smaller sprites gave a wider FOV and were cuter imo.

Good point about the FOV on Electron Repton, but I don't think that's enough to save it :)

Electron Exile might be a contender. The 32K BBC version has a 128x128 display, but the Electron is more like 128x192 (I think), which is a useful step up. Sure, it's only 4 colours, but it does a good job of not feeling too much like it.

I wonder what extra stuff could have been included if that's how the BBC version had been done too!

I think the most important difference in Electron Repton is the map character, which allows you to see the map only after it has been collected.

I like this feature (XOR certainly built on it in an interesting way) and it would have been good if it had been in Repton3.

I'm thinking of making a video or two comparing the beeb and electron. I can think of plenty of games where the beeb is better but I'm struggling with ones that are the other way round.
Also games that are near enough identical would be interesting too.

Is anyone up to the challenge of getting Elk Repton working on the beeb?
It seems to play OK but the screen is in the wrong position.
There are 3 versions at Stairway to Hell: https://www.stairwaytohell.com/filesear ... rch=Search
2 seem to work and one does not load.
The ones that work are the BRRR (Blue Ribbon re-release) and the SCRR (Superior collection re-release)

gosh, this brings back memories, yes, as a very little boy I always wanted repton, my dad found an electron version in a bargain bin, but we had a beeb, and yes the screen went offset. Seem to recall I played it anyway

I did have a tape 2 disc version that didn't actually work, but did get to the loader without screen problem, it let me load the rest of the game from tape from that point and play it properly.

I was too young to work out why it did the screen prob, but I might have a look now....
