The Cascade 50 cassette

Post by leenew » Mon Dec 19, 2016 5:46 pm

Whilst adding some games to bbcmicro.co.uk I have just had the displeasure to come across what is surely a contender for the worst compilation of all time, the "Cascade 50" cassette.

50 Games on one cassette - amazing.

"Congratulations! You are now the owner of the sensational Cassette 50, brought to you by Cascade.

Cassette 50 contains 50 exciting games to load and run, fully utilising the features of your computer. It is impossible to tell you everything about the 50 games on Cassette 50, but they include all types such as maze, arcade, missile, tactical and logic games, to suit most tastes in computer game playing.

Cassette 50 will appeal to people of all ages and the games will provide many hours of entertainment for all the family at a fraction of the cost of other computer games. "

According to Everygamegoing http://everygamegoing.com/landing/items ... te_50.html
Dave has listed the 50 games supplied.
Except... those aren't what you get!
Disc999-Cascade50.zip
(34.06 KiB) Downloaded 65 times
Instead of "Galactic Attack" you get "Galactic Dogfight" twice, at game 2 and game 9
Instead of "Spaceship" you get "Space Search" twice, at game 29 and game 42
Instead of "Jetmobile" you get "Jet Flight" twice, at game 30 and 47

If you look at the load addresses of the games, it is &1900, using the first 3 letters of the game name and a number 1.
So it looks as if the genius has transferred them to disc at some point, and overwritten Gal1 with Gal1, Spa1 with Spa1 and Jet1 with Jet1.
So, not only was "U.T.S", the author of these travesties of software, he couldn't use a disc drive properly either!!

U.T.S....... Utterly Terrible Software maybe??

Lee.

p.s. I don't know if I have the heart to make a proper menu for this disc

On the attached SSD you'll find Galactic Attack (b.GAL & b.GAL1), SpaceShip (C.SPA), Jet Flight (D.JET) and Jetmobile (U.JET)
Jetmobile used to run in MODE6 (line 200), i've changed it to MODE7 to enjoy the graphical wonder of double height text!

OK, so this is super exciting :D
I have put the 3 missing games onto the Cascade disc, AND made a menu which actually lists the games you can actually play, so you don't have to actually guess =D>

WOW! I bet U.T.S. would be proud....
In fact, I have since discovered U.T.S. is "Guy Ulrich Wilhelmy", who ran "Ulrich Technical Services". So he can now be listed as the Author of the vast majority of those 50 marvellous games.

HOLD THE FRONT PAGE!
CANCEL CHRISTMAS!
Something is rotten in the state of Cascadia...
Game 40 is "Die thrower", a magnificent simulation of someone throwing a die as many times as you want (not dice - U.T.S. didn't fall for that one...).
But!! everygamegoing and other sources list game 40 as "Do Your Sums".
Come on people - what is happening here????

I have an original version of this amazing tape, which I'm sure must now be worth well over £100!

Game 40 on the tape insert is definitely named "Do your sums"

Well Dave, this mystery deepens...
What is going on here I wonder???
Will this become the Cascade cassette 51!
I know this is a long shot, but do you have the skills to LOAD the game in and maybe SAVE it to a disc, and then UPLOAD it here for us to inspect?
I can get a well informed colleague to talk you through the process if you like?
This will be talked about for years to come, I am sure.

Back.

Took me a while to work out which way round the tape lead was, and to get the right level.

Here's an .ssd containing Game 40: Do Your Sums:

This has to be the worst game ever!

Hmmm..... I can think of 50 other close contenders.....

Thanks for this Dave, but I am now in a dilemma as to which game to include at no. 40!
Maybe we need 2 versions of the disc, one with each contender for the no. 40 spot? :-k

Thanks for the Christmas present Dave

Maybe one did not meet their high quality standards, so they made a new version with a different game at said slot...

I would include "Do Your Sums", as it seems that was the one on the original tape. It possibly got swapped during translation.

I really need to stop spending time on this... It's Christmas eve! :D

Here is the definitive ( ) version of the Cascade 50 cassette err... disc.
Disc999-Cascade50.zip
(43.86 KiB) Downloaded 52 times
One thing that is slightly intriguing is that the files I originally had, were from the STH archive (from a UEF presumably from an original tape?)
All the games were by "U.T.S.", and loaded in mode 6, and all had very similar "presentation".

The missing ones that BillC sent me, and the incorrect one that Hoglet sent me were not by U.T.S. but were from different and unknown authors, and have their own "style".... :-k
It's just not THAT intriguing to think about any more

Merry Christmas

Seriously, this thread is running very close to the wind. It's frankly offensive. [-X

As it's Christmas, however, I'll let it slide. The fact that Lee's had to play any of the games is punishment enough...

Just this morning I watched a YouTube presentation about a Nintendo cartridge called Action 52. There were three amateur programmers who were given a short (three weeks?) course on making Nintendo games, and for some mad reason the boss insisted that all fifty-two games had to be completed in three months. Isn't that two games a week? Tons of music and art and even sub-engines were nicked from other stuff. I noticed one of the games had the Deluxe Paint II trademark pharaoh mask graphic in the background for every level. Many of the games weren't playable, and they were all awful, obviously.

The really funny thing is it sold for $200 which was the price of the then-new Super Nintendo and the ambitious boss commissioned an over-the-top but cheap TV advert heavily inspired by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He had plans to release his own dedicated hand-held console and announced a "Disney-quality" animation series based on the flagship game, Cheetah-Men, which was the Turtles rip-off.

Anyone who tried to track him down got ominous messages and nobody's ever been able to find him, but two of the programmers spoke-up recently.

Oh and I've just looked at this Cascade 50 thing and it's even worse than Action 52.

Almost tempted to make my own awful, pathetically time-constrained retro-style games bundle, and call it Crudbox 52, just to see what happens.

They should have named this cassette the Cascade 80!!
I bet every cassette was different
Col, what I need you to do, is to load every game on this cassette and make a note of all of the game titles, and whether it is by "Cascade" "U.T.S" or an independant author.
Then play every game for at least 5 minutes and make a note of what "genre" the game is.
Then you can have your supper :D

If you don't check in soon - I will know you have gone insane - just like me
