Mode Infinity Demo By CRTC

Post by Dave_E » Fri Aug 21, 2015 6:19 am

Does anyone have a copy of this fairly new demo? I tried downloading it from pouet but it seems to be in some archive format that I'm not familiar with? Just want it as an ssd really.

It's a zipped SSD iirc?

I think I had to install 7zip to decompress it. Here is a plain zip file with the ssd in.

That's perfect. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work with BeebEm (M128 mode) and on Model B emulator it hangs before it even starts.

Does this only work on the original hardware or has anyone been able to get it to work with an emulator?

Just checked in beebem on the mac, it sort of works, but really badly... The scrolling text ends up all mucked up and it's pretty slow.

Obviously works fine on real hardware (these things are so reliant on the "details/quirks" of the original hardware that I'm always amazed if they run at all on emulators).

Ok, that's really interesting. I'll have to have a think about that (i.e. games that only work on the original hardware). I'm designing a site at the moment and that is an important flag... :-)

It also means I can't easily add screenshots for that demo... :-(

B-Em and jsbeeb should run anything the same as real hardware (the intent is that they are 100% cycle accurate). Anything that doesn't run correctly implies an emulator bug which needs reporting and fixing asap!

The video I saw of Mode Infinity captured from real hardware suggested that the scrolling artefacts happen there too (left hand edge corrupted, unclean transition between the main window and the scrolltext).

Scrolltext was split in half on beebem, certainly didn't look like the youtube video of it running... I'll try jsbeeb :)

Edit: works fine in jsbeeb!

Doesn't work at all on Beebdroid, sadly. Can it run on a Model B or is it Master only?

FYI the source code is available on GitHub here: https://github.com/crtc-demos/mode-infinity if anyone is interested in how it was done.
