Help identifying mystery tape: "Exile places"

Post by scarybeasts » Fri Mar 09, 2018 1:36 am

Hi,

I've been buying some original Exile boxed copies. One of them, an Acorn Electron cassette version, actually has two tapes. The second tape is called "Exile places". It looks _kind_ of Superior / Acornsoft official but I have never heard of anything like it.

A picture is attached.

Only thing I can think of is that it could be something similar to the "Exile Discovery Disk" that Audiogenic made for the Amiga: http://www.audiogenic.com/otheram.htm

Or maybe it's just some enthusiastic owner's creation. Any ideas?

Cheers
Chris

Could it be a tape used for exile game saves that someone printed a label and glued on?

Hi,

I agree it could be someone's nice label for a personal saved game tape.
A bit formal to print (c) 1998 Superior Software Acornsoft though?

Cheers

When I owned an Amiga I used to print nice labels for my 'backups'.

Any idea what size tape it is? Is it a C90 or something smaller?

best way to find out it to make a wav of it or cat it on a bbc to see what is on the tape
We can all sit here and guess what it's about but one way to be sure

Hmm!

After a bit of hackery (hacked up my own wav -> BBC file parser), the tape seems to have two files:

START, length 1657 bytes.
COCKUP, length 4426 bytes.

These files appear to be saved over a copy of the game "Hyperdrive", with a couple of blocks of "REPTON" for good measure too.

These are bigger than Exile saved games (1024 bytes), so mystery not solved :-)

Reading old tapes and looking at how the waveforms have decayed (or not), 30 years later, is kind of fun.

Cheers
