The Electron User review of the MRB confirms that BASIC can't make use of the extra memory. So that tallies with what we are seeing. What actual failure do you see?

I can test this myself as I have an MRB in one of my Electrons, but it would take a while to get it fired up.

One possibility - I note that the original routine used character codes 128 and 129, but the other one uses 254 and 255. I did some tests this morning with the original code (DIM ptn% 8) in BeebEM configured as a B+ with shadow RAM turned on and it worked perfectly. The same code works on the Electron with second processor and BeebEM B with second processor. I've moved the DIM statement to the ...
