Private Messages, delay in sending?

Hi,

Just a small query on Private Messages.

When I send a PM, it seems to get sent right away, but sits in the Outbox for quite a while. Is this normal? Why does it do that?

Wanted, 5.25" DS/DD disks

Hi, Having just bought a 5.25" disk unit from Mark, I now need some disks to put in it. Never expecting to have use for them again, I trashed all my DS/DD disks years ago (I know!). I still have a few DS/HD, but believe that they might actually underperform on the Beeb, and anyway, I'd need a few mo...

Re: 23 Beebs available...

Tis done Dave! What's your approximate area for the purposes of the list? Stuart :) Hi Stuart, "approximate area" is Aberdeen, - I can PM you the full address if you need more detail. More than happy to pay postage to Aberdeen, one thing that really annoys me - there are a few more of course :-) , ...

Having just got the Beeb bug, can I add my name to the list of potential takers?

I would have a go at fing one too,

Re: 5.25" Disk Drives for BBC Model B

Thanks Mark,

OK, diskcopy would be a bit of a pain, but I can handle that if it gives me the flexibility to read/write both formats. On that basis, I think that a combo is the way forward for me,

Re: 5.25" Disk Drives for BBC Model B

Hi Mark, I would have liked the combo for the flexibility, but being a newb - I'm not sure whether it will do what I want. Specifically, I want to run CP/M on the Beebb, and I don't know whether I would be able to "sys" a 3.5" drive and/or copy data from a 5.25 to a 3.5 if the system booted from the...

Re: 5.25" Disk Drives for BBC Model B

Thanks for the helpful replies guys! Martin, it really surprised me that a dodgy disk could bu**er your drives! I'll look out for that. Mike, do you have any photos on line of the plinth with the built in drives please? The others, not in the plinth - I take it they are in a single unit stacked one ...

Hence trying here.

Re: Fault finding index

I guess that's the problem with most documentation from the '80s. Officially, the material is stilll under copyright, but whether anyone really cares any more is another question. Many of the hardware and games companies no longer exist. In the case of this document, as it was sponsored by the UK go...

Re: Fault finding index

Hi, I downloaded the troubleshooting document that TopBanana posted a while ago. It looks like a very useful document, but is a bit awkward to use as it is a collection of individual TIF pages. I have combined these into a single PDF document. I note that the original document was produced by the Mi...

Re: What do I need to add a floppy drive to a Model B?

Mark, No, I didn't know that about the screws - I can see why though, I've been into mine 3 times in the last week! I'll try to keep putting the screws back in though, otherwise, I'll end up having to buy replacements when I lose them - like I've just done for my MTX! I had sussed out where the disk...

Re: What do I need to add a floppy drive to a Model B?

Hi Guys, thanks a lot for the info. I was obviously underestimating what was required, I'd hoped just a couple of chips (disk controller and DFS) would do it, but it's obviously more than that. Probably not too difficult, just a wee bit more work. Thanks a lot for the offer Mark (MAK), but no need t...

What do I need to add a floppy drive to a Model B?

Hi, I have a BBC Micro Model B that does not have a floppy disk drive. I guess it was shipped that way as there is no chip in Socket 78 which I think is where the disk controller chip goes? I'm guessing that, as a minimum, I need to get a 8271 controller chip plus some sort of DFS ROM? Is there anyt...

"Ooooh, look at the Scots talking about the weather." - Just wait - it'll be cricket next! "Do you think England had a good summer then?" Do we care? :) " Anyhoo , lets hope we all get a good summer next year (2013)" ^ Good Scots accent there! Echo that though - hopefully it can't be worse than 2012...

Re: A "Hello" and a request for advice please?

I had to read that twice, I thought you were feeding the peasants  Were just on the edge of Aberdeen, but it's still quite a nice area, the most "exotic" wildlife we get are mainly squirrels (just grey, nice to watch, but steal all the food from my bird feeders), foxes (a pain because they dig ...

Re: A "Hello" and a request for advice please?

Martin,

nice website - yours?

My in-laws rent a "summer" cottage (if there is such a thing up here) on the Dinnet Estate, it's a really nice area out there.

Queens Road-ish - posh-ish, so to speak :-)

Re: A "Hello" and a request for advice please?

Hi John, That's a very good point, I was thinking that I'd want the CF to replace floppy disks, but you're right of course - with the USB, I probably wouldn't need it. The CF was the main thing driving me to an external, rather than internal, Datacentre but you've probably changed my mind (again)! A...

Re: A "Hello" and a request for advice please?

Hi John, Thanks for the welcome. Thanks too for the feedback on DataCentre, it does sound like a good option, particularly as I don't have any disks at the moment and the CF option sounds really neat. I'm just trying to convince myself that spending £100 on a free machine is worth doing:-) I think t...

Just had a quick look on eBay and if the CF adapter is not included with the internal model, they are "cheap as chips" on eBay

Re: A "Hello" and a request for advice please?

Thanks again for the pointers Mark, as I see it, it would be nice to have the internal Datacentre, but it does not appear to have CF storage slots? The external is neat, but I'm already struggling for "real estate" on my desk, so an internal would be better. Ho Hum, decisions, decisions - not to men...

Re: A "Hello" and a request for advice please?

Hi Martin, Thanks for the post, yes, I was looking around eBay, saw one of those and was wondering how well they worked, seems like you're happy with it, and as it's at a price much chaper than a Datacentre, it looks just the thing to get me started. I can always upgrade later. It also saves me need...

Hi Stuart,

Thanks a lot for the info, at the moment, I have no software at all, so your tip is very useful. I just need to pick up a tape lead as my Beeb was missing all it's leads. Looks like another trip to eBay is on the cards.
