Re: Acorn Communicators on TV… in 1996

Oh Steve, how could you watch Bugs? A bit like a medical professional watching Holby City - surely you'd be cringing at the technical inaccuracies. For example, I recall one scene where they used a Psion Series 3 to hack an electronic lock (in the back of a lorry they were trapped in), using some wi...

Re: Obtain an Amiga

OK, My A1200 is in pristine condition (it actually had a new keyboard fitted so there is no yellowing), has an internal CF card fitted and an accelerator board (68030 I believe) which incorporates additional RAM. The CF card has a PCMCIA adapter with it. It's boxed with manuals, PSU (which is a bit ...

How do bad caps on the A1200 manifest?

Asking because I have one that I am thinking of selling, but maybe I should recap first. In which case, which caps?

There are also a bunch of Sun servers if you like that sort of thing, though you'll need a fork-lift truck to move them by the look of things.

Re: Epson HX20 - first laptop !EVER! 1981+

I'm still looking for a working display module for mine. :( The main board seems to be fine and the module kindly sent to me by VCF member Koolstar42 has expired (it was only partially working, but enough for me to see the menu being rendered). I think my keyboard is flaky too, but I have a spare. T...

This is on page 10 of the September 1981 edition of Computing Today, which I am presently scanning ready to upload to the Archive. Oh, I thought you were going to say something like "I connected the power rails to my very rare 8" disk drives the wrong way round, and now the controller boards are toasted". Happens all the time - ask me how I know! (Hint: https://stardot.org.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=16622&hilit=megastor#p22...

Re: Where to find retro kit...?

Unfortunately “the market” has cottoned on to the collectibility of these things.

Finding an old Speccy in a box for a fiver (“Take £4 for cash, mate?”) in a car boot sale is a thing of the past.

Sometimes you get lucky on the unusual sites, though.

Re: Which soldering iron?

+1 for the Hakko. Although mine seems to have a temperamental plug at the moment. Why they chose a DIN plug to connect the iron to the station is beyond me. The other thing is the solder. I use NOS Kester 60/40 rosin cored solder (that is, the "old fashioned" stuff) and it flows way better than mode...

I said all options drop into the monitor. Screen is still bad but there is enough shown to see it’s in the monitor. It doesn’t look like there’s any special ROMs, so the other options showing are hard to explain. The screen hardware is faulty. This module was sent to me by someone and he said it has...

Another broken computer: Epson HX-20

Hi Just got one of those HX-20s from a well known auction site , "untested". I've opened it up and I can see why, now. The NiCD battery has leaked and the display and cassette ribbon cables are eaten away. Question is, how viable is it to repair? Ideally I'd be looking for spares, but I could just w...
