Re: No such thing as a stupid question but...

Thanks for that. So the official answer is unless its a Sideways RAM cartridge then probably... And if it doesn't work you may need to hack the cartridge or at least replace a chip to get it to work (again probably). The reason I asked is because of this ebay item . I figure even if the Master Split...

Re: Fixing a "Broken Directory"

Copying the sector back to &F2 didn't do it. I've re-initialised the disc as it really seems that the disc structure was beyond repair :-(

Cool, thanks. It makes sense that they would be pin compatible but I didn't know for sure.

...this may well be the exception that proves the rule :-)

Are the Elk plus 1 and Master cartridge slots pin compatible?

Re: Fixing a "Broken Directory"

Well, syncing up the cycle bytes didn't work. In fact, they make the parent directory "broken" when they are the same.... odd. I'm afraid all bets are off with this drive as it was corrupted due to a failing RAM buffer chip IC14 as fixed in this thread @beebmaster, sector &F2 is completely empty and...

Fixing a "Broken Directory"

I've been reading a couple of threads on here about fixing a broken directory using ADT. Unfortunately they aren't really too clear on whatmto do... Here are a couple of screenshots of the disc structure showint the directory so if someone could take a look and point out any obvious issues, please l...

Re: Nearly cooked one of my beebs tonight...

Well, I swapped out the chip about 3 hours ago using the one in my broken issue 4 machine and up to now things seem to be working correctly. I'll be putting it through its paces later as I'm going to have to re-type the program I lost in the "broken directory" but right now it definately looks like ...

Re: Nearly cooked one of my beebs tonight...

I've just been reading the service manual as I noticed that link 26 wasnt made at all on this Beeb. It turns out that the Video ULA is the earlier late type VTI chip that requires S26 to be unmade and pin 17 of IC2 to be connected to pin 26 on the Video ULA because of a bug in the Video ULA chip I a...

Re: Nearly cooked one of my beebs tonight...

IC14 is socketed but it's under the ATPL board so I'm going to leave it until the morning to swap out... They're pretty cheap on RS so if it turns out to be that I may just buy a few spares :) The fan BTW kicks out so much air that half the board is cooler than room temp whilst it's running so altho...

Re: Nearly cooked one of my beebs tonight...

I'm out walking the dog at the mo... It's a VTI ULA and it has the same sort of heat sink fitted that you fitted to my other Beeb. I've been running an experiment for the last couple of hours and it's definately a heat issue.... Running with the config in the photo works but isn't ideal.... I'll che...

I thought I'd see if I could get screen corruption in MODEs other than 7 so I left Elite at the "Load new commander" screen for an hour... Sure enough, this is what happened.

Re: Nearly cooked one of my beebs tonight...

Well, it appears that I was wrong about the Video ULA being the source of the problem... After about 3 hours of heavy programming use this evening with lots of MODE 7 and MODE 2 work, things started to go awry again. This time, it didn't seem to be video related at all. I think I have a general over...

Nearly cooked one of my beebs tonight...

When I was 12 I wrote an art package for the Beeb which I thought I'd lost to the mists of time but last week I found a print out of the source code in a dusty old folder in the loft... Anyway, I decided that I would re-enter the program into the Beeb and let others play with it when I was done. I'm...

Yes, I got FTPc working eventually and it was some of the libraries that shipped with the latest toolbox that aren't 26bit compatible that were causing the problems I was seeing in the first place. Sorting out that let me run FTPc.

Re: JGH's Teletext GetPages utility

It was definately the discs, I've now got a stack of 12 floppies all from my latest batch that I bought that refuse to format in PC, Amiga and BBC driven floppy drives :( The problem with those discs is that on their first format and verify, they appear to be just fine but within 10 minutes of use t...

This was a "typed in" program I had and lost back in 1982/83. I've been looking around for it for a while and I ended up finding a screenshot of the entire code listing so I ran it through an OCR web service, corrected a few OCR errors and have been playing it on and off for a couple of days. It's d...

Ok, so a long, long time ago, I had the foresight to transfer most of my bought cassette based programs onto audio CD just in case they degraded. It turns out that I did a good thing :-). @Greg - The floppy drives are only 4 months old and work fine with any other disc other than these TDK discs just fine. I very much doubt that the heads need cleaning at this early stage in their life. @Mark - I'm pretty confident now that the faults I was seeing on the Beeb I sent to you for repair...

Well, there's good news and bad... After tinkering with the program and there being no change, half way through one of my tests, the floppy gave up with disc fault 18. I then burnt through another 6 new floppies until I found one that would format. Once formatted and the original progr...

JGH's Teletext GetPages utility

So I've just downloaded GetPages from MDFS.net and it seems to work great, going through the motions of grabbing a page (or set of pages) and then the disc activity light goes on, the disc whirs but there is no file on the disc once it's completed :?: It's most odd. I'm running the Acorn Teletext ad...
