Re: Midlands ABUG November 2018

Hi Alex, I passed it on to Phil M recently to see if he could fix it up, as if you remember it wasn't in the best shape! Let me check how he's getting on, maybe we could bring it down to Leicester in November! HI Dave , Sorry this passed me by totally. Ive booked the same place and rooms as last ye...

Yes, just set the drive select jumper to be drive 1, assuming no twists in the cable. You can use the same cable that connected the 3.5" drive.

Re: Missing old/new Electron Expansions

Again, speaking personally, I wouldn't want to take funds from a pot like that as I'd feel an obligation to get something done and that I'd be letting people down if I didn't. Pressure != productivity for me in these things :D

Gosh, only just caught up on this - don't be discouraged! I really was just expressing a personal opinion. More living elks is always a good thing, and I'm quite sure there are a good number of people who'd want something like this. What I was sort of trying to get across in this and the other threa...

Re: Acorn Archimedes A310 with VIDC monitor recommendations

Without the VIDC enhancer, the BL912 will give you all the PAL screen modes quite happily. Not sure what'll happen trying it with the "pseudo VGA" modes without an enhancer, but on an arc of that generation, you weren't really looking at VGA. You could drop PaulV a note and see if he's got any enhan...

Re: FreeFi-232 v2

Fixed - basically the flash was borked, it was booting badly and leaving that pin having a fight with the pull up. A bit of reflashing with esptool.py and it's back up and running properly :)

Re: Proposed: "The Ultimate Electron Upgrade"

It is nice to be able to break even though :D - anything involving large programmable logic isn't going to be too cheap unless there's an economy of scale (e.g. those beebscsis cost nearly £80 as a one off, and you can only really get the price down by building 10 or more). You need to be sure you c...

Re: Proposed: "The Ultimate Electron Upgrade"

How many people buy elks to tinker, and how many to relive retro-gaming? I'd suspect (although I could be wrong!) the majority fall into the later category, and if there's nothing that takes advantage of the peripheral, then there aren't going to be that many people who'd be interested in getting it...

Re: FreeFi-232 v2

So - I've done the first test build of this Hooray! :) It sort of not quite works from a programming front.... GPIO0 (iDTR on the schematic) needs to be at 3.3V for normal operation and pulled low for programming mode to be activated. For some reason it's sitting at around 2V which is nicely right o...

Oh no, do what you like with your elk :D It just feels, to me (and this is me personally, I don't expect anyone else to feel the same and I'm not saying for one second there's a right or wrong here), roughly akin to pulling the motherboard out and swapping it for a raspberry pi!

I do confess to thinking that the elk really *is* its ULA - replace that and you've not really got an elk anymore?

Or is that just me?

C12 won't explode - it's a ceramic :) Eeeeeyyyaaa... the reason components have heat shrink over them is to contain possible explosive failure. That's why you see heatshrink or boots on MOVs (metal oxide varistors), non HRC fuses and similar... if it wasn't a concern they'd have saved the £0.01 on ...

C12 won't might explode - it's a ceramic :) They don't go bad (well, not usually). You'll be fine :D check you put the startup cap in the right way around, make sure nothing underneath looks like it'd got to hot (bulging/discoloured), then whack it on and see what happens.
