Re: BBC Master PSU caps blown

Just received this in the post today, thank you! Also reserved the other parts at my local Maplin store, along with a 3AA battery box and some batteries to replace the battery with (I opened the lid and it seems like at some point in the dim and distant past my dad fitted a 1289 lantern battery). Re: 1MHz from 16Mhz on Elk Cartridge port

Shonky electron electronics is what it is. Lol - works for me :D I presume the traces are 500ns per div? It's been a while since I played with an Elk (iminent though for UPURS) but I notice that there's no clock increase for a simple write to Page $FC. (Not sure what I was expecting to see for sing...

Re: 1MHz from 16Mhz on Elk Cartridge port

Have you trimmed the probes? The top trace (clock) looks a little rounded which could be that the probe hasn't been compensated properly. Of course, could also just be the signal itself but I found that both of mine were way off on receipt. Yeah, I did the compensation on both. Nice and square on t...

Clearly, your new Rigol will be your friend here.... Oooh, it is.... Much as I was very fond of my analogue scope, this is certainly doing the business... I'm thinking of popping along as IMHO it's a great venue, although since we've got an 8 week old baby now, I might have to bring the family over to Manc and just pop to the lass for a few jars in the afternoon. The pub's fine with little'uns too, especially the non-mobile variety (ours unfortunatel...

Re: BBC Master PSU caps blown

It would probably be easier if I could get both parts from Maplin as there is a Maplin store in Cambridge I could reserve and collect at. Would I be correct in thinking these are the right parts: http://www.maplin.co.uk/metallised-paper-rfi-class-x2-capacitors-98166 N69CN for C2, N65CN for C1 http:...

Do you know if they need any bits of kit? I work practically next door so it's fairly easy for me to bring in a couple of bits and bobs (an Atom with AtomMMC for example).

BTW, anyone who's still searching reliable SIDs:

sidcollector is back in action on eBay - I can (again) vouch for his wares being all good.

Re: Faulty Atom

Thanks for the reply. IC9 has had a new turned pin socket because you need the 3.58MHz out of it for the noise killer, and the original socket was becoming loose due to the header stretching it. In fact, thinking back I replaced that socket first since I noticed that roughly the same symptoms earli...

Re: Faulty Atom

The 8255 is responsible for the keyboard and the VDU controller (both on port A) so if it's being flakey for whatever reason that would reasonably cause the symptoms you're seeing. Clean pins, reseat, swap socket etc.... (which I assume you've already done). I think beebmaster has some 8255s in his ...

Re: 1MHz from 16Mhz on Elk Cartridge port

Thanks Martin, again, that's what I thought was going on there. Righty, so thinking further about this, can I not just gate the counter using NPGFC (nINFC) and NPGFD (nINFD) which I assume are only going to be high when devices on the bus are being accessed and are available signals on the cartridge...

Re: Tektronix 465B gone wobbly...

Yeah, they'll safely discharge in time but I've never really seen any major storage caps in scopes. If you switch the scope on and then unplug it without turning off first, many of the caps will discharge in the last few milliseconds as they attempt to support the dying scope. Then, leaving it a co...

Re: BBC Master PSU caps blown

Hello! http://www.sprow.co.uk/bbc/howto.htm#powersupply is what you need to know. It's not hard. The problem is, at least, #3 on that list. The Master PSU only has one set of holes for the C2, so you need one with the same pin pitch. Maplin were doing a suitable replacement for C1 (a 10nf WIMA X2), ...

Re: Tektronix 465B gone wobbly...

Hi Daniel :) A bit more testing on the 2445 later down the line revealed that much of the supply regulation side had gone awry with the caps so valuing my time above the need for the scope given I now had the Rigol, I decided to salvage a few bits and pieces and dump it! May not be your problem but...

Does touching any of the controls make any difference? On my old 'scope some of the switch contacts on some of the controls have developed intermittent contacts. I just operate the switches half a dozen times. It is only a temporary fix, but hey, it gets it working long enough for the work I do. If...

Re: 1MHz from 16Mhz on Elk Cartridge port

Hi Daniel I don't know that much about the way the MPU and the clock signal to it work on the Elk (other than RAM access is at 1MHz and ROM and I/O access is at 2MHz). However, I can tell you a little about MPU address buses. Address line A15 will be high whenever the program counter in the MPU is ...

And again... Not strictly 8-bit hardware but anyhow... My venerable Tek 465B has gone all flakey, the trace vertical keeps jumping about randomly. I was asked about Folio a while back, but unfortunately I was unable to find copies of those images I created back in '06 (I suffered a hard drive crash a few years back, so they may have been lost then). I seem to remember in the dim and distant past the BBC had some kind of competition for the CBBC logo / splash page and various were sent in. The odd thing is that with BeebSID disk 5 (the film themes), the 1989/CSG manufactured chip does something weird playing "The great escape", the first 3 notes are loud and then the rest of the tune is much quieter. The other tracks on the disk also seem quiet. Using any of the MOS SIDs or for that ...
