8BS availability

As 8BS goes, it's on Joel's home network and has been intermittently available with no really long outage AFAICT. The reason it last went down is due to a power cut, so I'm told. your UPS not on its own concrete plinth? shame on you... :D Also he has had to throttle the bandwidth as people have been...

Re: Converting disc games to tape

Can somepne confirm that all disc games will work on acorn 1770 dfs but not on acorn adfs or watford ddfs? Well behaved games (those that use only official system calls etc.) will work on DFS and DDFS. Some will fail on ADFS because, among other things, the directory structure is hierarchical. A lo...

DDOS and the disc saga

There is a (slightly blurry) photo of the later Opus board on 8BS. If you don't get to see the underside of your board, mirror-flip the image and compare it with the solder joint pattern on the top side. The saga of Acorn floppy disc hardware has often been written about; in summary, Acorn designed ...

Ecce Romani!

Ah, memories! PUER ET PUELLA IN ATRIO AMBULANT ..plus a display of a block graphic boy and girl goose-stepping around the hall. When excited they would run about in the piscina ... it must have been in winter. The title you're looking for is Ecce Romani by the Scottish Classics Group (Longman Publis...

Drive select/Motor spin

It's been a while since I attached a 5.25" drive to my PC, I read a text file that said I had to connect two lines together on the floppy drive cable (e.g. by jamming a short wire underneath two pins of the card edge connector.) I can't for the life of me remember which two, as the document is ...

I believe the intention of the &0003 chunk is to give you somewhere to place an icon or thumbnail for the software in the UEF file. So you can display the front covers while browsing a local folder full of games. Also it is a place to store lo-res maps, function key strips, code tables a la Jet ...

(Announce) UEF inlay scans

For what it's worth, if you've ever heard of XV I've placed an extension for it on my Web page, to read and write images (inlay scans) in the UEF format. It's an old image editor I know but fairly easy to extend, and the author of XV has done a lot of work for us (thanks John!) AFAICT this appears t...

EPROM eraser

On the subject of expensive equipment, one economical source of ultraviolet light for erasing eproms is a pond steriliser. If Index is still trading you can get a 4 watt model for £19.99 (cat no. 345-625.) AFAICT other sorts of lamps e.g. fly killers, sunlamps, disco blacklights aren't as effective....

The trick (for anyone wondering), is to embed an open/close tag in the middle of the BBTag you want to be displayed as text, That's not what I did... :D I put [ instead of [. And to get that I type [ [ and it all goes downhill from there. ("&" just displays...

CSW support would be useful for games that might not be available in UEF form. I know it's getting off-topic, but are you saying the UEF spec is inadequate for these titles *scribbles furiously - new challenges for Kleen* or nobody has yet made UEFs of them? I would be hard pressed to think of a si...

1700 multi-sector access

Ah yes, good idea to support state files from the command line. Spectrum users who deal in snapshots might wonder why this was missing :D There's a bugette related to multi-sector reads/writes on the 1770 disc controller. Not generally noticeable, except DRQ is called one too many times per sector. ...

I'm having no luck downloading the files. Assuming they are Basic programs, you can scoop them into disc images. Bbcim is the easiest way I can recommend. BeebEm bugs

My two bits: 01 First, an enhancement to the tape control window to show UEF marker blocks (0x0120). So you can wind to the appropriate version of a game on tape (when the filenames don't give a clue.) The other one is more obscure, the 1770 chip issues one too many data requests. DDOS etc. counts 2...

Codes? That's news to me!

I remember at the time my sister told me I should jump/drop vertically onto the exit, and only when it was flashing a certain colour, but that didn't achieve anything extra. I assume you mean type-in codes, which would be very handy.

IIRC, Superior also owns the copyright on Acornsoft and Blue Ribbon titles. There goes free Elite. There is also a note in TBL stating that at some point Robert had to shut off Computer Concepts images from the public. Together with 4Mations those are the only software houses I've heard being vocal ...

DDOS / EDOS differences

I wrote one attempt at a patch over the weekend, after staring at the disassembly and plugging breakpoints in the BeebEm debugger. BTW, kudos to Mike for adding the feature in BeebEm 2.0, it has given no end of insight. I eventually found the unused hook and blatantly re-used the Osword code from DD...

Internals / origins of EDOS

Hello, just christening this section with a request for some details on the mysterious variant EDOS filing system. Here http://nelsonit.net/~jon/BBCMicro/2004/06/05/183708.html is my original description in the BBC Micro mailing list. Firstly if anyone knows about the origins of EDOS, such as where ...
