Re: Worth Taking a Look At

If it does contain some interesting ROMs, what would be the best way to dump them? Is there a piece of software you can use to dump to a floppy or something, or would it require special hardware? This was hurriedly written at CGE UK 2005 to rip DDOS 3.46 off Cris Boylan's machine :) 10 REM >GETROM2...

Re: Disc protection / 8271 commands

If you've formatted a disc with 10 256-byte sectors (as per Acorn DFS), and then perform a multi-sector read from sector 0 with a sector size of 4096, will it return a complete image dump of the track starting from the first byte of data of sector 0, including all the inter-block gaps, sync bytes, ...

Welcome Alexi :)

Did a tiny bit of 3D stuff too, did you have a moment of wondering why objects behind the camera reappeared, upside down? :D

If nobody comes up with Doom on the Elk you could always try Second Life on an Apple II (cheating very slightly).

Re: Disc protection / 8271 commands

This is an area I don't know very much about, and I have a question for anyone who might know. I was looking through the Advanced Disk User Guide, and in the 'format track' command, we have: The third parameter specifies two fields. The most significant three bits represents the sector size [...]. ...

Re: RetroVision / 5-7 February 2010 / Oxford

RetroVision was a great event and a pleasure to attend. Thanks to everyone who was there, especially our very own Arcadian who helpfully networked to organise a roomshare and a lift back. Dad and I arrived at 9.30 Friday after an unexpectedly short 2½ hour trip and met Woody.cool looking lost in the...

Another weird format was Linear CDi. It was Video CD format, but not quite - it used the same digital MPEG-1 encoding, but you could only play it on a CDi player with a video cart. Mark. Oh that brings back memories - our school had a CDi title called "Making the Grade" which was like a g...

Re: What new hardware would you want ?

A Tube ULA with shallow FIFOs would presumably work, but block when writing to the screen. The only huge buffer is R1 parasite-to-host which is 24 bytes, enough for four PLOT commands. (Perhaps with so many pins needed, the space for the big buffer came free?) However I imagine an interrupt-driven s...

Re: ROMs ROMs ROMs

:-k Fine, point conceded, but consider that transplanting to foil is equivalent to transplanting to a PCB (with conductive contacts) If the chip has a static charge you're still in trouble.

Re: ROMs ROMs ROMs

The usual advice with polystyrene and foil is not to reuse a set of holes. Using multiple foil layers improves the strength of contact with each pin and wrapping the whole block to make a Faraday cage keeps electric fields out (or in.) IMHO the result is approximately as good as any given insertion ...

All issues have the card edge connectors as they're where the test equipment was plugged in for burning-in, they are fouled by the IDC connectors fitted after testing but are visible on the underside of the board.

@iomanoid: I'd say check the earth connection from the plug to the PSU casing, either with a DMM or as Colin says, with a light bulb and battery. The Beeb is designed to be earthed, so for safety's sake it should be, and it also helps reduce interference. Some stupid person disconnected earth on min...

It's pretty crude if it only has a quad-op-amp and very few passive components - a basic sound level meter at best. If that's all, then why not just use the analogue port? So it could perhaps be a simple delta-sigma ADC to sample sound, with a bit-bashing routine on the Beeb doing most of the work....

I'd checked it out. Obviously a great use of new technology but fraid to say it didn't blow me away in the way TYB's stuff did.
