Re: My final unanswered Exile question

It's not usual on the Electron version, though I believe I have seen this sort of behaviour before when experimenting with lots of collectable objects, like grenades. I think it's just the engine catching up after a teleport event. If there's a way of taking a snapshot with jsbeeb, patching it, and ...

It's from Jungle Journey, a game whose use of procedurally generated maps was inspired by Elite and Exile. :)

Here are the extra ones I found, i.e. new very minor Exile secrets? Well done on compiling this list! You're certainly drilling down into the inner workings with this. :) 1) Aliased stone door. The stone door you'll recognize is (5c, c0) which is the third stone door in a row that you use the canno...

Re: Mouse X Y doesn't work

When we had problems with our A3000 mouse - it responded unreliably to motion and appeared to "stick" every now and then - we tested the continuity of the wires in the cable. I seem to remember that the flexing of the cable near the mouse had caused the wires to degrade over time, so we ended up sho...

Re: RiscPC Second CPU slot ARM possible?

Maybe the primary motivation was compatibility with other CPU architectures, so having a second ARM wasn't a design goal? Let's imagine what might have happened if ARM second processors were available with the current design. From a product support perspective it would have been confusing for users ...

Out of interest, the code on the Electron is slightly different to that on the BBC machines. I'll try and organise my notes on this and plot my own map based on what I have.

Re: My final unanswered Exile question

I have to say that looking at the game without all the mapped areas is, well, bizarre. I'm so used to the official map that seeing anything different feels very wrong! It's fascinating to look at how the game was put together. Given the number of systems in play, I'm amazed that it ever got finishe...

Re: My final unanswered Exile question

Later in the game once you've collected the pill, its possible to swim through this and you discover these two huge caverns - but with nothing in them! (The cavern to the left is also part of the windy tunnel and has some interesting effects when you swim through it.) It was probably just a memory ...

Re: Mega Games Cartridge for the Electron MGC

If you haven't updated the menu program recently then it should be fairly easy to do this, especially if you are supplying the EEPROM reading/writing tools in a separate ROM bank. I'll update the GitHub repository to make it easier to see how to build a new menu ROM with my tooling. I'll also try to...

Re: MAME: Video handling

Just to finish up my side of this digression, I should say that I was loading using Elkulator's "Really Fast" loading option. Switching it off after loading the second file, I still get a couple of minutes or so of black screen until it finally shows the high speed run - no menu first. Anyway, if ei...

Re: MAME: Video handling

Interesting. Elkulator displays a black screen for a long time then shows the high speed run (demo). It may show a menu beforehand, but not 11 seconds after loading supposedly finishes, and I don't sit and watch the emulator so, when it finally shows something and I notice, that's what I see. I have...

I've attached an archive containing two ROMs to this message. If it crashes with data on the screen while loading then you need to swap the ROMs around so that the other ROM starts first. Hope that makes sense. :)

Re: MAME: Video handling

I should write a test case for the tape interface palette/timer trick, just to make it easier (and quicker) to see if an emulator is handling it properly. Southern Belle takes ages to start even when it works. :) I suspect that it doesn't work at all when run from DFS, as Elkulator manages the tape ...

Re: MAME: Video handling

Thanks for mentioning that. It explains why running a ROM conversion of the game shows less of the playing area than it should do. I'd have to "unplug" the ROM it loaded from before jumping into the game code and I'm not too sure how I'd do that reliably. :)
