Hi there! I was the one who invited you here. :) Feel free to post an introduction in the introduce yourself forum. We like to hear how people got here and what other retro kit they might have. :) Your Electron doesn't sound as bad as I had imagined. It looks like the experts will be giving you some...

Re: Emulator setup to make all ROM area writes use bank 15 SWR

A couple of non-technical questions from me. :) Was the protection on the tape versions (particularly on the Electron) ever shown to be effective at countering "piracy"? I realise that the Beeb scene had lots of users who could crack games to disk and share them that way but there didn't seem to be ...

Sorry to hear about your original Electron, though it seems you have more than made up for losing it in recent years. :)

Maths 'O' Level Revision II Geometry and Set Theory by Shield Software

In this video, it looks like someone has picked up a copy of Maths 'O' Level Revision II Geometry and Set Theory by Shield Software. Acorn Electron World only lists the first volume, so I wonder if this is in the education archive.

The guy in the video didn't seem too impressed with it. :)

Re: Nested archives in SparkFS

Conpressing everything to a spark file (ie /arc) will allow zip files within it and works okay, but it still tries tode-archive any spark directories found within the parent. Disconcertingly, with varying degrees of success. I couldn't understand exactly what the problem was with nested Spark archi...

Re: Any short type-ins for unattended Beebs?

And to round off for now, here's one that switches screen modes periodically:

Code: Select all

10MODE2
20?&FE00=0
30M%=2
40A%=&18
50B%=0
60REPEAT
70!(&3000+RND(&4FFF))=RND
80?&FE03=A%
90A%=A%+1
100IF A%=&40 A%=&18
110B%=B%+1
120IF B%=256 B%=0:M%=M%+1:?&FE07=(M%AND7)*8
130UNTIL FALSE
Edit: Video on YouTube.

Re: Any short type-ins for unattended Beebs?

This can probably be shortened but is a more colourful version of the previous program:

Code: Select all

10MODE5
20VDU23,1,0;0;0;0;
30A%=&18
40REPEAT
50!(&3000+RND(&4FFF))=RND
60?&FE03=A%
70A%=A%+1
80IF A%=&40 A%=&18
90UNTIL FALSE
Edit: Also try MODE 2 instead of MODE 5 for even more colours!

Ah, it turns out I had run some of the previous programs before running this one. Try the next iteration on this theme:

Code: Select all

10FOR A%=8 TO &20
20?&FE03=A%
25!(&1000+(RND AND &7FFF))=RND
30NEXT
40RUN

Re: Any short type-ins for unattended Beebs?

One for the Electron. Perhaps someone can convert it to the Beeb:

Code: Select all

10FOR A%=8 TO &20
20?&FE03=A%
30NEXT
40RUN
&FE03 controls the top 6 bits of the screen start address.

geraldholdsworth wrote:Going back to the Electron - I've often wondered why use the Plus 1 cartridge slots, and not the expansion bus on the back of the main machine?
It gives you two expansion interfaces for the price of one, especially since a lot of add-ons were made in cartridge form rather than use the bus directly.

It would be interesting to know if there are problems with Codename Droid, or any other games for that matter, when running from the MGC with an AP6 present. Indeed, it would be useful to know about any incompatibilities that people have discovered.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was some kind of screen reader for the BBC Micro. The BBC Micro was massive in education and alternative access in the UK much like the Apple II was in the USA. All kinds of forgotten stuff was made for it. It occurred to me that one way that a screen reader ...

Re: Atomic AGD

Sorry Kees, it's not quite as simple to use as I'd like. :( You have to use the tools/frames2avi.py Python script to create an AVI file: tools/frames2avi.py video.VID video.avi That tends to be quite large and probably not ready for YouTube either, but you can at least use a normal video conversion ...

I was including invalid audio data in the video which YouTube didn't like. Since the upload process can pad the videos itself, I reverted the default video size to 512 x 384, though you can specify a different size if you like. My first successful upload is now online . The video is 60 frames per se...

Could that be fixed in the python code, by scaling/padding? Yes, I'll pad it, I think. Seems the standard resolutions supported by YouTube are: - 2160p: 3840x2160 - 1440p: 2560x1440 - 1080p: 1920x1080 - 720p: 1280x720 - 480p: 854x480 - 360p: 640x360 - 240p: 426x240 I think the 480p option with padd...

Dave, I've sent you a pull request for your Atomulator repository on GitHub.

I also recorded a video and uploaded it to YouTube but it seems that 512 x 384 is a video size that causes problems as, even after a few minutes, it's still not been processed.
