Re: Can't rejuvenate CSW or UEF

What exactly is the lubrication? When tapes have a high pitched squeal I place them on a radiator for 10 minutes or whatever it takes. Any higher temperature would melt the plastic.

Re: Can't rejuvenate CSW or UEF

You haven't said exactly what file you are converting to WAV. Early tapes did not have the dummy byte in the carrier tone, which is needed for a problem with the BBC hardware. I think Defender is one of them although there might be more than one version and obviously Planetoid is a version of it.

Re: Haunted Abbey protection

I've not looked at it for a while but I remember that some odd stuff is thrown in between data bytes and the actual data is unaffected. B-Em only implemented reading the more important UEF chunks and skipped all the odd stuff. The game loaded on it.

Re: UberCassette Multiplatform tape archiving software

I have a new version of CSW Viewer at world of spectrum that would probably interest you.

I usually keep the volume quite low now or the hiss inbetween files would be amplified and might start creating readable waves. MakeUEF is mainly designed for accuracy and not to read the worst of recordings.

Re: UberCassette Multiplatform tape archiving software

I don't see much that can't be done already. Accurate CSW and UEF files can already be made with csw.exe by Ramsoft or indirectly with CSW Viewer and MakeUEF makes UEF files. A new version of CSW Viewer will be ready soon.

Re: BBC tape & disk copy protection - newbie questions

This is the cassette player and amplifier I use. I used to use a different amplifier but I'm fixing it. This amplifier used to have digital components that shifted waves 90 degrees which is something to avoid. It went faulty and I had it repaired at a Sony Centre and it now has analogue components. ...

Re: BBC tape & disk copy protection - newbie questions

I haven't tried anything by those publishers but I would guess they have not done a lot to make the files hard to read. Probably they've used 8O1 or 8E1 data blocks somewhere. You would be best to make CSW files from WAV files by following my guide "How to record WAV files for conversion to CSW.pdf"...

Re: Tape turbo-loader

There is a dummy byte in the leading tone of files which is necessary with all BBCs but not the Electron. You would be asking for trouble by not including it. You could use the standard block format. You could assign say bit 1 of the block flag to indicate compressed data. The compressed data format...

Re: Wanted, uef BBC copy of Video's Revenge by Budgie

I tried to make a UEF file from the BBC tape but it probably had dropouts. One side has slightly different data to the other which is fairly unusual. Using MakeUEF these switches are needed with the labeled side: -z 96 8N1 -z 98 BBC -z 99 8N1. For the unlabeled side substitute 100 for 99.

speed reduction cable

I was wondering if any electronics people had any opinion on this speed reduction cable. It seems to connect power to 12V and ground to 5V to effectively have 7V power. I was looking at one in a shop and it must have been made wrong because the power was connected to 5V and ground to 12V. I could pr...

Re: Chuckie Egg... with more colour!

The Spectrum version had to have the lifts and the bird cage yellow to avoid colour attribute clashes. White lifts were probably seen as an improvement. If the cage was another colour the bird would have to be behind the wires.

Re: Brain-teaser for a Friday afternoon

The length of the leftmost vertical line is r-3. Using pythagoras's theorem the other length of the triangle is the square root of 55-r^2+6r. Using pythagoras's theorem again to find the radius, which is the hypotenuse of a triangle not drawn, take the square root of ((r-3)^2 + 55-r^2+6r).

I'm still wondering what the story is. Did Atarisoft stop producing Defender for the BBC before it was released? Did Acorn use the Atari source code or is Planetoids completely written separately?

I would prefer the File->LoadTape menu option to be moved to the Tape Control window where it is more intuitive. The cassette player is a self controlled piece of hardware apart from motor control.

I presume DFSExplorer does not work for UEF files.

One program I was looking at makes the Bad Program error after being loaded but still runs. They obviously corrupted the code somehow to prevent it from being viewed. Any idea how they did that?

Defender is on the preservation site. It had a problem with emulators that made the aliens bunched up. I think someone was speaking about the cause of that once.

Re: BeebEm save state UEFs

The UEF files at the preservation site have a secondary extention hq. So they are name.hq.uef. Something such like state could be a secondary extention for state images. If someone needs custom chunks along with the standard chunks for images then the format probably wants some updating.

I assume then that the state files are not being written compressed. I have a program I call UEF Viewer which displays messages, the version numbers and the number of phase shift changes.
