Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

Thanks for the dump Lardo and the comparison Pernod. That wasn't the result I was hoping for! Does that narrow things down to either my BBC being weird and/or the chips in the blue wrapper of my Replay being different? I can't think of what it could be other than one of those two things. Unless ther...

Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

Ah, sorry, my picture only illustrated one offset north, as I didn't want to bend my decoupling capacitor any further than it had already gone. Hey no worries, it will teach me to count:) While I didn't need to tilt my board up because my capacitors were much more squat than yours, I tilted ...

Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

Update: I offset the board 2 steps north, to connect the grey lead to pin 5, and now the Replay device actually worked, no erratic behaviour, but the colour problems persist. So I guess all 3 connection points work so far as the Replay program is concerned, but there is something different between L...

Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

No, there's a difference to them: I've just had a horrible realisation, after I edited my recent post to correct which pin number I wrote! That made me realise I was getting in a muddle with pin numbers. I'd even thought that there were 7 pins per side on IC20 as I was typing that! I now think I co...

Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

For more details on logical colours, have a look at chapter 29 in the BBC User Guide (page 140 onwards if you're using a paper copy or PDF). Yes I was hoping it was something like that and therefore I could fix things manually by editing the Replay files. But if I can, I haven't yet understood how,...

Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

I seem to recall that Bird Strike works with Replay and doesn't seem to have any colour issues. (I had other issues, but nothing to do with colours!): Just tried that, it was ... interesting. As the Replay screen loaded, the colours looked fine. Then when it started running, I think the colours wer...

Here's Vindaloo, before and after Replay. This is a recent attempt, after I verified that colours worked fine with my simple BASIC program, so the problem is still there:

Do you have an example of a popular game which seems to work fine on your Replay, and I'll try that? I seem to recall that Bird Strike works with Replay and doesn't seem to have any colour issues. Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

IC24 pin 5 is electrically equivalent to IC22 pin 8, so if you're happy that you got good contact on IC24 there's no need to try relocating the wire. (Note that my suggestion was to resolder the grey wire to another pin on the carrier board, not direct to the chip. I may not have made that clear en...

Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

That's a shame. Are you happy that the grey wire pin was making good contact with pin 5, and the other connections were all in place? You could desolder the grey wire from the carrier and solder it to pin 8, to put it on IC22, if you're not sure that you had good contact. Unfortunately, as all I kn...

Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

I don't think my increasingly unreliable keyboard has anything to do with the strange behaviour when the grey lead is on IC24 by the way. Once I realised how unreliable it was becoming, I tried putting it back on IC24, offset so pin 5 was connected. This time I checked all the keys on the keyboard w...

Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

Alternatively, a look at the Beeb's circuit diagram shows that IC22 pin 8 is also connected to IC20 pin 1 and IC24 pin 5. It's possible to sit the carrier board on IC24 in an offset manner so that the grey wire makes contact with pin 5 instead of pin 6. You may need to gently bend one decoupling ca...

Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

In the scanned documents, screen data pages, it goes on about screen data and mentions having to enter some codes. Yes, that's what gives me some hope I can manually fix it for each game save, thanks. But I'm not too optimistic - presumably Vindaloo fixed itself at each new screen because it change...

Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

On that note, did you connect the grey(?) flying lead to IC20 or to IC22? If it's on IC20 pin 7, that demonstrates that the Mk2 software is happy to be wired up according to the Mk1 manual. That's the inverse of me wiring my Mk1 8271 replay up according to the Mk2 manual upthread. The long and the ...

Re: A new MENU system for MMC/Gotek

I've started work on a new menu system for the beeb, the idea was to hopefully make it easier to add and remove games than the Stairway to Hell archive, whilst still keeping the great functionality and also supporting GOTEKs using FlashFloppy (once the relevant FF update is complete). Just installe...

Re: Maximising memory for BASIC program

Fair enough. Just to say, though, that the PRES Advanced BASIC Editor, which includes the "Pack" compaction routine, was a pair of ROMs on a daughter-board(?) that was sold commercially and installed in real Beebs back in the day. So it is definitely an "authentic" vintage Beeb ...

Re: Maximising memory for BASIC program

Thanks guys. I don't want to use trickery like compaction or emulators unless I get desperate. A big part of the fun for me is nostalgia; I'm writing it on a real BBC B and imagining it's the early 80's and I've just got hold of a BBC:) I am willing to go that route if I must but it will sap a lot o...

I'm writing my first BBC BASIC program, learning as I go:) I wanted it to run in MODE 0 but had set up several variables so it could also run in lower res modes if I ran out of memory. Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

My ideas for "Vine Cottage Industries" are along the lines of using surface mount equivalents of the (E)EPROM and logic chips, so they can fit on a single package the fits in the ROM socket, and get rid of the dangling blue bit. I'd also add a solder bridge or jumper so you could reprogra...

Makes sense RE REP. - I hadn't realised that. There is a dot in the manual but it c...

Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

Do note that when run, the *REPLAY command goes off to read the contents of drive 0 before drawing a menu onscreen (and if it's got a Replay disc in, it'll display the save files available). So if you don't have a floppy drive connected, or it fails to find a disc, you could mistake it for an attem...

Re: Vine Micros Mk 2 Replay and Gotek

That is indeed a safe assumption (excluding an intermittent poor contact). I don't like to say things for certain, but I'm inclined to say that my Replay ROM is inserted correctly then, 99.9%. I've rebooted several times, and the result is always the same, I get the message, but typing *REPLAY does...

Re: Word processing advice

I loved Wordwise Plus. The fact of entering text in a 40-column screen when it probably would be printed out using 80 columns (perhaps less; with 80 characters across 200mm. of the 210mm. wide page, an extra centimetre either side would leave 72 columns usable) and the use of embedded codes to indi...

Re: Removing TurboMMC, installing DFS

Hi again. Chip pins are always numbered counterclockwise from the orientation notch or dot. For example, here's a pinout for a 27C128 ROM chip, of the type the Beeb supports: http://circuits.datasheetdir.com/257/27C128-pinout.jpg The 6502 CPU will be numbered likewise. You can typically pull up a p...

Have a look at this thread for a Gotek Menu system. Wow, that definitely swings me strongly in favour of the Gotek! I didn't think that would be possible, but it looks like it's the Gotek that's been programmed, not the BBC, so the Gotek can insert the appropriate disk upon selection? Anyway, I'll ...

Re: Removing TurboMMC, installing DFS

This sounds very much like a case of worn ROM socket contacts. I've just thought since my previous post: this sounds particularly true as the Replay ROM is the one I've had the most trouble with, and its legs, or the legs of the holder it sits in, are the thin, flat, easily flexed (and broken!) typ...
