Re: Yarrb - redesigned

Hand soldering 0.5mm pitch QFPs is possible, with a little practice and lots of flux :D I've done this exactly once though! It's actually surprisingly easy with some practice. I've soldered a couple of hundred 0.5mm QFP and TSOP parts in this past year without ever terminally messing one up, despit...

Re: SD Interface for Plus 1

Yes, it will. Probably in around a week or so. Anyway, news: the ElkSD-Plus1 is finished, yay! :D I've built the first board on the production PCB design and the CPLD programming is done, so that's pretty much it bar writing the documentation. There's good news and bad, however. Taking advantage of ...

Re: SD Interface for Plus 1

Small update. I've been miserably, wretchedly sick for much of the past week so not much progress to report. However, the batch of PCBs I ordered have arrived. The ElkSD-Plus1 boards look very natty with their gold plating and I'll be building some for testing at the weekend. I also ordered a few te...

Re: SD Interface for Plus 1

Thanks for all the expressions of interest! They've given me enough confidence to up the first batch size; I was only going to do half a dozen Plus 1 boards, but that clearly isn't going to be enough. The Master version is still very much up in the air right now. The simple no-RAM Master specific bo...

Re: SD Interface for Plus 1

It only works in the Elk, I'm afraid. Hardware wise, you're right, it's not a big deal to make the board Master compatible. But actually getting it to work would require more complexity in the CPLD programming and a master version of MMFS stored in the flash chip. Now, this isn't insurmountable. I o...

Re: SD Interface for Plus 1

For the Plus 1 board PAGE will be at &E00. The cartridge has 16K of sideways RAM on it so none of the Electron's memory is used up. Current plan is there will be a case (same colour and general look as the ElkSD64) but I'm not sure if the first batch will have cases by default, it may be an optional...

Re: SD Interface for Plus 1

Noticed you’ve placed the components on the side facing the keyboard (not that it, probably, matters with surface mount components?). This will give you the minimum space in the cartridge slot - especially with a case around it! For once I actually planned ahead here and measured to make sure it'll...

SD Interface for Plus 1

Hi All, The question that most comes up when people ask me about the ElkSD64 is "does it work with a plus 1?". To which the answer is, of course, no. But it got me thinking about doing something that would fit a Plus 1, especially when I obtained one thanks to the excellent Mr Dave Hitchins, of this...

Re: Electron SD Interface & SW Ram Expansion

Good to hear it worked for you :) Little update: I'm now offering tracked shipping to the EU as some people have requested it. Also, I've been testing an ElkSD64 build of MMFS2 (which does away with the need for a beeb.mmb file) and will knock up something for download if there's interest in it. Obv...

Re: MMFS Version 2

No time to really test today, but trying to load Jet Set Willy and Elite on my Electron with an ElkSD64 I also get the 'not allowed' error using the ESWMMFS. The 'Haven' menu program crashes on both the SW and non-SW versions. Have to say, though, I really like dealing with individual disk images. I...

Re: The 8-Bit Guy's new 65816 based computer

I haven't studied the relevant documentation for some years, so I'm a bit hazy on the specifics, but my recollection of the regulations is that an assembled kit is legally no different from a pre-built product. If you're selling assembled kits they really should be CE compliant (with a few exception...

Re: The 8-Bit Guy's new 65816 based computer

Good point about licensing and compliance! If the final product is anything like the board shown in the video I have a feeling compliance issues may kill off any chance of it being sold as a fully assembled item in the EU. Stand-alone consumer devices can't be legally sold without the CE mark, and ...

Re: Electron SD Interface & SW Ram Expansion

I'll do a UEF as well, yes. The WAV file is included simply because it plays back on pretty much anything.

The updater will be posted at the weekend, I'll include the recovery files as well if by that point I'm happy there are no major bugs in it.

Re: The 8-Bit Guy's new 65816 based computer

His experiences with Planet X3 did seem to be a bit of a nightmare. I wouldn't have wanted to be under that kind of stress. The money required to put a large board full of through-hole parts into production is not trivial, though, so do I wonder where it'll come from if not Kickstarter. Even a small...

Re: The 8-Bit Guy's new 65816 based computer

Presumably it'll show up on Kickstarter; David Murray raised over $100,000 for Planet X3, so he should easily be able to get enough to put the board into production. The source for the video FPGA is an important factor, though. If the developer goes off in a huff (as so often happens on these kind o...

Re: The 8-Bit Guy's new 65816 based computer

I think the common factor for UK machines was the use of ULAs, and consequently the display logic had to be fairly simple. Whereas several of the US manufacturers had either their own ASIC production facilities or could afford to hire one. Commodore had access to their own chip fab, so they could ge...

Re: Electron SD Interface & SW Ram Expansion

I'm currently finishing work on the updater that will flash the main copy of MMFS, hopefully it should be available some time this week. It works, but I want to test it to death because of the potential for bricking the card if it goes wrong. There should also be, fairly soon-ish, a recovery utility...

Hi all,

I'm in need of an issue 6 Elk. Has to be working, but otherwise condition doesn't really matter - even a bare motherboard would be fine.

Many thanks!

Re: MMFS Development and Support

I've seen some very subtle / specific bugs that were caused by violated these rules. It turns out you were spot on, Dave. I enabled writing to the FPGA's block RAM and sideways MMFS runs perfectly from there, so the villain of the piece is indeed my handling of the SRAM. p.s. I fully understand CMc...
