That's fantastic - haven't seen this since my GCSE coursework 22yrs ago.

@danielj - page 173 looks helpful re. baud rates.

Re: Commstar II

So, I've finally got myself organised, and I'll be visiting the CCH later this month, on the weekend of the 23rd/24th. I've contacted the very helpful CCH people, and I'll be scanning the Commstar II manual, if it hasn't materialised by then, along with the L4FS network manager's guide. That’s fant...

Re: Maplin Electronics in administration

I've been popping in to quite a few picking up bits and pieces. But it seems it might be the end of the line, all my local ones are closed now, anyone noticed any still open? My local one in Essex has closed. Was in London this morning and popped into the Moorgate store. Loads of stock and the disc...

Found this - https://www.4corn.co.uk/archive/showpdfs/10%20Acorn%20User%20July%201887%20-%20Barbican/Pace%20Micro%20Technology%20-%20Commstar%20II.pdf - not the manual, and possibly you’ve already seen this, but it does look as though it contains some clues. I see that the CCH have Commstar II in t...

Commstar II

As you may have seen on 'Cheap wifi modem' thread, I've been using Commstar on my Master Compact to "dial in" to @John_Newcombe's excellent Telstar viewdata system, using @danielj's modem design. It works well, but I've found a few incompatibilities between Commstar and the Master Compact - it doesn...

*0# to get back to the main page :) hash being enter in commstar. d. Thanks for that. Realised that the problem was Commstar not mapping the keyboard correctly on my Master Compact. On the numerical keypad '#' displays an 's' and on the main keyboard Shift-3 generates a '£' sign. All working now I'...

Re: Hello fellow Acorn users

Welcome As someone who's also getting back into things after a few decades away I've found this forum, and especially the people on it, extremely helpful. For the same cost as a few beers and a bit of soldering I now have MicroSD storage on my Master Compact, hundreds of games, and can telnet into B...

Re: Maplin Electronics in administration

In normal business, they threw out stray leads and allsorts. Though take a look at this. I once rescued a broken videotape as I could easily have mended it to record on but forgot all about it. Many years on I mended it and played it, only to find myself doing a day's work. Especially now the place...

Re: Cheap web-modem for the beeb/master (and arc if ya like!)

Domino DIN plugs arrived and now have this working with flow control. Not sure what I’m doing wrong but I’m struggling to navigate Prestel once connected - doesn’t seem to respond to pressing # to return to the main menu, hitting enter works but then can’t find my way back from e.g. the news page. Re: Computer Shops From Back In The Day

Pretty sure my Dad bought our Atari ST from Tandy in Coventry. When the power supply went pop we had it fixed by JBC Micros - think they still exist, but have migrated to IT training and cloud computing services these days. Subsequent purchases of kit came from Evesham Micros, but I think our A3010 ...

Re: Maplin Electronics in administration

As you say, the mountains of HDMI and USB cables were so overpriced to begin with that 50% off is still higher than Amazon prices. Just back from my local store, and they are now 80% off, which brings them more in line with elsewhere. Indeed. Local store now entering its final week. Not much left, ...

Another satisfied customer, finally got around to soldering up the cable for my Master Compact. Means that in the space of a weekend I've added an RS232 serial port, Wifi modem and 1gb of SD Card storage to it - not bad for a 30yr old machine :D . Seems to work fine using *SRLOAD with MAMMFS 1.40. T...

d.
No, used Commstar 1.4 for Telstar. Commstar II seems to have viewdata and terminal as separate apps. Might give Communitel a try.

Re: Cheap web-modem for the beeb/master (and arc if ya like!)

Yes, that'd potentially do it as the beeb won't think it can send. d. That's sorted it. Must have a crack at the version with flow control at some point. Am using one of the eBay double-sided MAX3232 boards with level shifters, which I think might even fit inside a 5 pin DIN connector. IMG_5206.JPG...

No, you're probably nearly there. Which version of the firmware are you using? With or without the flow control? Depending on when you downloaded it, it may have had the flow control in by default, the current version has it disabled? d. Edit: More: Check you've set both send and receive to 2400bps...

OK, now have all the parts (I'm using a Wemos D1 mini board, having had good results with them before). Mixed results so far. The ESP8266 modem is working. Tried it out with my Psion 3a first of all and was able to connect to bat.org. Got Commstar onto an ADFS floppy via my Arc, and works with SRLOA...

It's a shame my Master Compact is lacks the serial upgrade to make use of this, but plan on building one for use with my Arc and Psion 3a. Re: Maplin Electronics in administration

Think it now depends what's in your local store. Popped into mine at the weekend and they've now moved all the stock to the front half of the store and started to sell the fixtures and fittings, so don't imagine it'll be open for more than a few weeks. All I picked up was a small d-sub enclosure and...

The A3010 has a serial port, why not just use SLIP and the sort of lashup I've got in my bbc WiFi modem thread? It should be straight forward to build esp8266 firmware to do the job, it's all in the libraries AFAIK? That way you don't need to build any new drivers for riscos... d. Definitely going ...

Re: Simultaneous internet & mass storage solutions for the A3010

I looked into this last year, and found ESP8266 "modems" being used to provide internet access to Atari STs and Amigas. Here's an example of what I mean: https://www.chzsoft.de/site/hardware/connecting-the-atari-st-to-the-internet/ I think the main problem is that there isn't a PPP TCP/IP stack avai...

So far, I've restricted my hobby to fixing/maintaining the gadgets I acquired as a teenager through the 90s, including my A3010 and BBC Master Compact, plus some 386 and pentium-era PC gear. Re: Maplin Electronics in administration

Popped into my local store again this weekend. Didn't look like they'd shifted that much stock to be honest. Picked up a big sheet of veroboard at 50% off and a 'lucky dip' bag of LED/LCD displays for just £2.50 - mostly 7 segment figure-8 LED displays, but also included a very nice 4x20 dot matrix ...
