Re: Arm 3 Upgrade..... what Socket do I need
Thought I'd add a question to this thread since it is sort of related. What is the best way to remove an ARM chip from the socket? I'm not very hardware familiar and don't want to break anything. I have two A310's, one with an ARM3 daughterboard and one with the regular ARM chip, which I want to swa...

Can I use a 44 Pin DOM on a 40 pin Acorn IDE?
I bought a 512Mb IDE DOM device, but didn't notice it was a 44 pin one until it arrived. Is there a way to adapt it to work on the 40 pin IDE interfaces in an Archimedes? (I have A3010 candidate machines for it, one with HCCS IDE and one with Castle IDE). Was thinking about buying a molex adapter/ex...

Re: Doom?
That Beeb palette version is surprisingly effective! Yet again I'm lamenting the fact that Acorn didn't give us half-bright RGBs with the other 8 colours.

Re: Doom?
This is awesome Rob. =D> Your dynamic palette idea sounds like an interesting challenge! It's quite a colourful game unfortunately (and colours in use vary depending on level locations) so 16-colours is a pretty tricky constraint. As has already been mentioned, there's a few well known ways to get f...

Re: Repairing a dead A310 power supply
For C1, 0.01uF is a 10nF. Both the same value, just using a different SI multiplier. For C2, if it physically fits, a 100nF (or 0.1uF) type will be fine. They are interference suppression capacitors, so the value is not critical. Both C1 and C2 must be X2 rated (for safety) as they are connected ac...

Re: Repairing a dead A310 power supply
Seems the caps on this board are very similar but not quite to the ones in Retroclinic's BBC cap repair kits.
C1 = X2 0.01uF (RC's are 10nF X2 RIFA)
C9 = 25V 470uF (RC's are 35V 220uF)
C2 = ??? (the popped one has burned so no idea what it is apart from some type of RIFA) (RC's are 100nF X2 RIFA)

Re: Repairing a dead A310 power supply
Ok. I decided to get gnarly with it. It pops out if you encourage it upwards with a screwdriver.
Right so now I can see the PCB. There are loads of caps! But which ones will be borked or nearly borked?

Does anyone know how I get the black grommet loosened? I can't get the PCB out unless I can remove it.

Re: Question About Graphics Modes
Probably because 8 colours is 3-bits per pixel and in an 8-bit, byte based machine that's a pain to work with - much easier to blob pixels into bit quantities of 1, 2 or 4 that pack neatly into 8-bit bytes.

Re: A5000 but no display..."Out of Range"
While the machine is stripped it could be a good idea to replace the PSU fan with a silent type. It will make using the computer much nicer. This will involve opening the PSU and soldering wires together though. This sounds interesting - could you advise a suitable replacement fan? Would that same ...
