Re: MAGIC SMOKE

Well just consider our social progress, Just a few short years back, magic smoke from an ancient computer made a user say 'Well it's definitely going in the landfill then.'

Everyone seems to know to put them on Ebay without even plugging them in now.

That is long for just a few notes. That is Commodore BASIC level, though I honestly don't want to sound as maligning as I do! :D

Or perhaps try a Shepard tone - you think the tones glide up to the top or down to the bottom but they never get there.

Something like this?

10 ENVELOPE 1,1, 1,-1,0, 2,2,0, 27,0,-1,-1,110,0
20 SOUND 2,0,0,2
30 FOR I%=1 TO 4
40 READ P%
50 IF I%=4 D%=15 ELSE D%=5
60 SOUND 3,1,P%,D%
70 SOUND 2,1,P%,D%
80 NEXT
90 DATA 177,161,141,149
Ah, that's magnificent! I think I'll sample a scale of that!

LGR reviewed the Electron version and found that while Repton built on Boulder Dash, it was too 'evil' to sustain much enthusiasm long term: https://archive.org/details/youtube-IGpwVa9Rgs

There's also *MIDI at MDFS. You can use this to redirect SOUND commands to a MIDI interface if you have one.
Interesting work. Now is there a program for BBC BASIC For Windows to play SOUND and ENVELOPES as MIDI output through Windows??

Maybe this half-counts, but tonight's episode of BACK IN TIME FOR SCHOOL saw today's kids use the BBC in an 80s environment: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0002jvr/back-in-time-for-school-series-1-episode-6 It's on Iplayer a while. A truly masterful bit of work from the old pioneer days, equally mindblowing and a reminder just how we've come in my eyes.

I bet that's just crying out for a MIDI card, if there was enough processing capability to handle it.

The irony is that the Amiga was the quantum leap, with the Archimedes following after.

Pity that all the techie mistakes (and flights of fancy) of Acorn and Sinclair kneecapped both companies when real computing was ready to roll.

Interestingly, there was a recent topic on Lemon covering the essential facts of that matter here: https://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=70345

It should have been 'stickied', to always stay at the top of the pile.

Maybe so, though watch for the quality. Repros often aren't the full shilling. These camera films and cassettes are on sale in my local Pound shop, with more upmarket Maxells at Clas Olsen along with floppies of the same standing. But all is not what it was I hear. Still, they're better than a kick ...

Well we can close the book on that mystery. Thanks very much for looking into it. Vintag.es could at least have credited that link for us. Nice Amigary flavour, taking another look. Oh to go back in time with a copy and post it in to one of those game making competitions. (The actual author of course. I sometimes feel I'm stumped beyond 10 CLS nowadays.)

As we said in education, that ain't not bad !! :)

I'm not sure it will be finished if that demo was 2011. Nice to see the BBC put through some sweet graphical paces again.

How much room did Curry have to wield his low cunning? He couldn't have had much room to do a Tramiel, as on top of Curry not having a monopoly on current technology, there seemed a more cut-throat killer dog mentality in American high business all these years. Or perhaps that's just the telly and f...

For my money, the C64 already did it. Call me biased anyway but ut had the coolest screen of the contemporary micros. It was colourful, easy on the eye, rich and with the right serif for that setting.

Re: Bit of fun - One change only

There was a MIDI interface for the BBC which plugged straight in. As there was for the 64, Amiga and many others. But MIDI was rolling out roughly 18 months after the BBC was designed and I suppose it was unclear how much anything like that would be used when it was out. Only the Atari ST had integr...

Re: Why was Repton so loved by BBC users yet so disliked by the Commies?

That thought crossed my mind about the poor Elk. It was supposed to be the 'games' BBC but cut back on what resources the BBC already struggled with to compete as a gaming micro. It was supposed to be Acorn's Spectrum. Though while the Spectrum was also a hobbyist computer now used for games, it was...
