Re: Epson HX20 - first laptop !EVER! 1981+

On the 16K expansion board; I believe this document is the installation guide for the board. It also provides an explanation why the option ROM does not work with the card installed. Regrettably the instruction on how to enable it (write 8 @ &FFF5) does not have any effect on my configuration.

Re: Epson HX20 - first laptop !EVER! 1981+

Thanks very much for that information! With the documentation that Martin published here I learned that the MX-20 has capacitors that need replacing. That could explain intermittent errors I get with the expansion rom the 16K RAM board needs initialisation before the memory can be accessed Martin ha...

Today I received a USB-Serial converter but discovered that the Trap! issue was caused by the 16K internal expansion card my HX-20 was fitted with. With the expansion card removed the flashx20 works fine :D The disk basic loads when starting basic, the remote screen works and loading files works. As...

You could boot in ADFS: switch on and press break (not ctrl-break). That should get you a * prompt in ADFS. Then go to the DOS directory: *DIR DOS And rename DRIVE_C to DRIVE_D *RENAME DRIVE_C DRIVE_D You can then setup a new bootable partition and access your original files on drive D:\ Out of curi...

so Paul, is this lead wired correctly? I never made it, so should be the original that came with it. Never tried linking to any of my old PCs or laptops, This seems to be a serial cable to connect to the RS-232C interface of the HX-20. The cable needed for the FLASHX20 disk/screen emulator is for t...

Hello Col, Further to ongoing discussion, have you seen mention of the FLASHX20 system. Try http://members.aon.at/nkehrer/ This looks very interesting, to attach a PC to your HX and, via the facilities of the PC, provide floppy disks (as per the TF-20) and full monitor access (via a sort of display...

Regarding the BOMBER game for the HX-20 - I am still in pursuit of this, trying to find the game, and I have a note that there are folks here who would like the game. I now know that there are two versions of BOMBER, quite different. There is a version written by William Smith, for Epson, and this ...

Re: BBC B long beep and (mostly) unresponsive keyboard

As Kazzy suggested it is most likely related to the system VIA and related circuits. You will see similar symptoms if you completely remove IC3. Tricky’s test rom does more than test memory, it also checks the system VIA by controlling the caps and shift lock leds and producing sound. Both should oc...

Thanks for that, Col. Somehow my HX-20 does not seem to read ROM4. If I put the skiwriter rom in socket 12E it does show up in the menu.

One detail; it has a 16K internal expansion.

It does ask to go into Basic first if you don't See pics here near start of this thread, to show what you should get : https://stardot.org.uk/...

Knowing the possible wreckage caused by the high voltage psu I’d suggest to start with the basics; check for 5V supply on the IC’s on the main board and check if the CPU gets a clock signal (does it have a pulse?).

What test equipment do you have? Mutimeter, Logic Probe, Logic Analyser, scope? If you say you may have used an unsuitable PSU before. Do you remember if it was wrong polarity or voltage?

Tricky's test rom may help in diagnosing 6522 and memory issues, have a read here.

The RF signal can be a pain to find. You can do a simple video mod to change the output of the RF socket to composite video. See here: https://stardot.org.uk/forums/viewtopi ... 72#p232713

the caps lock and num lock lights turn on and off when pressed.
Are you saying the caps lock can be toggled using the caps lock key?

Is there a cooling fan installed and does it run?

What happens if you wait a few seconds after switching on, then press F12 and then press Copy (or ctrl-g)?
