Re: 64K to 128K upgrade

Please ignore my post above, I hadn't set things up correctly. User error once again! Edited to say, I do have a question though. Why fold all the #1 & #27 pins up if you are to solder them all together? Surely it's easier to just fold up the bottom device's pins? Yes, it is. You only need to do th...

Re: Copy BBC disk to PC using Smart SPI

You can also download the MMFS rom for the Master and run that from sideways ram. MMFS is an alternative file system for the same interface. Use *MMFS to use, it will work instead of Smart SPI. The tools disk (image) included with mmfs includes a tool called imtod that dumps the disk image to the ph...

Re: RiscOS Hard disk formats

Assuming you used dd to image the drive you can access the image directly in Arculator (afer renaming it to HD4.HDF (iirc). From there you can copy the files to another image file and use the resulting image to write it back to the original drive.

Re: RiscOS Hard disk formats

I believe the suggestion is to get a second hard disc and copy the files one by one instead of making a full image.

Alternatively you could create an empty hard disc image file and do the file copying in an emulator.

Re: A310 restoration

Wow, that’s a stroke of calculated luck!

Apart from the obvious “it is the right thing to do” is there any other compelling reason not to leave IC7 piggy backed (soldered on)?

Given the work (and risk) of replacement it sounds to me as a fair consideration?

I would expect an IDEFSDiscs entry. But the format application on the utilities disc you downloaded should also have an option to add drives.

Re: hi purchased an a3000 ide drive and need help

Most importantly you’ll need an ADFS formatted IDE drive or CF card.

ADFS formatting can be done with the utilities disk that should have come with the interface or by dumping an ADFS hard disk image directly to the drive / CF card.

Re: hi purchased an a3000 ide drive and need help

You will first need to format a card, so not so much a driver as a formatter. As said Arc IDE interfaces are generally quite fussy with CF cards, you may need to try a few. If you have a non-china (real) SanDisk of 4GB or less, that would be great. Do you have access to a linux machine that can read...

A cable modification would work, but I’d prefer to put a switch on the DS jumpers on the drives (assuming the 3.5” has those).

An Aster CT-80. A TRS-80 compatible computer. The choice of the Dutch government for a school computer. Many schools in the Netherlands had these computers to use in their IT classes in the eighties. I remember these classes as terminally boring. I was lucky to have a BBC micro at home. I guess some...

Re: A310 restoration

This is one of the most common faults for the A310. See here for more information: https://www.retro-kit.co.uk/page.cfm/co ... ouplingcap

If the other A310 does boot it is probaly still a good idea to replace this tantalum cap (C37).

Re: Another BBC B Needs Fixing.

If the idea is to fix the BBC, I'd recommend replacing IC64; the mode 7 screens very consistently show an issue with bit 3.

That said, it would be good to know why the memory test does not confirm this.

Re: Another BBC B Needs Fixing.

These short memory test programs are often non-conclusive.

A mode 7 screen is a more thorough test. In your case IC64 (bit 3 in CAS0) sometimes fails, but not always.

The best check is a mode 0 screen.

Re: BBC B+ fault

I agree with Kazzie that this is most probably caused by a faulty IC55. Sometimes the first bit (bit 0) is high when it should be low and vice versa.

The way it behaves it could well work if you piggyback a working memory chip on it (but you can never really tell).

Re: my beeb just pegged it :(

Well done! =D> For the other BBC, rather than unsoldering and replacing all the CAS0 RAM, you could find out which specific chip is faulty by either fixing up an inverter on the S25 so that CAS0 and CAS1 are swapped around or burn Tricky’s test rom in an eprom and replace the OS chip with that to di...

Re: Non bootong BBC/B Issue 7 - Continuous beep

I’d say this makes IC62 the prime suspect.

Bit 1 seems to be pulled high, making an A show as a C and space as a “. As this is CAS0 (using the inverter), bit 1 is stored in IC62.
