Nah, I was the spotty kid with the faded tee shirt hacking hand assembled code on a ZX81 while my best friend (who I was very envious of) turned out wonderful, flicker free, colourful, musical and fast programs on his Model B.

He had several very nice jumpers.
Lesson to be learned there!!

Re: Haunted Beebs on TV: The Vertical Plane / Out Of This World

I bought the book after it got mentioned on the speccy forum. The book got reprinted just this year, well worth a read actually. It's weird in that it's very entertaining, breezy, lightly written book, with weird stuff as part of it. It's not like a ZOMG super natural book, with serious over tones. ...

Hopefully, it won't make running hobbyist sites into more trouble than it's worth, and then end up driving more people on horrible places like facecrook.

Quite, a lot of what I have read, talks in terms of employees and numbers of employees etc, but very little if actually done as a hobby for free.

Re: Scanning manuals.

In the past I just scan them, and save them as PNGs, at the default size (usually huge, a bigger resolution that the page), and keep those as your base scans. Then you can just tinker about with a copied set for PDFs, OCR etc.

Re: How do you read the values on SMD Capacitors?

*wave hot soldering iron about arl ower* Made a big list of caps, took loads of photos and started de-soldering. Sadly some of the caps had leaked badly, and damaged some of the solder pads. Two caps dropped off when touched, and the pads had been eaten away. I might have to run wires or something. ...

Re: How do you read the values on SMD Capacitors?

Cheers, I was hoping to do just by visual inspection. I'll start off by listing all the caps with pcb number on the board, then go from there. I have lots of caps left over from when I did the x68000, so I'm hoping they will be suitable :)

Re: How do you read the values on SMD Capacitors?

You do get some info on them, on the photo, it's the silver and black topped thingys, so C201 on the board is 100 6A 18A.

How do you read the values on SMD Capacitors?

I've successfully replaced the all the can shaped(?) type Capacitors on a Sharp X68000, but I'm moving onto my next project. A PC Engine Duo which uses a lot of SMD capacitors, how do you read the values on these? I'll be replacing them with normal can types. http://www.zen70509.zen.co.uk/duo/DSC_06...

Re: Viewdata Service

I downloaded a terminal program for the speccy via viewdata. You had to watch it in real time, it would slowly fill the screen up with "junk" per page, and keep going so like page 1/15 then 2/15 etc Once it got to the end, you were prompted to save it to tape. I can't remember much about that bit. I...

Re: Viewdata Service

I think I would of been on it, mid 90s, I still have the letters somewhere. It had kind of been left alone even then. You wrote and got a demo time limited account, and were meant to pay a sub once it ran out, but the demo account just kept going.

I agree! I had an old ibook G4, that recently I dug out to remove the SSD IDE drive to use in something else, already the plastics had degraded, and were brittle/broken in places. They are rubbish inside, not to mention the use of glue arl ower.
