Re: A5000 woes

With something like this problematic VY86C020, do you ever find yourself needing to actually desolder the chip, touch up the pads, then solder it down again, or is it pretty much always sufficient to just apply flux and heat without actually removing the chip? Solder, over time, changes its structu...

Re: Battery backup !!!

I suppose the saving grace here is that the cells are in what look like a 'container' that would hold all the goo!

My main concern is if anyone using that battery pack were to put the computer away for any length of time! Upside down . . . <shudder>

Quick question about a suitable 3.5" disk drive for the Slogger Pegasus board. I'm intending to use the drive extracted from a dead RiscPC. Will that work?
Got your answer OK - But - No such thing as a "dead RicPC" It's just hibernating  Like all the 'dead' Electrons . . .

Battery backup !!!

I'm worried about this eBay sale item:

Apart from being a give-away price - why would you want to put a Zinc battery anywhere near your computer?

Re: A5000 woes

One thing to remember, with flux . . . it needs 'activating'! - I find, with stubborn joints: apply the flux and heat, allowing it do its job. Then apply soldering iron. This also helps to reduce thermal shock to the part being worked on.

I also liked a previous suggestion on here that applies to any computers containing batteries... storing them upside down long term might be beneficial so that if they leak it's less likely the board would be damaged since gravity would instead direct the nastiness towards the underside of the top ...

Re: Storing & Protecting hardware

If you nip down to your local Wilco's or similar store, you can pick-up some of those plastic storage bags that you can Vacuum Seal. Before doing that, as Mark has suggested, put some bags of silica gel in there. These can be bought via eBay. Then follow Mark's other instructions. Or, just send them...

Re: A5000 woes

Managed to get rid of quite a bit of verdigris, at least. Looks like quite a few address lines are disconnected, although the ARM3 is running — I see A3 and LA3 toggling; next step is to try reflowing the pins on the ARM3 to see if that brings any more back to life. Lots and lots of flux and a hot ...

It's usually the case that faulty keys just have dirty contacts, and can be cleaned by repeated pressing of the problematic key for a few minutes. If that doesn't work, this page has some guidance on where to go next. I've made a few 'short' videos of how to remove and clean Electron keys (the clea...

I should think so, I'll get all the books out I'm bringing at the weekend, and give you a rough idea of how many there are. If need be, we can always just put them on the table a few at a time and rotate them as the day goes on. There'll be a few tables with a 'spare' corner for books, I'm sure . ....

Finally happened across a box of these on eBay which were sold as unused. They look to be in pretty good condition so it may be the case.

Even got the box. 8)
