Not strictly a beeb, but I was quite surprised to see two Microvitec Cub monitors in the recent "Chernobyl" TV series

Re: Arthur Desktop Apps

Not a commercial application, but PiRat seems to use the Arthur desktop conventions, I've uploaded here: https://stardot.org.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=17174&p=248333#p248333 The date is shortly after RISC OS 2 was released and the version I've uploaded appears to have been packaged as a RISC O...

Arthur Desktop Apps

Hi all, Anyone know if there were many desktop applications written for Acorn's Arthur OS? I'm quite curious about this brief period of Archimedes history, as I didn't get my first Arc (410/1) until 1990, when everything was written for RISC OS 2. I found a couple of programs in my own collection th...

Re: Creating Disk Images on a BBC Master

Thanks - I have a userport SD card interface, but it came with Smart SPI ROM, rather than MMFS - not sure which is better. I could copy data to a virtual disk on the SD card as you describe, but presumably that would just be a case of copying the files across individually, rather than direct transfe...

Creating Disk Images on a BBC Master

I have a Master 128 with dual 5.25 and 3.5 floppy drives, and lots of disks from the 80's! Would it be possible to insert a DFS disk into one drive, image it, and save the resulting dsd or ssd image as a single file onto an ADFS disk inserted in the second drive? If so, what software do I need? Than...

Re: Arthur under emulators

You need to slide the Next slot to just over 800K, so it can allocate enough memory to read the floppy. Thanks - that worked perfectly. If a game has been copy protected, will this always be preserved in the ADF (ADFS) format, or is JFD required? I ask because a small number of games I've converted...

Re: Arthur under emulators

I did add several "save as" routines to ADFFS in recent builds, but can't for the life of me recall if I added an ADF option. It's possible to code one in BASIC easy enough if I didn't: Thanks for the code. It gives the error "No room for this DIM at line 20" under RO 3.1. What did I miss? I had a ...

Re: Arthur under emulators

A couple of months ago I compiled what was then the latest Arculator, but I could only get JFDs to work when emulating a machine with the newer FDC (SuperIO). Is this correct? Obviously this would preclude using JFDs under Arthur - unfortunate as I was hoping to recreate the retro experience of runn...

Re: Smart SPI and less smart user

I've also just bought one of the SmartSPI devices, which I'm using with my Master 128. Most games work fine, but like the OP, I have found that some don't run, presumably because the SPI filing system is taking up memory which they also require? I've also added some of my own disk images using the M...

Re: Arculator & Risc OS 2.0

On Arculator 0.99, if you put the RISC OS 2 ROMs in the RISCOS3 folder and select "RISC OS 3 (old FDC)' the emulated hard disc seems to work fine; it uses the IDEFS module included with the emulator. Try this at your own risk, of course.

Re: Master 128 vs Master Compact?

I tried this ages ago and never got it to run properly. I think the 2nd ADFS drive on my datacentre still has everything, so I'll have a look if I have time. Still no luck with the arrow keys here, but I've implemented a crude hack to get my old AMX Mouse working by adding the following lines to $....

Re: Master 128 vs Master Compact?

Is there any reason why the 'arrow pointer' on the Master Compact Welcome Disk's menu screen should fail to work when loaded on a Master 128?
On my M128, the pointer flickers when the arrow keys are pressed, but refuses to move :)

Re: Master 128 Battery Mod

Dunno if anyone else has done this, but its a simple mod to replace the 3xAA battery pack in a master 128 with a CR2032 lithium cell. Holders are available on ebay for pennies. I fitted one to my Master 128 last week (plus the required diode and resistor, of course). It's working well so far - good...

Re: Faulty Electron...

Thanks for the response guys. It was indeed the ULA - I removed it again to recheck the socket (which is apparently called a '68-Pin Textool 268-5400' socket) and discovered that one of its gold contact pins had broken completely off. Unfortunately the break point was very close to the PCB, so solde...

Faulty Electron...

I have an Acorn Electron with issue 4 motherboard, which I rescued from my aunt's dustbin in 1989(!). I fired it up a couple of days ago for the first time in ages. Everything worked correctly except the tape relay, which failed to engage when loading or saving from/to tape. I opened the case and ga...

Re: Parts for Master 128

If you have a meter, connect it either side of diode D20 (one meter lead to each diode lead). The diode is near the relay. When you try to load or save from / to tape, your meter should show 5V dc approx. If it does not, transistor Q14 (type BC239) may be faulty or there is a problem with the contr...

Re: Parts for Master 128

Thanks for the reply. I chose the best match of components based on available info. The new crystal and battery pack both seem to be working fine, but the new tape relay just sits there and does nothing when it's supposed to engage - never mind :) By coincidence the tape relay on my Electron has sto...

Parts for Master 128

Hi folks. I'm attempting to revive a BBC Master 128, but some internal components are missing. I downloaded the Master Service Manual, but would appreciate some more detailed info on component specs before ordering & installing them. The missing items are: RL1 - tape relay: Service manual says: "RLY...

Reviving an Integrex ColourJet 132 printer

I still have a working Integrex Colourjet 132 (aka Canon PJ-1080A) printer from the late 1980s (and a supply of ink), which I'd like to start using again. This printer was very common in UK schools during the Acorn Archimedes era. I noticed that the RISC OS driver is still included with the latest R...

ST-506 emulation would certainly be cool, even allowing hard disc access under Arthur as you say.
Looking forward to v1.0 now.

Arculator - hard disc image access under RISC OS 2

I've been playing with the excellent Arculator emulator (v0.99 for Windows). For no particular reason, I'd like to access an IDE hard disc image under RISC OS 2. Tom has included an emulated IDE podule (RISC Developments' IDE Interface 1.24) which allows an emulated machine with old FDC to access a ...

BBC tape & disk copy protection - newbie questions

Hi, I've been using MakeUEF "Amateur" with default settings to transfer BBC tapes (mostly educational programs) which don't yet seem to be archived online. Most work fine, but the tapes from Ebury and Griffin Software fail to transfer - when transcoding the recorded WAVs to UEF only some of the file...
