OK - the majority of people who opined went for option 1, so things will stay as they are - those who don't want to see the edit messages (it doesn't mean anything's substantively changed, it's probably just fixing of typos or the like!) - as above, in your control panel there's a "style" you can se...

Soldered. If you ever remove a chip, and there's space, always stick in a socket - it makes life easier in the future if it goes pop again :)

The only reason to change any caps in the atom is if the video is looking a bit shonky. Or it's broken and a capacitor is the root of the problem :D I will dispel this myth that all old computers must be recapped... :D I think it's put about by people who want to make a quick buck much like roofers ...

I had sticky pads and the lid seemed a better place for it to be louder? I bloody hate hot glue. Sticky pads are a bit less permanent. It was simply an arbitrary decision. Don't read anything into it.

For drag soldering I use one that's the BC shape from hakko - I'm sure there's equivalent for your iron: https://www.hakko.com/english/tip_selec ... _bc_c.html

Re: Today I received.....

Check the voltages coming out of the PSU. And the fuse in the plug. :) don't fret the mains stuff, just don't touch it whilst it's on, and use a screwdriver with a nice rubber handle to discharge the mains caps after you turn it off...

Re: Monitors

How exactly are those cables wired? I don't know of any VGA monitors that will accept a composite signal on their inputs, especially not one with a horizontal frequency of 15KHz like the beeb puts out? You need something to actually electrically convert the signal from composite to VGA, e.g.: https:...

Re: Open source firmware for Gotek floppy emulator released

Yeah, they're a bit quiet- you can up the volume in the ff.cfg. In so far as the USB configuration, there's very little to know - just drop ssd/dsd/adf files onto the usb stick, and ensure the line host = acorn is in the ff.cfg file :) You can arrange by directory or however you like, and use a FAT ...

Yup - you need to use https on those - it's not going to like mixing insecure scripts with secure web pages. Stardot is enforcing https now as it means you can't send your password in plain text, which means that it's less likely to get intercepted and therefore less likely that your personal inform...

Re: Wanted: Acorn machine

The cheapest option is probably the Electron "Elk", and can have most of the beeb add-ons, but I don't really know much about it or the Archimedes range. The elk is "BBC Like" but it really is its own machine - with expansions it can do many similar things, but the hardware is fundamentally differe...

Re: Cumana Dual 5 1/4 floppy drive

There's a metal plate attached to the drive head by a small piece of foam. The foam deteriorates and the head cover falls off and jams the mechanism. The covers add weight to the heads and it will perform better with them in place. You'll need to work out a replacement for the foam and re-fix ideally.
