Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

No, I don't think using the cassette version would help. On a BBC, when transferring from tape to disc, the problem is that the area of memory between &E00 and &1900 (typically) is free on a tape-based system whereas on a disc based system it is not. So there is often a problem with multi lo...

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

Perhaps you have discovered why nobody has patched Hypersports for the M128 yet  Well, I have now... it turns out I have made a fundamental error in one of my assumptions, so the approach I have taken doesn't work. The HAZEL area is used as the disc workspace (this is why PAGE=&E00 on the ...

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

Yes I hope that will fix Jet Boat. Regarding Hyper Sports, I have done some more thinking. Owing to its multi-load nature, I don't think it is possible to load the game into memory, patch it and then run it. Instead I think I will have to create a Compact-specific disc, a Master-specific disc and a ...

Re: Have you ever thought a "Design Idea/Feature" was Utterly Stupid?

+1 for leaf blowers. I hate them. Their only benefit is for chainsaw manufacturers, by increasing sales. Two autumns ago, back when working in an office, my team watched from an upper floor as the site maintenance people walked round and round with leaf blowers making a deafening noise as they chase...

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

Do you have (a link to) a brief explanation of that technique? No, but if I manage to do it I will certainly explain here. In essence though, on the Master the bottom 8k of the OS rom (&C000-&DFFF) can be overlaid with a block of RAM known as HAZEL. In order to allow this to work without br...

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

Aha! Probing a bit further into Hypersports I have found that (all?) the problems are actually in the file DATA1, which is not data but in fact code. This accesses all sorts of locations in the VDU driver tables, and so it looks like it will be necessary to overlay the bottom 8k of the OS with OS1.2...

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

Well, as I said before your effort in checking all those games is more time consuming than fixing them! As for Hypersports, I have been poking around in its inner workings and have not figured out what the problem is. All I know is that it lies somewhere in the file CODE1. In fact if you type *CODE1...

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

Regarding Jet Boat, having read the other thread, the general problem is that because the game constantly reads the joystick (whether you have selected joystick control or not) it is at the mercy of whatever random data may be coming from the analogue port if you don't have a joystick connected. The...

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

Yay - fixed Match Day. There was a JSR that I had not spotted.

Never having played it before, I didn't realise that this was another Chris Roberts game. The similarity of the sprites to Strykers Run is quite noticeable!

I have actually tested this one - it works on B/B+/M/C:

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

I have been working on Match Day and I thought I had got it sorted... but it still doesn't work! Very annoying. It is doing lots of things with the VDU variables and interacting with locations in the &Cxxx and &Exxx areas. The &Exxx addresses have changed and so I have fixed those. The &...

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

I remember reading (probably on here) that the only problem with Match Day was that it directly called the OS 1.2 screen clearing routine and that's what stopped it working on a M128. So, it might just be a case of plugging in the equivalent location for MOS 5.1 or issuing a VDU 12? I'll need to lo...

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

Nice one! I have disassembled Match Day's MMODE file and I can see it heavily references locations in the Master's OS. No idea what it actually does, but that doesn't matter - I just need to translate these addresses to the Compact versions. In the absence of an OS disassembly for the Compact this m...

Re: Stryker's Run and the Machinegun

I'm not sure specifically about that point, but the Electron version certainly lacks many of the features of the BBC (and certainly Master) versions so I can imagine it's the easiest of the three. I might even have completed it myself too, can't remember!

Re: Flicker-free Elite on the Acorn Electron

Having read your explanation and thought about it a bit, I realise that your flicker-free algorithm is unrelated to the issue of slow line plotting on the Electron. The latter is done at a low level in LOIN, as you know, and the problem is that Electron cannot create a 256-pixel wide mode. It is stu...

I took a break from Match Day to have a go at Jet Boot Jack. Correcting the INKEY detection was all that was needed - but it was spread across two files this time.

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

I think Match Day fails because of something written in the "MMODE" file - in machine code that is. I'll need to disassemble it, some other day!

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

JCB Digger was quite easy - as you say, it is checking for a BBC micro Model B and rejects anything else. I have changed it so that it now detects specifically an Electron and ends if one is detected. Everything else seems to be OK - it certainly runs on the Compact.

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

OK, I have fixed Kissin' Kousins properly. The KLOAD file had multiple INKEY(-256)s in it. Making all of them also test for the Compact allows everything to work properly. Here's the SSD file. I'll take look at Knight Lore now because I think we've probably created a "Compact only" version...

For Knight Lore, try (additionally)

Code: Select all

1180LDA#&9E:STA&7F0:STA&2256:LDA#&F1:STA&7F1:STA&2257
I think the routine is at &F19E, so the above should fix it.

Re: Master Compact: A World in Pixels

I know why Knight Lore doesn't work. Having identified a Master, it then pokes the value &F0F5 into two places, because that is the location of the "*FX19" command on a Master 128. Doing CALL &F0F5 on a Master 128 returns immediately as you'd expect. Doing the same thing on a Compa...
