Re: Electron Elite query

Fractionally off topic here but what happens if you try the MasterCompact (ADFS Based by default) version of Elite on the Elk ? I'm only picking this one up as ( a ) The M128C version is ADFS and ( b ) If I remember correctly (not seen one for years) the plus expansion for the ELK only really initia...

all machines need Advanced Disc Toolkit ROM, great for comparing files /check memory locations / moving stuff down to &E00 8) I was going to mention that but I was slightly confused by the versioning of it, I can't remember off hand (can't check now) if its a v1.x for the Electron and 'B and v2.x f...

Re: Can't access disc drive

Unlikely but one problem I had with a certain type of kit was the 'links' provided would not seat or stay/place nice in the IC sockets. In the end I got that annoyed I soldered links over the IC pins instead (component side so it was visible to the unwary!) As I say I don't think that's your issue h...

Re: Whitehall game (BBC BASIC)

These kind of games are quite fun a bit like 'Millionaire' and there's another one or two if I remember correctly too. I first found those on another platform them realised they were also available on the 'B as well. Millionaire was a bit too tricky but as it was Basic it was not outside my scope to...

Its quite interesting :) :) Best I found to set a lowish number of seeds, say 2 to 8. Setting a high number makes an interesting symmetry type pattern though: 100 Seeds - Yes I know, sorry) 100s.png 5 Seeds - After a few seconds running 5s_1.png 5 Seeds - After a couple of minutes running 5s_2.png =D>

Re: Bit of fun - One change only

I think with the B opposed to the A at least, it was a trying perhaps to be a case of "all things to all men" (not sexist, just a phrase) :) I did actually sort of agree with the Atari type 9pin stick socket but then again I'd guess there was some kind of (Watford perhaps?) 'adaptor' to permit said ...

Re: Add switch to dual drives to allow booting from either/or?

You may be thinking of the mod that some people do for Spectrum +3 external drives which just grounds out a pin causing the drive select to be overridden instead of properly swapping lines? That shorts the output of a 74HCT04 inside the machine. I cannot recall exactly why. I know with my '...

Re: Add switch to dual drives to allow booting from either/or?

I have to say I prefer the DS mod where it is possible even though it can be a bit of a "£$"£$"£ with some of the modern 3.5"s to do it, over and above the cable swap method. There was something I read why you should not do the cable method but it is highly possible this was not Acorn related and ma...

Re: Add switch to dual drives to allow booting from either/or?

Hi Andy, the 3.5" drive is currently drive 0. To be fair, I'd probably add a Gotech unit in place of the 5.25" simply because I struggle to find media for it that actually work reliably (old disks are fine but have been copied to 3.5 now). :) Greets. That does make some sense. I no longer have a wo...

Re: Add switch to dual drives to allow booting from either/or?

I'd assume here that it would just be a case of a DPDT switch to move the 'DS' between each drive to do this, the same way you'd have to manually mod a modern (ish) PC 3.5 DS link to make it work as DS0 (where possible) although before anyone else replies with more info to hand it *might* be slightl...

I could be wrong but I have a vague recollection of seeing a W.E advert for a 'Master Rom' , it was if (again not sure!) a controller ROM to allow you to enable/disable other roms on a 'B , a bit like an *UNPLUG effect I suppose amongst some other features. Re: Watford Electronics Diagnostic Disc question

Random access test is usually (afaik) just to check it can get the drive to "move to track x" without it hanging. I'm not sure it would attempt to read the content of a specific sector as it would have to either have a pre-patterned disk (possible I suppose if its made it with its test) or know what...

This thread has gone rather off topic.

When I get time, unless there are any objections, I’ll split the discussion about computers in schools into it’s own thread.

In a recently posted PDF, in an interview with Kenneth Baker, it was said that the government would pay half the price of one computer if schools could pay the rest - so long as they didn't already have one: I do recall our Primary's was our first machine, I can remember well the wheeled trolley it...

Would those changes have pushed the prices up? Schools needed enough cash incentive to splash out on a BBC as it was. I can just about (if I'm correct, I was not very old then!) some kind of fund raising to get a BBC in the first place at our primary, or perhaps it was some extra monies as I think ...

Would one of the disc based memory testers be worth running perhaps ?

I'm thinking here the OS may not have a "16K" string in it to display that, despite it possibly thinking it, so it may not be able to say lower than 64K ?

As mentioned previously what happens (and what value is displayed) if you enter:

I suppose you could try a few of the other ones but that one would likely be the one of most immediate interest.

I like that. :)

Suggestions:

1. Offer an option to disable sound maybe ? I simply REM'ed out line 345 to silence it!
2. Perhaps a random choice of colours could be picked and cycled after x minutes ? Or maybe during 'draw' itself perhaps.

Its very good though all in all.

Perhaps this ought to go into the 'short type ins' topic ? I did contemplate this, but I wasn't sure it was short enough. Before I even looked at the listing (when I read the topic title) I'd assumed it was going to either be random placement/removal of asterisks in Mode2 or Mode7 or perhaps a few UDG's (user defined graphics) of the same in a graphics mode.

I was very pleasantly surprised by what I found instead. =D>

I concur with the above and its good to know you did at least get one file to load which is a positive sign. You say you're not getting the relay click ? Can you try a *M.1 command ?
