Retro Gamer mag #188 with Kevin Edwards

Retro Gamer magazine 188 has an interview with Acorn assembly language (and beyond) game coding hero Kevin Edwards.

Just an FYI !

Re: vidc1 256 colours - custom palette ?

Thanks, I'd seen that thread before but the voodoo over subselecting colour bits is still not clear to me.

I guess I am looking for a recipe where red in the dominant choice, followed by blue then by green...

vidc1 256 colours - custom palette ?

Hello archie people, I know that the early Archimedes machines have major restrictions on selecting a 256 colour selection from the 4096 available choices. I would like to see a palette which has a better (larger) selection of salmon skin tones / olive skin tones. Could you help outline what specifi...

Re: Mijas C and Brasscourt C

Yeah, Mijas C (from the old magazine reviews) seems to be pretty good, and compiled into actual 6502 code, instead of an intermediate interpreted language.

Mijas C and Brasscourt C

Hello beebers, Does anyone have disc/rom/manual images for either Brasscourt C compiler, or for Mijas C ? I know there are other C compilers out there, but it is these two specifically that I am interested in. As far as I know, there were three revisions of Mijas C for the BBC, with the latest versi...

Re: BeebEm video capture problem with playback

I presume you have a Win10 computer. This is a current incompatibility with BeebEm. There are numerous branches and backlogged fixes from various people that have not yet been centralised into an "official" new release of that emulator. As far as I recall, someone here has a working fix for this (ma...

Re: Prince of Persia

FYI the title screen says (C) 1990 Jordan Mechner. The original was actually copyrighted in 1989 for the Apple 2. ( You might have taken the title screen from one of the later conversions i.e. Amstrad CPC )

Just nitpicking, but it irked me for some reason! :o

Great work so far.

Re: New Disk Image Editor

This looks very promising! I was thinking recently (since I'm archiving a lot of acorn disks) that a tool like this would be super useful. Out of interest - do you have any plans to open source it? (via Github etc.) I will tie up a few loose ends (like some of those mentioned in this thread) and im...

Re: search and alternative versions

On a slight tangent, is there anything in the database that denotes that the media ( .ssd et cetera ) is truly "vanilla" ? ( In other words, that no gubbins like custom title screens, or custom load menus, or after-release amateur bugfixes, have been added to the media ? ) . . My personal preference...

Re: Palettemate / enhanced video ULA with 4096 colours

Is this new device compatible with the specifications / usage of similar add-ons from the Beeb's heyday?

i.e.
1. the original Palettemate device
and
2. the SPX (the Saturn Palette Extension) device

One thing in Acorn User's favour, was 1989's Runemaker game. Great assembly language type-in program that took up several 'yellow pages' of listings to input!

Re: What's your favourite Acorn magazine?

Acorn User was more polished, appearance-wise, but was a bit po-faced in terms of articles. Micro User had better games coverage, and hardware hacking series. Horrible front covers and typography/layouts though (although in later years when it evolved into Acorn Computing - it started to look a lot...

Re: acornpreservation.org down?

I don't know of site where they are available, pity really as it was a good site for high quality original images of bbc software, for tapes discs and documentation. Yeah, there was a load of FDI files of BBC games. Also, I recall it having super-high-resolution scans of Master Compact game inlays....

Re: Help required for the new BBC games archive

Thanks for the effort on this site. Might it be possible to centre and/or crop screengrabs? Example: http://www.bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=879 is incorrectly offset to the top. On a real VDU, the the smaller mode 5 screen is centered on the screen.

Re: B+64k Special 12k?

Am I right in thinking that code running from this 12K RAM bank can directly access the shadow RAM? And in fact that's the only place user code on a B+ can access the shadow RAM from, short of going via the OS? (This is based on a memory of poking around in the b-em source code; I'm at work now so ...

Cool.

It would be nice to see 'vanilla' versions (i.e no modifications) of a diskette highlighted. Just like some other platform's websites distinguish between unaltered versions and 'cracked' versions.
