Re: Any Acorn repairists?

I went away and wrote an RDRM routine.... took a bit of re-learning of assembler Got exactly the same result. Tried it again without the Plus1 connected, no expansions at all. ....got complete garbage. It turns out you're absolutely right, Beebmaster. Then I found this thread....its a bit old.... bu...

Re: Any Acorn repairists?

Very many thanks to daveejhitchins ....got my Electron working again. I really was expecting the worst... a dead ULA. A dead, soldered in ULA. Transpires I just left the keyboard unplugged! What I had completely forgotten until I dug it out to take to Dave was the 'modifications' I had done..... Mum...

Re: BBC B screen position

Its likely its the telly causing the problem. Digital TVs are made with firmware for digital transmissions. Displaying PAL is an after thought, so the implementation is likely something the manufacturer found on Stackoverflow! That is, IF the process is something like.... 1) trim PAL overscan 2) sen...

Good thinking
Thats a single unicode character.
Can see some mail handlers falling over with that though.

Re: Stardot possibly hacked?

True. It's just that governments still don't understand the whole problem of 'data' enough to grant the ICO sufficient powers. You also have to bear in mind that to some organisations (e.g. the telecine company I mentioned above), good security is just way above their capabilities, and, "the interne...

Re: Booo bip!

Welcome, *TAPE. :D It is a pity you did not keep either of the 'Faxes' from Sheffield. So little of that has survived. I worked in the next door county and hadn't heard of either of those packages. Just shows how insular we were BITD. :( Ive been rummaging through the internets..... Cityfax in the ...

Re: Stardot possibly hacked?

It's hard to prevent spam, but it's very easy to trace the origin..... buy your own domain name, and set up a catch all. To explain.... I have my own .uk domain name, and I have a server behind it. The mail server has just one email inbox, but it is configured as a 'catch all' for inbound mail. Any ...

Oh joy!

At least I know they have not been kept somewhere warm with high humidity.
Mostly cold and dry.

Re: Any Acorn repairists?

I have a whole stash of 5.25" discs and cassettes. They've been kept in their original sleeves and boxes, inside a plastic box, inside a plastic box in a loft.
I am going to need to clean these before attempting to revive them?
e.g. wind and rewind tapes, rotate discs by hand

Re: Any Acorn repairists?

Many thanks for the swift replies, and encouragement, really appreciate it.

As above though, I currently have little spare time. Much as this is right up my street, fault finding, electronics repair, and code, I would prefer to hand these to someone who knows what they're doing right from the off.

Re: Booo bip!

Many thanks for the welcomes, all. The stuff being done with stock micros is what amazes me most. Demos from Bitshifters and 0xC0DE. And what is now known as "UX".... ways of presenting information on screen and interacting with the user have advanced. flaxcottage..... The original Cityfax was writt...

A whole TV station worth of kit

BBC Wales is being cleared out and it's all for sale in the internets! A whole TV station -Catering kit -a whole show room of settee's, in weird colours, graced by some of the finest bums in Wales -edit kit -sound kit -a LOT of digital tellys -a LOT of CRTs -a LOT of PAL (analogue) and/or digital SD...

Any Acorn repairists?

Bit of an ambiguous title, but that about covers it. I have a selection of Acorn things which I know are not working, but I would like to be functional again. -Model B (with DFS) -Cassette deck -Cub monitor -Cumana disc -Electron (with Plus1) I recall I powered up both about 12 years ago. The BBC B ...

Booo bip!

Hello, world! Yet another n00b! ...and 40 something who self-taught himself many things Acorn in the 1980s, and was (like most) light years ahead of the teachers! I went to City School, in Sheffield, where we had a teletext service called Cityfax. It was an absolute rip off of Ceefax, but with their...
