Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

Yes I have ESCFLAG at $FF. I will take a look in the debugger and see if bit 7 is getting set somehow. However, unless Lisp is setting it and expecting MOS to clear it, I don't see how it would be getting set. [EDIT: I just took a look in an Apple II emulator which lets you set write breakpoints and...

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

I also fixed the OSCLI handling so it passes unknown commands to the language ROM service entry point. Lisp 'Cold Start' now runs and brings you back to the 'Evaluate' prompt. However Lisp still seems to think there is an escape condition so it doesn't evaluate or print anything. That is the next my...

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

Yeah that was it ... OSBPUT was trashing the accumulator. Fixed, and PRINT# works now.

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

Hmmm, have to investigate why PRINT# doesn't seem to be working then. That is super odd. Probably I am trashing a register or something stupid.

Also, I think OPENUP is creating the file if it doesn't exist, which is not correct. Should just return 0. That is probably a simple fix to OSFILE.

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

So the way OPENUP is behaving is correct?

Here is another thing which is puzzling me. I can't seem to get PRINT# to write anything to a file. I had assumed it basically did a bunch of BPUTs but maybe not?

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

I have most of the file system calls working now so I can do file I/O in BASIC. (OPENIN, OPENOUT, OPENUP, BGET#, BPUT#, EOF#, CLOSE# all work.) One question. When a file is opened for 'update' how exactly is it to be handled? In particular where is the file pointer immediately after opening - the be...

I think I read this passage already. I need to get back to this once I have the filing system calls (OSFIND, OSBGET, OSBPUT, OSARGS) working.

Re: Acornsoft LISP disassembly

It is Lisp I am looking for. I have the Forth disassembly and it was very handy for getting Forth working with Applecorn.

Thanks though :)

I will give the Service Entrypoint a try then!

(I was trying and failing to find the details of what exactly I had to do, but you just succinctly gave me all the info I need I think. Thanks!!)

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

Thanks for the pull request JGH!! I just managed to merge it on a second attempt after the first one went pear shaped. (Or is that Applecorn-shaped?) I am working on OSFILE, OSBGET and OSBPUT at the moment. Main mystery I am trying to chase down is why LISP doesn't work. It seems to think escape is ...

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

I just played with BCPL a bit - I think it is basically working but useless until I implement the remaining syscalls so it can access the disk. It will be interesting to see if the disk based portions of BCPL (such as the compiler) can be made to work also.

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

The two on my target list right now are Lisp and BCPL. I think the BCPL will require me to implement the rest of the I/O syscalls (OSFIND, OSGETB, OSPUTB etc.) I have also been wondering about the two ROM languages like the ISO Pascal. If the code uses the OSRDRM call to access the 'other' ROM then ...

I added a README.md to the Github repo, so there is some documentation now:

Acornsoft LISP disassembly

Does anyone happen to know if there is an annotated disassembly of Acornsoft Lisp anywhere?

Would be handly for getting it to run with Applecorn!

Yeah, order the kit from Reactive Micro. I upgraded mine a few years ago.

Sorry it needs enhanced just because I prefer writing 65C02 code over plain 6502.

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

New version just checked in. Now I can also run Forth (so BASIC, COMAL, Forth all working now.) Forth was very picky about the exact way OSWORD(A=&00) was implemented so I ended up having to steal some code from the real MOS 1.20 to make it happy. Next challenge is to get Lisp going! https://git...

Hmm that is weird - not seen those symptoms. Just to check, your //e is enhanced, right?

Looks like you are getting the first chars of the messages ... 'U' is probably "Unable to load the ROM ..."

Try setting the PREFIX explicitly before running: PREFIX /APPLECORN

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

Latest version I just pushed to Github has basic functionality for the following '*' commands: *QUIT - quit to ProDOS *HELP *CAT or *. *DIR (for example *DIR /H1/APPLECORN ) BASIC and COMAL are working and you can LOAD and SAVE files. Use BRUN APPLECORN to start the code. It will load whatever ROM i...

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

With the latest version on Github, as of today, COMAL is also working (if you rename the COMAL rom to BASIC.ROM .. there is no fancy selector yet.) There is also a rather primitive *CAT / *. command so you can list the current directory. I plan to add *DIR shortly so one can navigate the ProDOS file...

I have been meaning to write some documentation but I haven't yet.

There is a disk image if anyone with an Apple //e (or emulator) wants to try it!

I don't believe that is a standard thing for Issue 3s. Pretty sure mine does not have that!

You have a super early serial number <5K! (Mine is more like 10K).

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

I have been tinkering with this a bit more and have BASIC working in a usable way on the //e now. My 'MOS' is still rather basic so I just support 80 column text mode for now - no graphics, no sound. I implemented OSFILE (for A=&00 and A=&FF) so programs can be LOADed or SAVEed. I haven't im...

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

It looks like it is going to work! I think I have de-risked it at this point.

The main remaining technical challenge is to hook up the disk I/O to Apple ProDOS, but that ought to be do-able. Of course there is still lots of work to do to build a decent VDU driver etc. etc.

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

Finally back at the keyboard to hack on this some more. I have the break handler working now. It turns out my OSBYTE call was messing up the stack. Fixed that and things are much happier now! Thank you to JGH for you words of wisdom (and commented BASIC2 disassembly, which is most helpful!)

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

The //e has a very simple speaker (read a magic address to make it click). No text colours at all. Can do 40 or 80 column text screen but I am focussing on 80 cols at the moment.

I love PDP-11 stuff too. I used to have an 11/34c in my living room 25 years ago!

Thanks again! I will try something along those lines later today or tomorrow.

Very excited to have this working on the //e!

I seem to get a bunch of OSBYTE(&DA) calls, which is something to do with the VDU queue. Do I need to service these, and if so, how?

Re: Possible to run Acorn BBC Micro Language ROM on another 6502 system?

OK, my I/O routines are rather rudimentary, but I managed to run a simple BBC BASIC program on the //e. Not bad for a couple of days hacking!

Error handling is still broken, which probably means I am not handling the BRK vector properly.
