Re: zimodem + commstar + viewdata mode = How do I dial?

OK problem solved. It's not something you would configure with a regular modem, but I thought I'll check if the zimodem board had data, parity, and stop bit settings. Indeed it goes. ATB"1200,7E1" fixed the problem. I figured if that's what my terminal was set to, then modem must be able t...

[Solved] zimodem + commstar + viewdata mode = How do I dial?

I just got my wifi modem working on my BBC B and have been playing around with. All is fine in terminal mode, however I seem to have hit a snag trying to dial out in viewdata mode. For those who know, if you press # in commstar, it switches you between terminal and viewdata, where characters are not...

Re: No -5v after recap

None of the resistors are in the wrong way round. I was careful to check each one when I put them back in. I have found a local electrician a couple of miles away and didn't even know his store existed and I've lived here almost 25 years. Looks like he'll fix anything you can shove a voltage through...

Re: Viewdata Service

I know this thread is some years old but you never know who might be interested. I've been running a bulletin board for a few years now using Sycnrhonet BBS software. The author added support for PETSCII so I thought why not support AcornSCI :) Well, whatever you want to call it. The software is wr...

Re: No -5v after recap

In circuit testing of electrolytic capacitors is problematic, as the results are affected by other components... I’ve not known a through hole capacitor be killed by soldering before. This tester is supposed to be able to check in circuit capacitors. Oh well. I've ordered some more anyway. I've rep...

Re: No -5v after recap

Also, check the wound component solder joints. They tend to flex with the shock of power cycling and go open circuit eventually. I've seen this on most of my beebs. I'll take a look. I did use a newly acquired ESR tester and both my 220uf caps are coming up as unrecognized when in the board. I'm go...

Re: No -5v after recap

It's unlikely since it was working before it went poof and I'm the only one to fasten the screws and I'm sure it's not been over tightened. That said, to be sure I'll take it out of its housing again tomorrow and take a look.

Re: No -5v after recap

Check nothing is shorted on the motherboard. Measure resistance between -5V and 0V, and 5V and -5V. This is without connecting to the otherboard. I put a load between 0v and +5v (a car lamp) and it lights up. I get +v5.02v which is fine. cap C21 looked dodgy so I replaced it, checking first with a ...

Seeking mode 7 artists

Hi all, I run a bulletin board that I've written a viewdata module for. For those who remember Prestel, it's similar, using the mode 7 teletext graphics and navigating by using single key presses or *keywords#. My graphics abilities comes somewhere between stick men and prehistoric cave scratchings....

Re: No -5v after recap

Bah, don't give up because you succeeded! I'm not so sure yet. Put everything back and was getting very little volume on the speaker. I could hear it when I turn on, very faint, but nothing after that. Oh, the -5v connector came away from the MB when I tried to pull it off. I resoldered and it look...

Re: No -5v after recap

OK, panic over. On a hunch I swapped out the C21 cap for a spare (thankfully when I ordered, I doubled up). Now I'm getting -5v, +5.02v and ~+13v so I'm happy.

Thanks for everyone's advice and assistance and I promise I'm never taking my PSU apart again, I'll make it someone elses problem lol.

Re: No -5v after recap

When I did mine I found I'd managed to bridge two tracks with some solder, I checked for this before powering it back up using an ohmmeter so worth having a zip through to make sure you haven't bridged two tracks, particularly those tracks that are close to each other and with components you de/res...

Re: No -5v after recap

Mark, It wasn't loaded. Later on a put a 12.8v bulb between one of the 0v and the +5v on the disc power connector and it lit up. Once the load was applied the +v5 was 5.02v and the +12v on the disc connector was 13.41v. I don't have a disc drive, just a Gotek. However, both the purple -5v and the -5...

No -5v after recap

Almost there with my PSU recap for the BBC B. I'm getting about 5.34v on the 3 motherboard connectors and the drive connector. I'm getting 12.23v on the drive connector +12v line. Unfortunately I'm getting 0v on the -5v purple and drive connector so I've missed something somewhere. I'm not going to ...

Re: Howdy from Texas

Thanks to all for the welcome. I did find a BBC B here. I got a dual 110v to 240v transformer so I could power the TV my parents imported from England. Had it running for a minute or two and the magic smoke appeared. I replaced the burned out cap and thanks to Mark at Retroclinic and tons of advice,...

[Resolved] Issue after recap

Hi all, Some background on the issue first. I'm in the US and purchased a working BBC B. It was working for about 2 minutes until the magic smoke escaped. I managed to get in a game of Zalaga! The TV I'm using is from the UK with an RGB to SCART cable. Opening up the power supply I saw that capacito...

Once it's working to your satisfaction, let me know its name and URL and I'll add it to telstar.bbc's initial menu of services. Ditto Matrix Brandy ...

If this is still available. I'd be interested in buying it if you're able to ship it to RetroClinic so it can be converted and upgraded.
Since you say you can't reply to PMs you can email me at nigel at nigelreed dot net if you wish.

Howdy from Texas

Greets all. I grew up in the UK using BBC computers at school and eventually upgraded my Vic20 to a BBC B. I ended up getting a 1770 DFS fitted and after a stint of large phone bills on Prestel, decided I'd write my own BBS software. My board was somewhat short lived since it was running at my paren...

WTB: BBC Model B

Hi all, Long time reader but first time poster :) When I lived in the UK as a kid I had a BBC Micro and when I moved to the US my parents ditched it along with the SWR, double floppy drive, 10MB hard drive, hundreds of floppies...you get the idea. I talked to Mark at RetroClinic and he'll put a US p...
