Re: Edit Template problem

I think this is because they are in the ROM and the Edit template file has been corrupted by a rare event changing a byte in the ROM so that the only way to regain edit is to replace the ROM. I can only state again - if your ROM had failed or 'changed', then its startup checksum check would definit...

Re: Restoring an A540 and a R260 - where to start?

Does the CMOS unreadable mean that the chip needs to be replaced, or that it just found junk in it? It could mean the chip needs to be replaced OR that the signals aren't getting to/from it. I2C goes to IOC so that could even be the root cause, since the IOC test failed too. Forget all about CMOS u...

Re: Risc PC 600

Well it's here and it's all great! I now have many questions: I could do with a manual for it. Anything available in PDF for example? https://www.4corn.co.uk/articles/docs/ I also want to network enable it. What's the best way to do that? RiscPC has a dedicated "NIC" slot at the back. Get...

Re: A3000 Restoration

Keep up the good work! When I repaired my A3020 I also found that some of the surface mount resistors had changed value due to corrosion too. Once you’ve buzzed out the traces might be worth then checking resistances — 2-3 of mine were reading too high and dropping more voltage than they should. Be...

I'd be quite surprised if that mouse socket isn't available - I've had to replace keyboard sockets on A4000s and I think they're more exotic (similar mini-DIN - they come in a huge variety of patterns) [EDIT: Mouse socket here - https://stardot.org.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=19352 ] Good call on the ...

I don't understand 'ResourceFS'. Is this in ROM, so the ROM is corrupt. ResourceFS isn't anywhere in !Boot. ResourceFS what runs the "Apps" icon on the bar. Click on it, then click the RIGHT HAND mouse-button on the close icon to get to the root of ResouceFS. ROM won't be "corrupt&qu...

Re: Edit Template problem

!Edit is in ROM. Its templates file is in ResourceFS (Resource:$.Resources.Edit.Templates)
You may have installed something to give you updated (3D?) templates though.

The !Boot.Resources.Wimp.Templates file is for the desktop itself - Error boxes, etc.

Re: A3000 Restoration

My method with the green rot is to hit it with 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. Wait until the fizzing stops, or 30secs max - that's usually enough to nicely soften the green stuff - then wash down and start gently rubbing with cotton buds soaked in 99% IPA. Expect to use a lot of cotton buds ;...

Re: A3000 Restoration

Those connectors look useful. Looks like they punch a hole in the flex - I'm assuming they're a one-way trip. Given the state of the ribbon and the connectors that's probably not a bad thing. Yeah, they'e "desctructive" which some people think is sacrilege, but if you're planning on remov...

I favour removing the keyboard socket, replacing with a standard 0.1" pin strip and putting Amphenol "Clincher" connectors on the flexi as a long term solution that won't wear out anywhere near so quickly as fragile old membrane : https://stardot.org.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t...

Re: RISC iX on Arculator 2.0

Works fine here. Did you remember to load FPE 4.xx? I did not. Just tried with 4.03 and that seems ok. I completely forgot this manual load was required at all to be honest. I assume the same nonsense happens with a real FPA then? Also if you think you've found a bug it's generally polite to report...

Re: RISC iX on Arculator 2.0

Used an A540 base image in Arculator with 16Mb memory, FPA10, ROS311) IX probably doesn't use FPA, but be aware the FPA emulation in Arculator is broken in fun ways. (simple example - rotate an object in !Draw with FPA enabled... goes wrong) I would never advise using the FPA option in Arculator in...

The error you see just means the drive's not formatted - it's ok.
You can get a USB floppy drive for absolutely peanuts on eBay. Worth doing as then you'll have a way of transferring data to your A3020, starting with !HForm to get the CF drive formatted :)

That's a 10uF capacitor. To be clear - C84 is a 10uF, or the little SMD parasite soldered onto C84 is 10uF? The SMD is 10uF (took it off-board to measure).. But now you mentioned the failure to boot ... umm ... this may have been my bodge! Now I look at the schematic, C84 is the POR and I definitel...

That's a 10uF capacitor. Detailed photo below, along with the 47pF near C226 and missing capacitors near the SMC chip as I'd noted earlier. No oother obvious bodges but I'll check and compare for missing parts later. I note there are no tants on this board - they're all electrolytic.

I've found it's -always- cheaper and quicker to get the seller to sort the duty. I do this with stuff from China and the US. For example, it's just £17 for DHL "DDP" service from JLCPCB almost no matter how many boards I order. The one time I tried not using this service, there was a huge ...

Re: Econet Bug with FCFS

If you're serving out of a SparkFS archive, then Linux doesn't need to be able to understand the file contents - the decompression happens on the RiscPC. Perhaps I'm not understanding quite what you're doing/expecting.

Have you tried CoreFS instead of FCFS ?

Re: How to get a FPA11 working?

Is there any merit in trying to temporarily downclock the ARM3? 25MHz isn't pushing things anyway, but may be a route to check that the combo ARM3/FPA11 pair can work together at some level ? Re: How to get a FPA11 working?

However, on further inspection of the A540 ARM3/FPA card, it looks like the decoupling capacitors on there are 100 uF (not nF). I don't have any of these to hand for testing - but at 1000x higher capacitance, would this seem reasonable to try next? Well you won't get SMD caps of 100uF in 0805 or wh...
