Re: Manic Miner (Electron)

I tried just that but forgot that the loader moves a chunk of memory to $380 and another chunk of memory to the very end of screen memory Just a thought - how about changing to Mode1 at the end of "MANIC", then *RUN MINER, which executes at &4938 (where there's space to put your reloc...

I am still thinking about a different loading mechanism but memory is tight.
1 Page of 'Wallpaper' Loader @ &7F00, with your logo, in the style of Elementum / ElectroBots ? :-k

Re: Manic Miner (Electron)

That will be a wonderfully authentic experience! Please let me know if it works ok, especially if there are colours bleeding from the HUD to the game area or vice versa (that will be a timing issue). It's all good ! :D Couldn't spot any timing issues / bleeding (apart from my dodgy TV !). Really mu...

Yay, it's all excellent stuff ! :D =D> =D> =D>

Will take a 'few hours off work' tomorrow to try it on my Electron - vanilla Release 2 (not even a Plus 1 at the moment), PlayUEF your tape image straight into the tape port !

Marvellous :D

Excellent work Toby :D =D>

Great write-up too, just had a quick read. Had no idea all those optimisations were available ! Will have a more in-depth read when I get some time.

Re: Programming Help

A favourite game of mine back in the day was Virgin's Space Adventure. I finally got it working on the Elk last year, but it's so slow (without a turbo board !). I shelved it when I found it was realtime shifting those large-ish Mode 1 sprites ! :( Pesky.

Re: Drawing Lines on a CRTC Reduced Screen Width

Keeping all my retro dev stuff on a USB stick (dev anywhere!) and using github saved me many times.
I tried a USB stick. If I left it for a few days I'd have no idea which laptop the latest data on it came from !! :?

Looks the same, but I've just gained 4K of memory (or something like that) :D =D>

I'm happy now, this can go on the shelf for a little while. It's Pooyan time !

Re: Drawing Lines on a CRTC Reduced Screen Width

Thanks for that :D Yes, I like Snuggsy's all at Sea - totally bonkers, as was the development ! Got about 3 different versions - 2 birds dropping eggs, leaving mess you have to avoid. One version had the helicopter land on a hill, then it turns to a night level with a big blue Phoenix bird dropping ...

Marvellous Rob, many thanks for this :D =D> I'm only concentrating on Model B stuff, so it's fine. I posted a little series on Twitter (@Snuggsy187) about previous software projects and why I put them on hold / abandoned them. This seriously helps with solving Number 5 - Atic Atac ! :D Although Kelv...

Thanks Tricky, those demos seemed to have passed me by, impressive stuff :D

And thanks RobC, I happened across E0 and E1 this morning while looking at a memory map, but didn't realise it's significance.
I'll have a little tinker.....

Cheers :D

Drawing Lines on a CRTC Reduced Screen Width

Hi all, Not sure this has been addressed before (it was mentioned briefly in a Dev Session last year). On a BBC, if I've reduced a Mode1 screen width with: VDU23,0,1,64,0,0,0,0,0,0 VDU23,0,2,90,0,0,0,0,0,0 And then do: MOVE 0,0: DRAW 1276,1020 You get this: CRTC Draw.gif I know there's the excellent...

Re: Lady Bug

Good work again, keep it up :D It's good to see development of any kind no matter how small ! I've learned to keep regular backups. I've also learned not to do any development with the sound turned off. Something I did broke the music and I didn't find out until much later ! Had to go back 3 version...

Re: BBC Pooyan

Yay, definitely a speed increase - those raster tests are a lot more stable too :D

It'd be nice to use the entire 32K, but with all the intro and trees code, they just won't fit :( ..... Unless the intro only plays once, then shut out the OS..... I'll see how that goes !

Re: BBC Pooyan

Another kind of update, but not much to show for it visually ! Have found where the print routines sometimes miss a print zone, causing an extra VSYNC before displaying. Annoying, but should be easy to fix. I thought it high time I disable the keyboard and use direct hardware checks. With the help o...

Many thanks and great work on this Toby :D =D>

I did vaguely start (and abruptly stopped) a disassembly last year just to see if there were any obvious speed increases for the Electron !

Looking forward to giving this an in-depth read through when I get the time ! :D

Cool sprite sheet ! Like the logo as well :D - maybe black out the enclosed bits of red ? :-k

I feel you pain ! I kept tinkering with my timings in Pooyan (fixing issues when sprite transitions from one erase zone into a different print zone, etc). Had to force myself to leave it alone and get on with other stuff !

Excellent work, keep it up ! :D =D>

Re: BBC Pooyan

Thanks fwibbler :D I did ponder using Mode2/5 for the BBC version initially - went with Mode1 to keep it more in line with the arcade version (more of a portrait aspect) - didn't want it to look like this: 300px-Pooyan_A800.gif And using Mode2/5 with the portrait look, you're going to lose resolutio...

Thanks for the offer 0xC0DE :D I'll keep that in mind. I would have said possibly some help regarding your impressive chasing of the raster on the Elk, although not sure if the gameplay would be suitable for that..... We'll see ! :D

Back on the horse again, kind of..... Ignored the rising balloons for now.... Wolves now climbing ladders, the problem is when they snap out at Mama pig. If they hit her, she get's thrown out of the carriage and dies. If they hit the carriage or miss, nothing happens. Loads of issues trying to overl...

Re: 50fps?

I soon realised Pooyan wouldn't be 50fps, Too many large sprites. Had to knock the main carriage movement down to 25. 8 Wolves and/or balloons, split over 4 frames. What with rocks and arrows flying around all the time, and some other animation, it seems ok - although I keep going back to print rout...
