Re: Issue 6 ELK - White Screen

Dave Hitchins would probably be a good source of info, it's my (limited) understanding that it's rare for Issue 6 ULA's to go bad, but more knowledgeable people will give you a more definitive answer.

Re: A partial disassembly of Podd (for translation into Welsh)

Podd is pretty much my first memory of using computers, in primary school during the 80's (probably somewhere between 1986-88). It's one of the things that got me started 'retro-ing' all these years later :)

Re: Today I received.....

I never knew these existed for the Beeb, but I remember it as the coveted joystick BITD for C64 and Amstrad owners (I.e. 8 year old me), and this one appears to have an analogue connector. I took a punt and it works perfectly: 20200521_205101.jpg 20200521_205109.jpg Just had a blast on Cylon Attack ...

that 16032 board state ISS. F - doesn't that indicate that it's a prototype, as Acorn used letters for proto's and numbers for releases?

Re: A new MENU system for MMC/Gotek

Hi, It was the dropbox menu system I used. I don't know what happened with AstroBlaster, I may try again to see if I can replicate the issue, but it will be a day or two before I can do it thanks to real life! Your explanation makes sense, in that this confusion is what I saw with the machine, which...

Re: A new MENU system for MMC/Gotek

Sorry, I don't think I have a working IFEL board, nor a beeb that I can put the watford dfs in. Do you definitely have Flash Floppy and if so, which version? First thing, does your GOTEK have a FlashFloppy from the time since my original first post? I think that it lists the disk number and the exe...

Re: A new MENU system for MMC/Gotek

Hi Tricky, Just trying this out with my Gotek. I have the IFEL RAMROM board installed, running a Gotek off WF DFS 1.54T (1772). Menu loads up as expected. I went to load Imogen (pressed Return on the menu entry, get the EXEC message, then 'file not found', and have to BREAK to get back to the Beeb ...

Re: Acquired my first Model B today

Well, I got my Beeb back from RetroClinic yesterday, all up and running nicely. There were a few issues way beyond my skill to diagnose so it was the right call in the end. Anyway, during this lockdown I've gone a little nuts. I was furloughed on 1 April, and went I to lockdown with 2 Electrons, a t...

Re: Elksd-plus1 Interface

Yep. More should be available shortly, possibly as soon as next week. Can't say a date for sure yet as the next batch is the first run of the new revision 2 boards, which are quite a bit different from the old rev 1 model. I'm still testing the new ROM that's required for the rev 2 hardware, but it...

Hi Gary, Sorry to resurrect an older thread, but I was wondering when you might have the ElkSD Plus1 available again (if at all)? I've already got your excellent ElkSD MkII, and I now have a second Elk with Plus 1 that would love to have one of these bad boys in it's slot (ooer!). Any plans to do an...

Re: Another noob issue - disk fault 10

To be honest, I bought this as it was listed as fully tested and working, with drives and housing in as new condition. Given that I paid a 3 figure sum because it was advertised as such, I think I'm going to return it for a refund. The point was to avoid this hassle. I have a TurboMMC to use on my B...

Re: Another noob issue - disk fault 10

Any drive can be device 0 and any drive can be device 1. But at no time can they both be the same device number. You can test if it is the cable if you have a multimeter or a logic probe, or even a simple test circuit (one resistor and a RED or GREEN LED). Mark Hi Mark, I have a multimeter. Could i...

Or the cable? I'd have expected a different fault with knackered heads.. 18 or something :? d. Unfortunately, I don't have another cable to test it. The seller offered a refund for sending back, I might have to take that up. It's a real shame because the unit looks like new. One last thought - woul...

Re: Another noob issue - disk fault 10

OK, the plot thickens...

I decided to try and check each logical drive to see if I got any signs of life. Drives 0, 1 and 3 will not CAT, FORMAT or VERIFY any disks. However, Drive 2 enabled me to format a disk to 80 track and then CAT it perfectly well.

Are the drive heads knackered?

Although, I guess it could be the issue (i.e. incompatability)? I can use a VERIFY command, it simply gives the same disk fault 10 code.

Re: Another noob issue - disk fault 10

What DFS are you using? Many of them (usually with an 8271 controller) don't have an in-built formatter and verifier, so without a formatted disc already in the drive, you will get a disc error of some sort. Hiya, I'm using the revamped Pegasus 400 E00 DFS from Dave Hitchins, so that's not the issu...

Unplug drive 1, just leave 0 connected. What happens then?

Basically it's drive motor not spinning, disk not in properly or a clash between drives that tends to cause that error...

Re: Another noob issue - disk fault 10

To clarify, I've got the cover off at the moment to try and work out what is happening. I have also manually moved the head on the disc to ensure It's resetting to track 0 when CATing. it is, on both drives. Could it be something to do with the DFS stepping rates?

That's "drive not ready". What's on the disks? Are you sure the Peg's working? What's the surface condition of the disks like?
