Re: Epson HX-20 Blitz/Bomber game Recovered

Further to the above, I've just discovered that there may be another 'lost' game for the Epson HX-20. Just seen on another site (a Twitter feed actually) mention of a game called CAVERN.BAS. I've never heard of this before. I've now had chance to look this up, and I've found other mentions on the we...

Re: Recorded BBC Tape Wave File

Hello, I've just spent quite a bit of time with files just like this. Trying to recover a program file for a game for the Epson HX-20, from a micro-cassette. After quite a struggle, due to deterioration of the recording, we managed to get a recording that the HX-20 would LOAD, and the game is now wo...

Epson HX-20 Blitz/Bomber game Recovered

Further to a recent discussion here, the game BOMBER was mentioned, but more correctly the game 'formerly known as BLITZ' written by Simon Taylor back in 1983. I was trying to track this game down myself. Others here were expressing interest in getting a copy. Well, finally got it. Go to: https://ww...

Re: Epson HX20 - first laptop !EVER! 1981+

You can check if this is the same Forth that I'm referring to. There should be 3 references in the code to J W BROWN, these are a little way into the file. If you look at the original BIN data, these are just after offset 0FAB. If you use the Monitor to check the ROM code, these will be after addres...

Aha - so you've 'burned' the ROM yourself. Where did you get the image from? I know there's an image from my ROM floating about. The Trap will refer to certain details, incl a memory address. Please note the details given by Trap. This info is there for a reason, to help determine what the problem i...

Re: Epson HX20 - first laptop !EVER! 1981+

Still don't know which Forth this is. There were at least 2 back then. They may be different. The ROM should work in the OPTION ROM slot underneath, there is the one space free, and the ROM should be the same way around as the others. If it's added OK to the menu, then it should be OK. If you cannot...

Re: Epson HX20 - first laptop !EVER! 1981+

Further to the above, way back I had a rather useful piece of Forth code (3 screens I think) which provided a disassembler for any Forth 'word'. The code was from an article in (I think) the .EXE magazine - I have a photocopy of the article, might even still have the original mag in a box in the gar...

Re: Epson HX20 - first laptop !EVER! 1981+

Hello, I've got the HCCS Forth ROM in my HX, and I can get the same problem. The Forth uses the same lower RAM space as BASIC, if you start FORTH and try to do a 'Warm' start then you risk this problem if there is data set by BASIC present. You need to do a 'Cold' start which resets everything. If y...

Re: Transfer of files into a CP/M disk image MAC

At the top of this thread you expressed an interest in dbase and wordstar. If you're still interested in those packages, then I do have the CP/M version of dBase II (I think specifically version 2.43) and WordStar (not sure what the CP/M version is) but both of these have been working on my Amstrad ...

Re: Epson HX20 - first laptop !EVER! 1981+

Noted. The enable instruction seems similar to the one for my board.

I assume the problem you have is that this facility is for release 4 or higher. You must have an earlier release, which does not allow the soft switching of the ROM. There's prob nothing you can do about that.

Paul, Thanks for the update. Yes, I see references to the electrolytic caps in the HX. Some folks like to repl them anyway. Others refer to problems with the lcd display indicating that the caps need repl. The caps in mine have NOT been repl, everything seems to be working OK (apart from the hs seri...

Hello, Regarding the RAM board, please look at the documents on the web by Martin Hepperl - search for Hepperl HX-20 and you should go right to it. Regarding the software, what sort of thing are you looking for if NOT BASIC listings? The machine was originally sold into a business market, and the bulk of t...

Regarding the BOMBER game for the HX-20 - I am still in pursuit of this, trying to find the game, and I have a note that there are folks here who would like the game. I now know that there are two versions of BOMBER, quite different. There is a version written by William Smith, for Epson, and this v...

Re: Double sided, double density 5.25” PC disc drives

Always interested in compilers etc myself. Checking the photo you linked above, I note that you've got the docs etc for v.3.31 of MS Fortran for MS-DOS, which I discover is dated 1985. I've found a copy of this in VetusWare, and downloaded it. This comes as a .ZIP file, and when this is extracted, t...

Re: Double sided, double density 5.25” PC disc drives

Since the above, I've looked up about image files and DOSBox, and I see that DB allows you to load all 4 images together, and once active, to swap between them (using Ctrl-F4 I think). If DB recognises the image OK (.IMG file) then each image will see the complete disk, i.e. both sides of the floppy...

Re: Double sided, double density 5.25” PC disc drives

I still have a working PC with a 5.25" drive, it's actually a HD drive, but it will read 360k disks, and with a little care I can write them as well. I use this facility for working with CP/M disks, incl creating disks from images, etc. You don't say what drive facilities you have on your PC. I...

Jon, I'm a bit mystified about some of what you say about the screen. You say, or suggest, that you've been doing something in the Monitor. If this is working, i.e. giving you a useable screen, then the screen is OK? The Menu is constructed within virtual screen and then displayed, like everything e...

Re: Epson HX20 - first laptop !EVER! 1981+

Hello Marcus, Maybe you've tried the save now, and it worked OK. You need a couple of mini (3.5mm) jack leads, and connect like to like to your laptop. The sockets on the HX indicate the destination, so it's mic on the HX to mic on the laptop. I used the SOUNDRECORDER application on my laptop, quick...

Re: Epson HX20 - first laptop !EVER! 1981+

Col, I've got a BAS program called HXDEMO, but I'm sure it's not the same as the one in the video. Some of the bits of the demo may be similar, some of the graphics things, sound (?), but there's quite a bit of text, and text printing. This prog is about 17k in size, so there'll be a problem unless ...

Re: Epson HX20 - first laptop !EVER! 1981+

Col, I'll look out fir another 'bomber' game. Or, I'll just need to re-write parts of the existing BOMBER game to create one. I'd guess that the 'City Bomber' has a similar plane/bomb mechanism, just that the game draws a 'city' on the screen as a target which is then progressively bombed (until the...

Re: Epson HX20 - first laptop !EVER! 1981+

Col, Just to clarify, BASIC and FORTH use the same RAM, esp the bottom of RAM for a lot of 'system' stuff. If you've been doing anything with BASIC, when you start FORTH and get the WARM? prompt you should say N (for No) which will allow FORTH to reset things as it needs. Else you risk all sorts of ...

Hello Col, Right, the other one you illustrate has the expansion unit attached, this may well provide extra RAM (to get you up to the 32k max) as well as alternative space for ROMs (I'm pretty sure the HX cannot have more than 64k of whatever/however. I've had some play with BOMBER. I don't know if ...

Mine is (or rather was) a standard machine, bought new 1982 soon after they were first available (after rea...

Hello Col, As for any .WAV files for the Forth (HCCS) - errm, I'd guess not. Certainly far from likely. However, do note that the HCCS implementation is very specific to the HX, and it includes support for the tape storage, both microcassette and external. So there IS a way to SAVE and LOAD regardin...

Col, The good news is that I've converted both the text progs into .WAV files. Better news, both files loaded into the HX, and LIST seemed OK for each. BUT, both progs produce an error, so there's something amiss. In both cases, the error is a NF error, which is 'NEXT before FOR'. Looking at the cod...

Col, Thanks for the message. I assume you've not (yet) tried to do anything with the FORTH? I'll get working with the conv of the two progs. This involves the software from the 'hxtape' project (php code), and also a bit of help from Audacity to get a suitable .WAV file. Once got that, can 'play' th...
