Re: ABUG SOUTH 24 to 26 January 2020: NOW FULL

A kind offer. In any event, it’ll have to wait until I have a working right limb again!

Re: ABUG SOUTH 24 to 26 January 2020: NOW FULL

Damn and double damn. I was really looking forward to tomorrow - but I didn’t realise that I had to pay in advance (and I clearly haven’t logged in to this forum recently enough). Makes sense of course. I just logged on to find out who I had to pay because, much as I want to come, I fell off my bike...

Re: ABUG SOUTH 24 to 26 January 2020 (Hampshire) BOOKING THREAD

I don’t have a monitor - and the TV is too big to tag along - hopefully though someone can help me diagnose the problem without a monitor (or loan one for the diagnosis!)

So, at £15, it’s a snip. See you there!

Re: ABUG SOUTH 24 to 26 January 2020 (Hampshire) BOOKING THREAD

I’d like to come, if possible, mainly to get advice on my poorly beeb, and to meet interesting fellow old computer enthusiasts. (Now that I’ve been forced to get rid of my classic car, my old computers are my main hobby!) Presumably I don’t need to book a table? Do I just rock up? How much just to a...

Re: Cracking tinnitus, Gromit

Okay. Sorry to resurrect a thread that should be resting in peace - but now I have an oscilloscope (one of those cheap DIY jobs off Amazon - but it appears to work). Still no logic analyser - but, given that I now have an oscilloscope (and multimeter, natch), what tests can I do to work out which co...

Yeah 5220. But, given that both are optional, that’s not my main concern at the moment!

Re: Cracking tinnitus, Gromit

Thanks Kazzie. My multimeter, sadly, can't show frequency. And the only setting that I didn't try for S25 was removed - but other than that, you're correct on all points. What does S25 do? Much of the RAM is socketed (Upgraded Model A? But I didn't know that there were any issue 7 A's!) If there's a...

Re: ABUG SOUTH 18 to 20 January 2019 (Hampshire) BOOKING THREAD

What time does this start on the 18th? I can’t do the Saturday and Sunday - but I could do the Friday. And will anyone be attending who might be able to help me diagnose a poorly beeb?

Re: Cracking tinnitus, Gromit

So I finally got time to look at this again. I removed all the socketed chips, emeried them, cleaned the circuit board with circuit board cleaner and reassembled as instructed by 1024MAK. Nothing changed. When I plug the speaker in I still get the same tone and no video on either the video out or UH...

Re: Cracking tinnitus, Gromit

Okay, here's a better picture of the main board. I don't have another BBC at the moment - but I should be able to get it back in December at some point. As to diagnostic tools. I have my eyes, my nose and a multimeter. I've refurbed the PSU and checked it with my multimedia - both loaded and unloade...

Re: Cracking tinnitus, Gromit

Okay. I found another Issue 7 machine (in a Viglen desktop case, but otherwise unmolested) to use as a reference in getting mine back to stock. The only problem with that plan being that the other Beeb doesn't work either - so it might not be the best reference. Having restored mine to what I believ...

Cracking tinnitus, Gromit

Ohh-Kay. So I finally got around to servicing the PSU of freebeeb, and tested the voltages. I’m getting a steady 4.98v on all power lines, with no strange smells or noises. However... ...when I plug the power lines into the motherboard, I get a continuous tone with a shrill edge to it - and no video...

Re: The best SD card reader for the Beeb?

I do have a disk controller - a Watford. I quite liked the look of the MMC though because of that natty menu driven interface. From what I understand of the Gotek it doesn’t offer that - if I’ve understood correctly, the user needs to select the image to use on the Gotek itself. The sideways ROM bas...

The best SD card reader for the Beeb?

The nights are drawing in and I don’t much feel like going for a run in the evenings. It’s time for a project! I have a Beeb - but I’d like a convenient way of loading software onto it. An SD Card Reader would be perfect. There are a few provisos though: * I don’t want to block the user port (becaus...

Mastering the B

I’m pondering what, if anything, prevents a Model B from running Master software (specifically, I’m thinking of software like the recent port of Prince of Persia). I thought that the main difference between the B and the Master is the amount of memory and the MOS version. Is there anything that can ...

Re: I got a Freebeeb! Help needed…

The mouse mystery resolves slightly - the ROMs for AMX Pagemaker have just appeared on my desk! What other software makes use of the mouse on the Beeb? That and AMX Art (thanks for the suggestion, Mark) makes me wonder if a GUI was ever developed to tie the whole lot together. As for Gem, I've seen ...

Re: What is the average age on here??

I’m - well let’s say that I’m comfortably middle aged and leave it at that. If it helps date me, my car was built over half a century ago and I’m listening to vinyl right now. My first computer was a TI99, but I’ve had a ZX81 (given to me, not used much, crap compared with the TI), Newbrain (hours o...

Re: I got a Freebeeb! Help needed…

The plot is thickening nicely (although, since I haven’t yet recapped the Beebs PSU, I haven’t turned the computer on yet). A bag was deposited under my desk last week containing the manuals and a whole load of cables and a few peripherals. One of the manuals was for the Acorn speech synthesiser - s...

Re: I got a Freebeeb! Help needed…

Thank you for all your help! I'm always very cautious about lead solder now (paranoid, perhaps?) - which is especially ridiculous when you consider that I started soldering in the eighties and I didn't worry about it then. I'll let you know how I get on, and I'll share my progress! Are there any app...

I got a Freebeeb! Help needed…

A colleague recently moved house and he was throwing out his BBC B computer - a computer I have always admired, but haven't had much experience of since I was at school. My new beeb seems to be in remarkable condition - the plastics are a nasty colour, but nothing that a little sunlight and hydrogen...
