Re: A4

I got mine to live by recapping the board and doing a thorough clean of it and attaching an AA battery holder. Regardless I still can't get VGA output, which got me at testing time, but the inbuilt screen works fine. Prior to the recap the best I could get out of it were the leds, some random keyboa...

Re: A5000 IDEFS Formatted CF Card

Bit late but you should be able to use win32diskimager to image the CF card on your PC, give it a hdf extension and add to Arculator v2 using the IDEFS podule extension. Works for my A3000 podule (SD card) at least and you can then use the HostFS feature to copy arc/zipped files to the environment b...

Re: A3000 repair -- keyboard connectors

TE website has it's own storefront and these are listed as in stock so ordered 5 units for just under 11USD with free delivery (in fact I made two cents on that delivery apparently). Says 2-4 days to the UK so will let you know how that and connectors themselves turn out. I shouldn't have any proble...

Re: Strange Risc PC video fault

Arrgh that is annoying. Funnily enough my recent searches also brought me here to as at the end of last year as I turned my RPC on, after being off for only a few days, and was greeted with similar symptoms. Board has very little visual damage so hoping for something minor. This thread certainly hel...

Thanks hubers, looks like I might have trouble formatting the card on a PC using an emulator like rpcemu anyway.

Anyone know of a copy of the RISCOS 4.39 CD? The only one I can find on the webs is a dead link and the 3DQ documentation assumes that you already have a live set up and doesn't cover

RISCOS 4.39 ROM Backup

I have a pair of 4.39 ROMS in my RiscPC I'd like to make a backup of in case anything happens to my RPC as I understand they're not easy to get hold of and to use in Arculator (assuming I can) to create a fresh SD build How can I extract the ROMs from the command line and is it just a case of burnin...

Re: Another dead A4

There are some tricky YouTube tutorials on how to cut your own copper pads and glue them to a board. Luckily I've only ever lifted a few pads rather than removed and those were then just re-glued down and continuity checked etc. Personally I'd use a rapid Araldite now

Re: A4 Laptop - replacement electrolytic capacitors and CMOS battery

Ah in that case I need to reassemble the thing and do a reset. Fingers crossed it working now at it seems to respond but no video, just sync Yay! It's working with keyboard and screen attached. No external output though even clearing CMOS with Del, 4, R etc. Those screen connectors are truly awful ...

Re: A4 Laptop - replacement electrolytic capacitors and CMOS battery

Strange, both the keyboard matrix and the PS/2 connector feed into the same 80C51 (IC2), so the IOC shouldn't be able to tell the difference via Kin/Kout. I wonder if it was a dliberate choice by whoever wrote the firmware in the 80C51. The 80C51 does seem to reset the PS/2 keyboard a couple of tim...

Re: A4 Laptop - replacement electrolytic capacitors and CMOS battery

Bonus fact: you can't do a delete-reset using the PS/2 keyboard port. You need to use the internal keyboard. Same goes for all the RISC OS "hold key X on boot" tricks, it seems. That cost me a few minutes of head-scratching while I was trying to figure out what was up with the video output... Stran...

Re: A4 Laptop - replacement electrolytic capacitors and CMOS battery

I recapped my deadish A4 in the spring. I used the TRM to find what capacitor values etc were then tallied up what values I needed to buy in a spreadsheet. Hopefully might save someone a bit of work. Here it is; 10uf 16v (8) - C19 C65 C67 C93 C108 C133 C135 C137 4.7uf 25v (3) - C107 C134 C136 47uf 1...

A310 case restoration

As it's a sunny day and I had a bit of time I figured it would be worth pulling one of my A310's out of storage and doing some case restoration (it's a break from gardening!) The top case was paint stencilled on the worst of them, thanks Coventry University, but came out beautifully with a few coats...

Re: A7000+ battery

Yeah battery will be fine. As you say positive any of the top two and negative the one on it's own. I use 2xAA holder on leads to keep off the board and easier to replace but the mempacs always look cleaner to me!

The 8583 has a wide tolerance (from 1v to 6v I believe)

Re: A4 laptop - no display

No sound at all. Guessing its something around the VIDC chip rather than the chip itself but TRM not giving much away. Ideally I could do with a circuit level diagram which I haven't found for the A4 yet

I've already slightly damaged the floppy connector with hot air!

A4 laptop - no display

Picked up an A4 laptop cheaply months ago but only just got around to taking a look at it as I had to purchase a PSU for it. Surprisingly it powered up but that was really about it. Ocassionally the keyboard LEDs would illuminate but they stay on unresponsively but the HD would occassionally kick in...
