Re: A4 Laptop - replacement electrolytic capacitors and CMOS battery

Ah in that case I need to reassemble the thing and do a reset. Fingers crossed it working now at it seems to respond but no video, just sync Yay! It's working with keyboard and screen attached. No external output though even clearing CMOS with Del, 4, R etc. Those screen connectors are truly awful ...

Re: A4 Laptop - replacement electrolytic capacitors and CMOS battery

Strange, both the keyboard matrix and the PS/2 connector feed into the same 80C51 (IC2), so the IOC shouldn't be able to tell the difference via Kin/Kout. I wonder if it was a dliberate choice by whoever wrote the firmware in the 80C51. The 80C51 does seem to reset the PS/2 keyboard a couple of tim...

Re: A4 Laptop - replacement electrolytic capacitors and CMOS battery

Bonus fact: you can't do a delete-reset using the PS/2 keyboard port. You need to use the internal keyboard. Same goes for all the RISC OS "hold key X on boot" tricks, it seems. That cost me a few minutes of head-scratching while I was trying to figure out what was up with the video output... Stran...

Re: A4 Laptop - replacement electrolytic capacitors and CMOS battery

I recapped my deadish A4 in the spring. I used the TRM to find what capacitor values etc were then tallied up what values I needed to buy in a spreadsheet. Hopefully might save someone a bit of work. Here it is; 10uf 16v (8) - C19 C65 C67 C93 C108 C133 C135 C137 4.7uf 25v (3) - C107 C134 C136 47uf 1...

I'd certainly love a copy of it too if you are able to image There is some SEMERC stuff in the educational archive. Unfortunately My World is one of their titles I am missing too. :( Here you go - MyWorld, two copies of, as ADF files. One apparently contains the Victorian screens (or that's what th...

Re: A310 case restoration

Bit of an update. The last few weeks I've done a bit of research and a bit of experimenting to restore the front of the case. The results have actually been quite pleasing, especially considering it's a first attempt! First I took the front grey insert with badge away from the main plastic fascia an...

Re: A310 case restoration

Cheers Rob and thanks again for the RAL1013 suggestion it really does look as new Only problem is I'm going to have to fill in some stencils on the front-tops of a couple of them so might need painting after filling. I'll give retrobriting the front logoed parts a go or that new-fangled sunbriting a...

A310 case restoration

As it's a sunny day and I had a bit of time I figured it would be worth pulling one of my A310's out of storage and doing some case restoration (it's a break from gardening!) The top case was paint stencilled on the worst of them, thanks Coventry University, but came out beautifully with a few coats...

Re: A7000+ battery

Yeah battery will be fine. As you say positive any of the top two and negative the one on it's own. I use 2xAA holder on leads to keep off the board and easier to replace but the mempacs always look cleaner to me!

The 8583 has a wide tolerance (from 1v to 6v I believe)

Re: A4 laptop - no display

No sound at all. Guessing its something around the VIDC chip rather than the chip itself but TRM not giving much away. Ideally I could do with a circuit level diagram which I haven't found for the A4 yet

I've already slightly damaged the floppy connector with hot air!

A4 laptop - no display

Picked up an A4 laptop cheaply months ago but only just got around to taking a look at it as I had to purchase a PSU for it. Surprisingly it powered up but that was really about it. Ocassionally the keyboard LEDs would illuminate but they stay on unresponsively but the HD would occassionally kick in...

In that case, to both Paul's!

Yeah I kind of regretted not using my hot air station considering I'm more comfortable doing this sort of job with it. I will return to it when I get time and tidy the work up at the very least. Need to replace the PSU fan in it too it's pretty loud

(Yet another) A5000 restoration

I picked up an A5000 setup yesterday which knowingly only booted to Supervisor. The battery had been removed and apparently cleaned but other than that it was a truly unknown quantity. The person who I picked it up from did all the usual methods of trying to clear the CMOS so I guessed that this was...

Yeah they're soldered on. I'll have to get hold of some 40-pin DIL sockets first as I've only got up to 32.

Can anyone recommend a supplier of 6522 VIA's?

Electron key switch

Is this just a simple case of replacing the key switch? Does the replacement just slot in or do I need to solder it and / or remove the pins??

I'm not familiar with Electron keyboards (or in fact Elk's themselves)

Re: Today I received.....

Picked up a boxed Master and Cub monitor today locally. Been after either for a while at none-eBay prices and picked up both with boxes and manuals. Master is a bit yellow and needs recap but still... Even got some sealed 5.25" floppies chucked in Once that is done time to upgrade it. Hope to get so...
