Re: Cheap SD/MMC Readers

It didn't seem worth starting a new thread for this so I thought I'd try tacking it on here - I don't suppose anyone could burn the latest MMFS ROM for me? I have a very basic user port MMC interface that I'm using with my Model B but the ROM is 3 years old now and it seems there's been a lot of act...

Re: New Microvitec CUB Monitor Tripler

I just wanted to add that I've now finally replaced the tripler as well as the LOPT and that scorched capacitor from my previous post. It turned out that the capacitor was the wrong value so I replaced it with the correct one as per the service manual. What a difference! The monitor is now pin sharp...

Re: New Microvitec CUB Monitor Tripler

https://ctrl-alt-rees.com/images/cub-crt-discharge.jpg As it was sunny out and this thing was full of a thick layer of grime I decided to do the de-energising thing and stripdown outside. Completely uneventful - not even a "crack". I was a bit disappointed after all the build up  htt...

Re: New Microvitec CUB Monitor Tripler

Slightly OT but still in the back of a CRT unit that I remember from BITD was the guy that was teaching me about TV repair took a screwdriver and placed it a short distance from the top of a few of the vacuum tubes whilst the TV was on. He was attempting to show me that the High Voltage was "r...

Re: New Microvitec CUB Monitor Tripler

Thanks for the replies everyone. It was indeed me in the other thread. I think I'm getting some of my terminology confused - I'm fairly new to CRTs and was under the impression that the "tripler" was usually integrated into the same unit as the LOPT. It seems they're separate things in my ...

Re: New Microvitec CUB Monitor Tripler

Hello all, Sorry to revive such an old thread but I'm sat here with my CUB in bits in front of me, spare tripler in hand, pondering what to do next. I'm assuming it's the tripler that's at fault, it takes a very long time to warm up and come into focus. Either way I have it now so I might as well ch...

MicroVitec CUB Flyback / LOPT Replacement

https://ctrl-alt-rees.com/images/bbc_micro_with_microvitec_cub_monitor.jpg Hello All, I'm the proud owner of the CUB monitor pictured above. Trouble is, it's very flickery when warming up and takes an age to finally come into focus. I've decided that the flyback is dying and I managed to get hold o...

It's pretty sad how much important software could be lost forever due to silly DRM schemes. Not to mention legitimate users being locked out.

I'll wait for your official release.

Re: Games Freezing

If you had a ram issue, I'd expect to see crashes and locks all over the place. It could be a Module conflict, something that's being loaded during the boot sequence, so it's worth doing a SHIFT-BOOT so the boot sequence is bypassed and then try things that previously locked. This seems logical. I'...

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try to get time to test it a bit further tonight. I've since noticed in the Wolfenstein manual that the Program Disk needs to be in the drive. Hi All, I'm sure you're familiar with my setup by now but if not - A305, running a VGA monitor with LCDGameModes, RISCOS 3.11 ROMs, 4MB RAM upgrade, ARMv3. I'm having strange issues with games, where they'll randomly freeze up (although audio will continue playing). The version of Lemmings from JASP...

I just wanted to post a follow-up to my performance issues with RISC OS on the Pi just in case it helps anyone else. Turns out I was experiencing a common issue. Re: A305 With AKF50 Monitor - Resolution Issues

Ah, yes, an AKF60 would certainly explain the issue! But no harm done and at least you got to the bottom of it, while learning more about your A305. :D Unfortunately the AKF60 isn't great for early Archies, it was sold with the first RiscPCs, and fits better with their graphics capabilities....

Re: What is the average age on here??

Surprised how sophisticated it is really. Agreed, speaking from the point of view of someone who's passionate about restoring and using old computers it's pretty amazing just how far ahead of their time Acorn were. The BBC blows most other 8-bits out of the water and then ARM was light years ahead ...

Re: A305 With AKF50 Monitor - Resolution Issues

There is a warning here that once you cut the leg on IC4 you may lose the non-VGA modes? If the multisync relies on the sync-on-green you will no longer be able to use the 15KHz modes once you do this mod? :?: My understanding was that I'd lose the ability to use an older, composite sync monitor (m...

I'm 34. My first computer was an Acorn Electron, then we had an Atari ST. I grew up using the BBC computers at school, of course. Re: A305 With AKF50 Monitor - Resolution Issues

These aren't the same as CM8833, because these are multiscan and (should) accept any horizontal frequency from 15khz to 38khz. The CM8833 only accepts 15khz. The AKF65 supports the higher horizontal frequencies 25khz and above I believe, but won't work for games at 15khz... It's interesting that on...

Re: A305 With AKF50 Monitor - Resolution Issues

Reading the document Steve has linked to: Generally, multiscan monitors require the horizontal and vertical sync signals to be supplied by the computer separately, which may be achieved using *CONFIGURE SYNC 0 followed by a Ctrl-Break. I'd have to say you need to do the following. 1. Split the comp...
