Re: A7000+ revival, pointers on where to start

I bought a 120mb IDE drive. Plugged it in... the A7000 booted without error and HForm identified it, then "drive not ready" when trying to format it. Subsequent boots... same error. So the pattern is that the first time it sees the drive it boots without error, having done the same with the CF adapt...

Re: A7000+ revival, pointers on where to start

I've spotted something concerning.... On the IDE to CF adapter I was using one of the pins had broken off the CF connector. I have two different styles of CF adapter, one has "active" illuminated all the time and the other shows the same error while does work in an IBM PC. I don't have any working I...

Re: A7000+ revival, pointers on where to start

On the circuit diagrams, watch for resistors marked "NF" for "Not Fitted", R142 on the RISC PC diagram is marked as "NF", So pin 95 and 100 should be unconnected, and 95 should be connected to 0V(GND) via R4. Thanks, I hadn't realised that. Following the same through on the diagram makes sense now....

Re: A7000+ revival, pointers on where to start

If you're confident everything is connected and pulled up/down by the requisite resistors, I'd check for shorts next? d. Sorry I'm new to all this. Do you have any tips when checking for shorts or is it just a case of checking resistance between elements that probably shouldn't be connected? Also, ...

Re: A7000+ revival, pointers on where to start

If you measure between the pin 19's on the HCT245's and pins 23 & 24 on the SMC, do yo see the 47 ohm resistance? If you don't then you probably need to follow the pcb tracks you can see and find the appropriate resistors. Whilst pin1's of the HCT245's are connected together, you also need to check...

Re: A7000+ revival, pointers on where to start

Don't look at the pin numbers on the buffers, they'll be mixed up as they'll be routed differently - you just need to make sure that the IDE connector end is connected to the buffer, and the buffer is connected to the SMC IC. That's why I suggest just gently running your probe along the pins. A bee...

Re: A7000+ revival, pointers on where to start

Thanks both.

I originally found some of the buffered data lines on IC5 (the neighbouring chip) on the CPU, so I guess from what you've said that might be normal.

I'll recheck them all tonight and post my results.

Thanks again!

Re: A7000+ revival, pointers on where to start

The 08 error is drive not ready, so as you did, 27 is where I'd look first. Checking the data lines is most easily done by taking each one at the IDC connector end then running your probe of your multimeter in continuity mode down the inputs to the buffer IC - that way if you get a single beep you ...

Re: A7000+ revival, pointers on where to start

I've spent a lot of late nights on this over the months and would really appreciate any suggestions before I throw in the towel. I've posted here instead of on a new thread as its this post I found and read many times while working on this issue. I have an A7000 and three spare motherboards. All hav...

Re: A3000 - No video

Nice ARM3! :D That's the reason. Arm3 doesn't fix this unfortunately, but the blanking should only happen for floppy discs, not hard discs, and only in high resolution (640x350 and above) 256 colour screen modes on 8mhz machines - that's only MODE 21, 28 and 40. All other modes should be fine. Than...

Re: A3000 - No video

I will add that with an ARM3 fitted you should not see a black screen when accessing the diskette drive when in VGA mode. This means you have RO 2 fitted : it doesn't know you have a CPU with cache, and you need a small app to turn it on. Not the case with RO 3 where by default if you have an ARM3 ...

Re: A3000 - No video

10 euros + shipping and you'll pay upon reception. I think I've got 2 already assembled, about 180 to 200 cm long. 1 where the battery holder is near the Archie 9 pin connector ; 1 where it's near the SCART connector. No jack for the sound : I consider the Archie deserves to be connected to a hi-fi...

It's a strange case we've got here. Sorry I can't help. PS unfortunately I still cant send any private messages. It looks like I have to be a member for a while before I can. An update on the A3010... hopefully arriving in the post Monday with a mouse, so I will be able to test with that if it does...

Re: A3000 - ShellCLI Unplugged

Its back again but I did just do the same as I did when it went wrong last night. I have been playing with trying to get KeyMouse working. I extracted it using sparkplug and ran it using "!KeyMouse.!RunImage". After doing so I got a stream of "Wimp is currently active at line 910" messages. I'm now ...

Re: A3000 - ShellCLI Unplugged

I think you're making a mistake : CTRL-BREAK works ok ; but powering off then on without keeping DELETE pressed brings the issue you described. This is entirely normal. Don't worry. If you've got no battery to power the CMOS chip you'll have weird data each time you power the Archie on without havi...

A3000 - ShellCLI Unplugged

A bit of a worried follow-up to: http://stardot.org.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=13092 I've been using my A3000 tonight and I have a worrying issue. It is very hot here in the UK today so it could be heat related but I suspect not. For interest, the computer still has no cmos battery. I'm still wa...

Re: A3000 - No video

MODE 40 is out of range on my A5000 connected to a recent BENQ monitor, I guess it uses a lot of memory so DMA video refresh is slowed by the disk access when formatting. So : yes : it is normal. Why not try *CONFIGURE MODE 27 instead (16 colour VGA) ? You are good! Yes mode 27 both works and dosen...

A3000 - No video

Sorry in advance, I'm both new to vintage acorns and looking for help. Last time I owned one it was new, came in a nice box and generally involved less "do it yourself". I like others have bought a couple of Acorns recently, models I previously owned or had as a child. The first is an A3000 and I'm ...
