Re: Acorn electron 'stuff' - free

The switches and replacement ribbon from RetroClinic arrived this morning. Soldered them in over lunchtime and now I have a fully working Electron (well, minus the RF modulator, but that doesn't matter). :)

Re: Acorn electron 'stuff' - free

Ok, so good news/bad news on the Electron Front. The caps arrived and I now have good power, however it's not all roses. The screen looks like this: So more troubleshooting required, but it's a start, because it shows me that the video circuit is working, and it's also likely the CPU is good too, a...

Re: Acorn electron 'stuff' - free

In terms of keyboard switches, I think I got a good one, as I just did a continuity test and all of them work fine. The only remaining concern is the ribbon, but it does have end to end continuity, and it doesn't have any shorts between lines, so I'm feeling quite hopeful that once the power proble...

Re: Acorn electron 'stuff' - free

I was thinking perhaps I got the "better" machine here, given the switch problems and general clean up you guys had; mine was super clean, all things considered. However, after my PSU order arrived, it looks like I might have a dead ULA. It's a socketed Issue 4 one, with the little metal ...

Do you know if the Elk boots without a keyboard? The BBC B doesn't, so I'm curious.
It doesn’t. The keyboard needs to be present as with the BBC B.

Re: Acorn electron 'stuff' - free

The top case and keys have come up lovely: Cleaned_Up.jpg Mainboard is very clean, and like the others, has a rather rusty modulator can, but once I get my stuff out of storage (Hopefully we're moving into the new place in 3-4 weeks), I will get that cleaned up and paint it silver to stop the rust ...

Re: Acorn electron 'stuff' - free

I recently had to rebuild the keyboard on my BBC B and had 4 key switches that had no continuity no matter how hard i pressed. I submerged them for a couple of days in contact cleaner then did about 100 presses or so per switch. All are now working and reinstalled, it may be worth trying to get som...

Re: Acorn electron 'stuff' - free

Oh, interesting, I didn't realise the pins just came out like that. That seems like a good plan, then. An evening with the desoldering gun is in order, I think. :) Before that, try repeatedly pressing each dodgy key switch at least fifty (yes 50) times. The contacts tarnish over time and often just...

Re: Acorn electron 'stuff' - free

Some of the keys don't seem to respond, but looking inside I think I see the culprit. The keyboard ribbon looks to be a bit corroded (as does the RF modulator's casing). You may be right, but in my experience Elks can have dodgy keyswitches too. Mine certainly do. There's a thread somewhere describ...

Mine's also arrived now. After giving it a quick check over, I plugged it in (using an old printer PSU I found that happened to be a reasonable voltage) and it jumped straightt into life. :) elk.jpg Some of the keys don't seem to respond, but looking inside I think I see the culprit. Re: USB Concept Keyboard

This thread reminded me that a couple of years ago I was playing with something similar. I had a setup I was fiddling with that used a concept keyboard hooked up to an Arduino (I didn't have fancy boards made up, I just stuck wires down the userport plug and into the Arduino headers!) and managed to...

So here's a game I've been looking for for a long time. I saw it back when a demo of it was on an Acorn Computing coverdisc back in December 1994 but have never managed to find a copy of the full game. It was released by Sherston and CCH look to have a copy in their archive, so it definitiely did ge...

Finally got round to being my turn last weekend. Had the Pfizer on Saturday afternoon. Sunday was pretty much a write-off. Spent pretty much all day in bed feeling pretty bad and with a sore arm. Seemed fine again by Monday, though.

Now to wait a few weeks to do it all again...
