Re: handling binary numbers

thankyou!! that is ideal, ill have to work out what it all means and how to use it, but its easier for me to understand that way..

thankyou again!

handling binary numbers

Has anyone got an example of a program handling 8 bit numbers that i can have a look at. Im a bit of a novice at basic and im using a Pi with Richard Russels BBC basic to control a 8 bit register chip with the gpios. Im not 100% sure what to do or what i can do with bbc basic in this way.

thanks.

Re: pi gpio bbc basic

that is really interesting! i did originally want to do my program with the bbc, but then thought id try to get it sorted with the pi, and bbc basic. That way also, i dont stand a chance of blowing up the bbc! I do love learning about this old technology, [uel=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9z9eDM...

Re: gpio strangeness?

thankyou again for the reply. the globals where for when i goto the 8 bit shift register, i though it would be easier. i am sure that is the problem now as i have instead of using the globals and procpins, ive just put each pin action down and it works. so i am happy with the operations as they are,...

Re: gpio strangeness?

well i havnt found out exactly why, but if i do a proc with in a proc, sometimes i wont work the pins properly. Maybe it forgets a value or something, but i have changed the way i have worked it. maybe it forgets where it goes back to at the end proc i cant work it out. i can now open and close my w...

gpio strangeness?

im having a strange problem with the gpio and the bbc basic. the program controls 2 windows and 2 fans via gpio, and also an 8 relay module. So first thing i noticed in my program is that i have set a variable G to be my power on, and im using another 6 A-F for window/fan operations. Now, i set A-G ...

Re: pi gpio bbc basic

yes, thankyou for helping again, ive just realised the stepper motor takes a value some how to make the motor turn, and a servo motor which i thought i had uses pwm. So if i can just figure out how to control this motor now, and also make use of some form of limit switch, itll be really good. I was ...

Re: pi gpio bbc basic

I know you are asking principally about RISC OS, but for completeness the Raspberry Pi edition of BBC BASIC for SDL 2.0 (which runs under Raspbian, on a RPi 3 or 4) supports controlling the GPIO via the supplied library ' gpiolib.bbc '. Here is a demonstration of it in action, with the program list...

Re: info: is there a 8 bit pwm generator chip?

i have the pi, Richard Russels amazing basic, and some blinds i cba operating. I am not sure what to do, i have one wired to a small geared motor, but it needs limit switches and a H bridge, all can be done but with a stepper motor it can go both ways easier [i think!] Not sure what to do tbh...

info: is there a 8 bit pwm generator chip?

i want to control a servo motor to operate some veneration blinds, ive seen a motor, and i think it needs 0-50 hertz for 0 to full angle of its operation. I want to program the motor using BBC basic, and also my raspberry pi. Im looking for a way to do; say an 8 bit shift register chip like the SN74...

Re: pi gpio bbc basic

interesting, i dont really understand what is said above, but i have found out about 8 bit Shift Registers SN74HC595N, this will need 3 wires to it, and i think will be easy to control with the pi. As far as i see it now, i link 3 wire s from the pi to a sn chip, then 8 outputs to 8 transistors to g...

Re: pi gpio bbc basic

right ok i can see that being a massive project, thanks for the reply again! i have just had a little snooze and when i woke up i was thinking, most of the signals i need for my window are to work a 16 relay module board. So, maybe i could do some form of logic set up with like 4 pins, giving me an ...

Re: pi gpio bbc basic

I was looking at the amount of gpio the pi has , and was wondering if it can be expanded ? I saw a board, the IO Pi , can this be used with bbc basic? Or is there a way of expanding the gpio amount another way?

thanks!

Re: pi gpio bbc basic

right ive read that maybe 20 times since you posted it, and thankyou! i now understand a lot more. the bit that really got me was about the 2^pin%, and then it clicked, 2^ converts decimal pin number into binary. So for my program i can set the pins up like you did, and i can then use 2^10 if i want...

Re: pi gpio bbc basic

thanks for the reply, on your example, im struggling a bit. you install the gpio lib file gpio%= fn_gpio_setup - is that returning some true or false condition ? you set the pins with the data line set to input set to output, why do you do this? i cant work that out either then you set the pins and ...

oh right that looks interesting too! the bbc basic one reads info from the bbc news website, and sniffs for the good bits. ceefax simulator

im genuinely amazed how good this is, i just cant believe this works so well. But the question is, i can read the code and understand how it gets the data , and i can understand it put the data into hi memory. but where in the program does it get the data? what put the info into the memory?

thanks

i am now on the way to where i want to be going, i have installed risc os on the pi, worked out that by pressing f12 i can get to *basic and its really good.

i have found a basic overview and will be starting again from teh beginning.

thankyou for the reply. The amx thing looks good, there is one not far away from me for not a lot, but i do really want to use the pi now. I only know how to program BBC basic from when i was a kid, and would be my language of choice as itll take me a long time to learn any ot...
