Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

I had a close look and noticed that there was some gunk between two of the pins of IC20. I put some isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud and wet in-between the pins. I then used a needle to scrape away the gunk, wiped again with more alcohol and let it dry. My RiscPC now seems to remember the CMOS sett...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

Daniel : I don't know how to do that, I'm afraid. And I have no idea where I could get a replacement IC20 chip from. To be honest, soldering that resistor into place took me a lot of time. I don't know if I have the required skill to solder a replacement chip in place. John : I'm not sure how this ...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

Hi Daniel. Thanks for your reply. It's 1.35V when the machine is off. I checked the voltage between the pins where I initially checked the resistance for 180 ohms. Incidentally I checked the resistance again and although the resistance between the negative terminal and the IC20 chip measures around ...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

The AAA battery holder I ordered from China still hasn't arrived. So in the mean time I have been leaving the RiscPC on for a few hours a day as Mark suggested. I installed something using PackMan and after the next reboot the RiscPC refused to remember the time, CD-ROM drives, ethernet settings, et...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

Zarchos : Both the VRAM and RAM are refurbs so they were already shiny. The contacts also looked good when I replaced the old chips with the new ones. I'm not sure why the battery voltage would be a problem if the original RiscPC battery was 1.2V. Having said that, the original battery leaked all o...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

Daniel : I'm using a battery I bought from APDL around 4 years ago. It has nice long wires and the battery itself is in a sealed rubber sleeve with a piece of double sided tape. It lives at the front of the RiscPC, far away from the motherboard. I'm not sure how I would fully charge it other than t...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

So ... maybe I spoke a bit too soon. Actually everything seems to be fine - I can set the time and date, set the number of CD ROM drives, the resolution, etc. and RISC OS remembers this when I power off the computer, even if I unplug the mains lead. However, if I leave the RiscPC switched off...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

All done and so far so good! The RiscPC remembers the time and CMOS settings. :D :D :D

I just wanted to thank you guys so much. It's always a bit nerve wracking when you are doing things blind, so I'm very grateful for all the handholding.

Thanks again!

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

A fibreglass pen from the UK finally arrived and some 180 ohms resistors from France (the pièce de résistance ) My multimeter died so I had to buy a new one. It's digital and doesn't seem to be as accurate, but it works (which is the important thing) I spent some time gently rubbing away the y...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

So this is what we believe is happening, right? BatteryCircuit.png Daniel - I have ordered some 180ohm 1/4W through hole resistors. Would they suffice? Also why would you remove R130 if it and it's tracks aren't working? I'm not even sure how I would remove it and am worried about damaging the board...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

I am unable to measure the resistance of the R130 resistor (doesn't show anything on the multimeter), nor does there appear to be any connection from the positive terminal to R130, or from R130 to D2. However, the south side of the resistor inbetween R212 and R130 (R133) appears to be connected to D...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

Thanks guys! You are awesome! :D

The verticle (- to the CMOS chip) reading was fine - 180 Ohms, so I guess that R212 is okay. The horizontal one (+ to D2), however, didn't show a reading at all. How should I proceed?

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

Hi Paul, Thank you very much for your reply. I ran the SaveCMOS utility in RISC OS 6 which appeared to make the network warning go away, and the network settings are being retained. However the screen resolution is not saved, nor are the number of CDROMDrives and, without NTP enabled, the clock seem...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

Okay so I soldered the CMOS battery to the pins and checked the voltage on the pins underneath the board. Then I put the machine back together and, to my relief, it booted. :D However I have the same issue as I did before - whenever I power on the machine I get a brief message " Warning: CMOS RAM fo...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

Hi guys, Many thanks for all your advice. I think the thing that everyone seems to agree on is that the acid in the vinegar neutralises the (presumably alkaline) gunk from the battery and, after 10 minutes or so, this needs to be washed off with water or/and isopropyl alcohol. I used the vinegar, ri...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

Hi guys, I finally got my Risc PC to Romania and started the cleaning process. It has been more than a little unsettling dabbing white vinegar on a board and then washing it off with an alcohol / distilled water mixture. I've got a few questions that and would really appreciate it if someone...

Re: Building RPCEmu on Mac OS X

Apologies for the delay. I haven't been in front of my main machine for a few days. So far I've run all of the Allegro 5 demos alphabetically up to ex_gldepth and only ex_haptic and ex_haptic2 fail with al_install_haptic failed and Could not init haptics (respectively). All the other demos run fine....

Re: Building RPCEmu on Mac OS X

Unfortunately, programming a proper, native UI in Objective X/Cocoa is far beyond my abilities. Personally I think using Cocoa for emulators like RPCEmu is a waste of time and sort of defeats the point of the code being portable. I think Allegro 5 menus would be great. :) Are you looking at impleme...

Re: Building RPCEmu on Mac OS X

Hi VincentVega, That's amazing! Thank you so much! :D :D :D Just one thing I - you need to build autoconf before automake or it won't ./configure. Apart from that your instructions are spot on. It didn't resolve the graphical issue I have but it was worth trying just for the experience. I can run it...

Re: CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

Many thanks, Guys. I'm leaving the country in a couple of days and don't have white vinegar, distilled water or my multimeter here. So I'll wait until my RiscPC arrives in Romania and give it a go. :)

I'm quite excited now and have ordered 128MB RAM. :) :)

CMOS Battery Replacement Questions

Hi there, Apologies in advance for the noob question. A few years ago I bought a RiscPC from eBay. The seller told me the battery needed changing, hence the CMOS settings weren't saved. I immediately removed the old CMOS battery and bought a replacement with nice long wires to avoid any future poten...

Re: How to compile Arculator for Windows

Interesting! Can you reproduce that on ArcEm too? It may not be relevant but I noticed that both Arculator and RPCEmu on Windows try to write to their data to their respective Program Files folders, which causes the creation of a lovely VirtualStore folder in your Windows profile. When I had strange...

Hi flibble, Thanks for your reply. I checked out the latest source like this: hg clone http://www.home.marutan.net/hg/rpcemu rpcemu (as per the instructions here .) I then built RPCEmu and copied the RPCEmu-Interpreter.exe and RPCEmu-Recompiler.exe executables into the existing RPCEmu v0.8.15 folder...

RPCEmu (Windows) - Graphical Problems on Some GPUs with RISC OS 4 and 6

Hi there, Not sure if anyone else has experienced this before but it happens in work with my Windows PC which has an Intel 4000 graphics card in it, and also on my home PC that has an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 card. However it is not reproducible on my laptop with a bog standard Intel HD chip. Basicall...

Re: How to compile Arculator for Windows

Hi Tim, Sorry for the long delay in my reply, I've been very busy with work and trying to sort out things around the flat.
