Re: Matrix Brandy BASIC V for Linux with SDL: V1.21.20 released

I just compiled the latest version of brandy and unlike previous versions (and unlike the original brandy) it immediately closes after the program ends if you run it with a program file as a command line argument. Previously it only did that if you specified -quit. Is this intentional? If it is inte...

If this is true, those people are just being silly and you shouldn't be concerned about what they think.

I don't have anything important to say, but I just wanted to say again, big thanks for all your work on Matrix Brandy. I use it a lot and I'm really glad that it's being maintained.

Re: Matrix Brandy BASIC V for Linux with SDL: V1.21.18 released

It's not closely related to the current discussion, but I'm wondering, is there any chance that matrix brandy would be ported to SDL2 at some point in the future? I'm thinking that problems like this would be less likely to happen with SDL2. Using SDL2 might also make it easier to implement features...

Re: Matrix Brandy BASIC V for Linux with SDL: V1.21.18 released

I think Richard is right. From my perspective as an end user of brandy, the behaviour of BGET#, EOF#, etc, might as well be considered a part of (brandy) BASIC.

Re: Matrix Brandy BASIC V for Linux with SDL: V1.21.18 released

Thanks. EOF#0 now causes an error as it should. But I've also just noticed now that BPUT#0 and BGET#0 have the same problem - BPUT#0 doesn't cause an error and BGET#0 returns 0 without causing an error. (I should have tested those before I posted about the EOF#0 problem, sorry about that)

Re: Matrix Brandy BASIC V for Linux with SDL: V1.21.18 released

Hello,

I've just discovered a bug with EOF#. EOF#0 returns 0, instead of causing an "invalid channel" error as it does in other versions of BBC BASIC.

Re: How do you edit your BASIC programs?

I'm a bit late to this thread, but, I usually write my programs using my favourite text editor "Mousepad", save as text, and load into Brandy either by passing the program text file as a command line argument or with CHAIN. When I want to write a program for the BBC Micro or RISC OS, I often start w...

Re: Sound Export

Maybe it's not related, but I recently wrote a resampler for Matrix Brandy BASIC. It would probably not be much work to extend it into something that could be used to make music.

Try an extra leading slash. (*/ is the same as *RUN I think.)
Thanks, that worked. I've also just worked out that "$PWD/binfile" works for executing something that's in the current working directory.

Re: Matrix Brandy BASIC V for Linux with SDL: V1.21.17 released

Hello again, I've noticed two issues (or maybe three issues, with two of them similar but separate) related to OSCLI. I found myself in the situation where I wanted to use OSCLI to run an executable in the current directory. So I tried OSCLI "./binfile" But this didn't work because any command strin...

Re: I sold my BBC Micro now looking at BBC Master

Hi Pablos, Do you, or have you done, any programming on modern computers/laptops/etc? I'm just wondering because from reading your post, I get the impression that you've felt a bit daunted by the experience of trying to create stuff on the BBC Micro, trying to fit everything in the small memory and ...

Re: Matrix Brandy BASIC V for Linux with SDL: V1.21.17 released

Just a small aside, I've pressed a text-mode build into service running a program to process DHCP logs into a MySQL database at work. My first log-mangler (to reshape the data into INSERT statements) was a bash script, and processed about 30% of the 400MB log file overnight, after which point I gav...

Re: Matrix Brandy BASIC V for Linux with SDL: V1.21.17 released

That is something I would like to do - but it's so far away from anything I've done before (I've never done sound programming previously) I will be struggling to make it work. I was thinking even leaning towards the BBC Micro style, as it might be simpler than having to implement sample files (like...

Re: Matrix Brandy BASIC V for Linux with SDL: V1.21.17 released

With debian or ubuntu, I think all you would need to do to be able to compile matrix brandy is "sudo apt-get install build-essential libsdl1.2-dev". (I might be forgetting other dependencies) Puppy Linux seems to be a bit strange, compared to other linux distros. I would never have expected that ins...

Re: Matrix Brandy BASIC V for Linux with SDL: V1.21.16 released

Hello, This is the demo for Matrix Brandy I had posted a while ago but deleted. I thought I would post it now. It's the beginnings of a 2D platformer type game. You can run and jump with Z, X, and Space. It's not much of a game at the moment because there isn't any kind of goal to work towards or an...

Re: Matrix Brandy BASIC V for Linux with SDL: V1.21.16 released

Hello, I just discovered a difference between Brandy and RISC OS/ARM BASIC, which happens when you try to do a shift left by a negative number. Tested with this program: PRINT 1 << -1 PRINT 1 >> -1 PRINT 1 >>> -1 Which gives these results: RISC OS 2018-11-17-172643_650x541_scrot.png Brandy 2018-11-1...

Sorry about that. It was a very early (and a bit broken) version of something I've continued working on. It progressed a lot from the version I posted and I thought rather than keep updating the post, I'd delete it and post it again later once it's a bit more finished.

Re: BBC BASIC desktop shortcut (Linux)

When did Windows introduce it? I'm pretty sure typing 'deltree *.*' would have been pretty catastrophic on the earlier versions. I'm not a windows expert, but I think it would have been introduced with Windows NT. But I have the impression that a lot of people used Windows 2000 and XP (which are NT...
