Re: Oh for the space!

Where does all the space go? I know precisely what you mean. My house is a similar footprint to yours overall. Yet all I have out permanently is a Master. I’d love a pool table but the configuration means there just isn’t the space spare. Whereas my neighbour (smaller footprint but different config...

Re: BBC Micro Power Supply advanced repair

When I had something similar, it was Q4 that was funky. IIRC its job is to produce a stable output, the value of which depends on the resistance of one of its other connections. I think I’ve already posted somewhere about what component this is - despite appearances it’s not a transistor and is itse...

That’s interesting to know, thank you. Particularly since their troubleshooting section states they ran out of membranes and UK keyboards some time back - if you’ve recently bought one this may be incorrect.

I’ll dig deeper...

Re: Help with Z88

New membrane time :) Indeed. Unfortunately, I can’t find anyone with one in stock. Hence the very optimistic plea for an alternative solution. Still can’t work out how both shift keys can work fine when pressed with another key, yet fail to work when pressed with each other. I’m guessing it must be...

Help with Z88

I have a Z88 with a bizarre problem... When first powered up, it won't respond to Shift-Shift. With a Hard Reset it boots. However, it still won't respond to Shift-Shift to go to sleep. Both Shift keys are working fine. The rest of the machine seems to be working okay as well. It's just the Shift-Sh...

Less keen on the more modern Technic - too many parts unique to any particular model (although I do have a Mack truck awaiting building).
For me, it’s all about the older kits and what they managed to achieve with pretty much generic bricks, especially the various generations of car chassis.

Re: Adding more than one "FDD" to an Acorn 440

I’ve just checked in my dual-floppy A310. The drive cable doesn’t have a twist. Drive ID is conferred via a (very) discreet switch on the side of the drive, which you can’t see/access if the drive’s in the cradle (Drive 1 is on the left in the photo). Try:

http://www.apdl.org.uk/riscworld/volume ... /index.htm

Dual-drive A300s were sold as standard, so the hardware’s certainly capable.
Watford and Beebug did buffer boards for extra drives, but AFAIK this was something required for adding 5.25” drives rather than 3.5”.

The Morley adapter used ATS as well. Presumably tweaked to work on the user port.
I may still have my Morley rom knocking about somewhere but I’ve not thought about it for at least quarter of a century, so may not!

ISTR there’s a sideways ram image of it on the Morley floppy.

Re: Looking for recommendations for a low('ish) cost gaming PC

The graphics card situation is horrific atm. There’s been a perfect storm of lockdown making everyone want to play games, supply issues (rumours re chip yields) on new cards, and bitcoin miners nabbing all the cards. Usually there’s a healthy second-hand market but this has dried up because, with no...

I think the stylus was just a lump of plastic. Since the reviews at the time complained about the inordinate amount if pressure required, it would suggest so.

Sure.

I've had them made. I reproduced all the artwork.

I've got a limited amount of these. If I can get £5.50 inc. post per set, I'd make back some of the outlay. Being dye-cut they cost quite a bit.
Please put me down for a set. £5.50 sounds very reasonable.

Interesting... were they powered by the small floppy power connector or the same molex as the hard drive do you know? Just that there's two connectors on the floppy power lead and only one big 'un. And there's two FDC sockets as well, so there must have been an intention to supply a second floppy a...

A310 - what caused this damage?

Some years ago, one of the tantalum caps blew on an A310, so I replaced the entire motherboard with a spare. I’m finally getting round to replacing the capacitor and noticed (quite surprising) damage to one of the nearby traces (see photos). Would I be correct in assuming this was caused by having a...

A310 - what is this mod?

Following on from another thread about early A310s, I’ve dug mine out and found there are at least 3 issues of the 310 board. My S/N 344 board is Issue 1+ (presumably there must have been Issue 1). I also have Issues 2 and 2+. The Issue 2+ has a very interesting mod, involving a piggy-backed IC (dif...

Thanks for sharing those. Definitely very different from the standard A310 keyboard and one I have not seen before. Perhaps an older model? I think it’s one of the early models. Re: Acorn AKA31 SCSI podule / A310 incompatibilty?

Not all A300 backplanes were equal. BITD I started off with a Watford 4-slot one which worked fine with the Acorn ST506 card but couldn’t cope with a Morley cached SCSI card. I ended up having to change to an IFEL 4-slot. Which worked fine with an Acorn SCSI card for many years. You’d have thought a...

It’s a very rare A400 - the rear only has composite video out, not high-res mono. That’s why it’s worth £700, especially if it’s that ultra-rare variant that also didn’t have on-board ST506 controller.

Oh, wait...
